Fair Bloody Dinkum mate, that was the best explained video I have seen on explaining the process of Damascus forge welding. I am a 65 year old carpenter an I'm very interested in other trades and learning as much as possible. Thank-you, you're a bright young bloke.
I just want to say, people like you are what make TH-cam so valuable! It's the spreading of knowledge and tradecraft that is so invaluable! Thank u for your more than valuable knowledge !
@@RichardsonForge This is not true damascus and you should know it, true damascus blades were made out of Wootz steel. youre just combining two different steels lmao
As a welder looking into forging for personal hobby and fun I am an odd ball for being able to run before I can walk aside from metal and your explaining and visual representation of how to make Damascus steel was enjoyable for sure thank you sir
Saw you on Alone. Was binge watching Forged in Fire on Hulu and saw you on there just a few days ago. Was talking to my husband about Damascus and what it takes to get that pattern and searched for a video. And here you are! Great job explaining the process, I learned some of the questions I've always wondered about while watching Forged.
Thank you for explaining the process. I watch films that look interesting but I went looking for this one to help me understand what was going on. Thank you.
Very nice and very thorough sir! Someday i hope to do what ur doing. Thank you for explaining ur methods and techniques very clearly. Ur a very generous person. I salute you!
Try soaking your billet in diesel fuel or WD-40 after weld up and before your first heat. Flux makes a mess in your forge and if you clean your steel to start you can use alot less. I like to completely seal weld my billet after degreasing and cleaning my steel. I use a TIG rig and fuse/seal weld the billet and eliminate flux all together but not everyone can TIG weld or has one.
This is a really good explain video that will help a lot of People over te World, thanks for taking the time make this awesome record. Perhaps i do have a question ¿what is that for poutting up or add some black pepper and dry red chile 🌶 in to it? It doesent make sence for me... thanks for your unswer
Hey Brad, what kind of exhaust do you need to operate a forge like that? Also, is the cost of fuel a major factor for completing one project? Excellent information 👍🇨🇦🍻
Thanks for watching Andrew! A propane forge doesn't need much more than an open window or garage door. It would need to run for a while before C02 would become an issue, but I always prefer leaving a shop door open with a small fan for airflow. Cost of fuel is not that bad if you work on a few small projects at a time as getting the forge up to heat initially can take some time depending on the forge.
Great job I did some cable Damascus steel I would like to be able to post my videos on my TH-cam channel but I got horrible troll haters shiting on anything I post so I decided not to post anything anymore 🥺
I received a Damascus knife as a present so wanted to find out about the technique and came across this video. Haha I have to say this - you're SO cute!!
I have watch a tone of viedos to learn this I want to try this video is the best I have seen how thick should the steel be to start the billit? Using a hand hammer
Hey Brad I’m really enjoying your videos! I’m just getting back into forging. I had a coke forge but want to get a propane forge for the consistency and even heat. I noticed you have a 3 burner forge. Is a 2 burner one versatile enough for blade smithing or should I spend the extra $ and go for the 3 burner? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I Dont know a great deal about Damascus making, but Im just curious....Ive seen people making "Damascus" blades from all sorts of things (e.g. ball bearings, wrenches etc.) Just curious what a good stainless steel cutlery set would be like to use?
Where would you recommend acquiring a tool like the flatter and other essential items for forging this is all new to me and would like to make it a hobby of mine
My press was purchased from Riverside Machine, it is a 24 ton hydraulic press. It's a nice press, originally tried to buy one from Coal Ironworks but they never responded to my emails.
Okay i have a question what are the jaws of a hydrolic press made of because I’ve seen them crush cold steel so if they are made of steel shouldn’t it crush the jaws too because of one of the laws of that one dude
Matthew Brown The dies are made from hardened steel. I try to only work hot steel with them but if I crush cold steel I can dent up the dies pretty bad.
I honestly like your videos. I have a question regarding your contact wheel on the grinder. It looks like a large caster. If so how did you get it balanced? Great job on the billit I still do all mine by hand and it takes forever and I loose a lot more to scale that I'd like.. Martin
Thank you for watching! I got the caster at my local Menards. I used a piece of conduit that I slipped over a 5/8in bolt as an axle. I have washers welded to either side of the conduit to keep the wheel in place. It’s far from perfect but it works!
@@crashtke seems like an easy answer without any argumentation or substance. Can you explain why? because from some of the research I did, folding the steel takes out many impurities, therefore resulting in stronger material. What's your perspective here?
That was on older steel when they mixed crap steel with very high quality steel. The folding would indeed get rid of impurities and homogenized the two through the folding. Carbon mitigation would go from the higher carbon good steel to the low carbon crap steel. When you start out with 2 good steels as he did, assuming your forge welds are good folding over and over can actualy decarburize the steel and lose carbon. Time for more research in modern making of damascus for you sir 👍
@@crashtke Well my research stated that 11-15 times folded would be stronger still. You can start out with steel that contains higher carbon %, allowing more folds. Right?!
Finally, someone who explains what he's doing and not just showing a rapid-motion video with no explanation. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Yeah I also agree

how do you get the rebar to Hold onto the billit?
Through the eye of the Traveler TV and video gaming I used a flux cored MIG welder. This is just easier than using tongs sometimes.

I don't see why not. As long as it's a machined part and not casted. Weight might be a problem in some cases.
