My linkshell leader just taught me about gearswapping. I'm still not good at it yet. But I just find it funny that you bring this up at the same time that he taught me.
Perfect timing for me, I just started playing and hit 55 and started building my swap sets for Rdm. I did everything with /equipset 1-5 etc but this system looks a lot better and will take up less macro space in-game; appreciate the guide good sir.
In init you should have the macrobook change lines: /macro book 6 /macro set 5 Edit the numbers for the macro book and page you use on the job your currently on. one less thing to think about when swapping jobs.
I cannot stress this enough. Set. Your. Lock. Style. Your life literally depends on it, your mages need to be able to target you in an unobstructed way. If you dont set your lockstyle, you are putting your entire alliance/party in danger.
In the early days we used FFXI windower with txt files for gear swap and tied them to the skills. Im wondering if your mages are having a hard time targeting you with this strategy. Mages had to write their scripts in a way that they could target without target with all the gear swap blinking. RNG, DRG, NIN, DRK BLM
Lockstyle (basically the glamour system in 14) prevents blinking and that's no longer an issue. For this video I wasn't using lockstyle some of the time, but always do in group play.
Question about horizon rules… Is it possible & legal to set up a condition “if shadows = 0 equipset pdt” I know they are against automation but I don’t see much difference between this and swapping back to your idle set after a mob dies. Neither requires a button push
No, the simple rule is "if this will trigger while Im afk, it's bad" Triggering an idle set is specifically allowed even though it fits the description.
Loved playing here for almost an entire 6 months with zero previous FF11 experience. I so badly wish this game/server was friendlier to new players. It seems tailor-made for vets pushing end game content or the "casual" masses of people perpetually working towards hitting 75 (who will never get there). Amazing game, just the wrong time in history to enjoy it I guess.
Legit question; Is gearswapping mandatory? I don't mean "optimal", I mean "Literally, 100% mandatory to even be able to function and complete content". Cause... I'll be honest, the idea of having to constantly swap gear is.... not appealing. I'd much prefer the idea of putting on a set of gear, and being able to *stay* in that gear set.
Personally I think the short answer is that it depends on what you want to do. If it's more casual content like leveling and AF quests and the like the. Probably not. But if you're looking to do end game you will very likely need to swap gear in order to have the kind of output that is required for stuff like Kings and Kirin and Sea Jailers. This is even more true if you are a mage
You can definitely function adequately with just macros and equip sets but FFXI is a game based around aquiring gear and using it to the best of your ability. Gear swapping is a huge part of that.
You need to swap gear. You lockstyle though so it looks like your always in the same gear so you don't constantly blink into new gear which yeah is annoying and breaks immersion, so at least lockstyle fixes that. You don't really need to do it until end game though and you can get by on the in game macros for the most part. The end game is horizontal and built on collecting the most amount of gear possible, when you get a piece of gear it isn't obselete in 6 months like other mmos. The leveling and story is a big part of the game and you dont really need gear swapping for that. The story has cool missions that are challenging and feels like a proper rpg and not an extended tutorial or walking sim story game like a lot of mmos leveling process
yes it is mandatory, but the addon "gearswap" is not. but you do need to make equipsets via ingame menu. the gearswap addon is just basically equipsets but with AI and endless possibilities on steroids

Glad to help!
Great stuff here. Thanks Kwech. -Riverwind
I'm using luashitacast but still very informative , great job explaining the basics!
Thank you for this!! Always been a console gamer so have struggled to elevate my play style. We didnt have these fancy swaps on the ps2/360 days!
For sure haha, I started on PS2 and definitely enjoyed the QoL when coming back to the game!

I do have that in my usual XMLs, just forgot to include it here, thanks for the heads up.
Great vid! Lots of helpful info for sure
I’ve only watched the intro. Are you planning on doing Luashitacast next?
At the moment no. The concepts in this video were what I wanted to convey. Outside of specific syntax it would be the same video.

Seconded
Get em Sono xD

What addon are you using to have the graphics look soo good? :)
Combination of a number of things, and I'll be doing a video on what exactly pretty soon.
That said, AshenbubsHD is doing alot of the heavy lifting

Sad to hear that was your experience =/
