@@aaron.freeman Thank you! Also I just wanted to let you know that you got the initial impression right - the man is his shadow and the MV is inspired by 'Black Swan' the film. Taemin's lyrics are pretty much always sensual with some songs like Strings, Thirsty and Ace being straight up about sex without any filter, but his music videos tend to differ and be much more artistic... I think that's more of a 2nd gen Kpop feature ^^

For me, the lyrics are about connecting with another person without speaking, just feeling the moment. I think it's just the effect Taemin causes every time he dances, making you feel immersed in what he's doing.

here are some of taemin's b-sides that i feel like you're gonna love based on your taste (i've already send this comment but i've added two songs...):
'strangers' (2020) 🎭
has mysterious and haunting atmosphere. the instrumental fits his voice so damn well. don't get fooled for her calm rhythm in the beginning. the versus are so luring, and then the chorus is OOF. oh, the way it kicks in. it's dark, but so addictive. everything in this song is just freaking perfect, personally it's not my favorite b-side of his, but if i'd need to name a one perfect b-side from his discography, i'd pick stranger. perfect in a good way, not in a boring way.
'impressionable' (2020) 🕸
is another dark bop. she gives off haunted circus vibes with spooky mid tempo r&b and bassy sound. the atmosphere is very intimidating. the lyrics are pretty interesting, to say the least. he's talk rapping here. the bridge is probably one of his best bridges, very beautiful melody and he goes all the way off with the vocals. i'd say this song sounds like a classic taemin's song, in a good way.
'strings' (2021) 🎻
is just such a pleasure to listen to. taemin himself is very proud of this song. it's kinda similar to baekhyun's bambi. slow, smoky, very sensual, that's what strings is. vocally it's probably one of his top 3 songs. spare instrumentation (but omg how impactful that guitar, bass and percussion are) makes his vocals stand out so much. he sounds really sumptuous against that deep distorted bass. the lyrics are pretty interesting too lmfao.
pansy (2020) 🌸
a beautiful and gentle ballad with acoustic guitar in the instrumental, written by taemin. he wrote this one for fans, it has a nostalgic and melancholic feeling to it, you don't even need to know the translation, you can feel it in the instrumental and his voice (for example, in think of you, another emo song that he wrote for fans, you need to know the lyrics because the instrumental is very upbeat and happy). he sounds very soft but at the same time the emotions you hear in his singing are strong.
'identity' (2020) 🧩
taemin has quite a few powerful and personal songs in his discography, but 'identity' is one of the most meaningful and powerful songs by him. another song with this much power is probably 'monologue', but it has some really sad lyrics, depressive even, and his voice sounds painful in that song, so i'm not gonna recommend it
identity simultaneously sounds majestic and mournful and has some great vocals. very beautiful, very powerful. for some even overwhelming, especially in combination with that repetitive lyric 'base to ace' in the chorus (just fyi 'base' is the name of jonghyun's debut album, 'ace' is taemin's debut album)
the instrumental is chef's kiss: serene, but climactic, with the piano, bass drum and the orchestra in the background. the song is basically expresses complex feelings after facing a new artistic identity, certainly feels like the grand ending of a magnificent journey and the beginning of something new. if you liked heaven, i'm 90% sure that you will like this one as well
'sad kids' (2021) 🌆
will give you the same melancholic feeling that 2 kids did, but this one is more powerful. it builds up until the very last chorus, the harmonies and instruments are being added with each verse and chorus, the last part sounds almost cathartic, like identity. but in the end it leaves you with the slightly-hopeful feeling. like finding comfort in the fact that you and the other person are both sad. this song is also the last song of the album, just like identity
soldier (2016) 🎹
for me personally this is not my favorite song, but i know that objectively it's one of his best songs. like i know this, everyone knows this. it's just a fact. it's one of taemin's favorite songs (probably the most favorite? not sure). i feel like every taemin's fan or even casual listener needs to know this song
one of the most powerful, emotional and saddest songs in his discography. it has piano in the instrumental, strong vocals. the lyrics are also written by him. idk how to describe it, but soldier is made for taemin, like this song really exists just for him lol, it's destined to be his own.
some honorable mentions: think of you, clockwork, rise, love, be your enemy (feat. wendy from red velvet), back to you, exclusive, shadow
I'm not gonna lie, but "Identity" is my favorite Taemin song and one of my favorite songs in all of kpop. Soldier is also great.

I think this song can hit people in many different ways. Personally, I have watched it countless times and I cry rivers every single time. This song spoke to me about my constant battle with Depression. The black Shadow represents my Depression. Sometimes I can completely cover it so no one sees it, other times it is in full view... Unhidable. At times Taemin seems to be fighting it as it takes control of him and literally twists, moves, and controls him. Sometimes Taemin is able to escape it's control and he runs and dances freely, beautifully. But sadly like his own Shadow he can never be free of it completely. It always, at some point returns to take hold of him again in this endless battle. 💔😭
Of course once I read the lyrics I was given a completely different feeling about the song. This only reinforces the power of Taemin's story telling with the power of his dancing alone.
Taemin's breathtaking artistry, his dance and voice, speaks directly to my heart and soul on a level that no other artist has ever done. I am 61 years old and no one has ever touched me so deeply. I am so grateful that fate gifted him to this world while I am still alive, able to be transported into the magical worlds he creates. I can not wait for him to return from the Military. I truly feel like Alice and I have definitely fallen deeply into this world of Taemin. 🥰🤗💞

Not so important or interesting info, but Taemin himself calls his fans jjakkoongs (짝꿍).
On his vlive for Advice comeback he said that jjakkoongs is for friends who are always by your side, but to whom you say 'i love you' and 'i miss you', as it's more affectionate than friends. So it's not like a family he said, he said that actually we are his 'lovers' 🤷🏻♀️ he's crazy I know

Here’s the thing, if you’re really into Taemin’s voice and you love his natural tone there’s really no song you could dislike. His singing is so emotionally engaging and always has a well thought out phrasing and structure - as a listener you know perfectly where he’s going with the melodies and where are the culminations, also his adlibs and how he harmonizes with himself are always on point. That’s why I adore his vocals and consider him my favorite vocalist and artist in general.
Welcome to Taemints Aaron, although you should probably consider yourself a Jjakgoong (짝꿍) since Taemints is used by Shawols who bias Taemin within the group and Jjakgoongs (best friends/partners) is the name given by Taemin to all of his fans and he lovingly uses it all the time to address us. He also named his beloved cat Kkoong, which he explained comes from Jjakgoongs :)

Sure there’s always gonna be some exceptions, but he’s generally drawn to Taemin’s voice so yeah, I think he’ll like most of his songs. With me I love Taemin’s voice and there’s literally maybe a song or two out of 100 that I would skip in his whole discography :)

me too, i don't listen maybe like 4 or 5 songs, his voice is my favorite among male idols, probably one of the most favorite voices in general. it's really so unique and like you said engaging, and he's an incredible vocalist. in my list that i left in the comments i just picked songs i feel like he would love the most but ofc i might be completely wrong, that's just some wild guesses. but i do think that he would love so much more songs, i should have added that those are definitely not the only songs that he would like lol, just some examples

I adore Clockwork, such a unique and poetic song, plus those vocalizations at the end are so beautiful (remind me a lot of Sad Kids, which I also love). But also Stone Heart (I don’t remember if you recommended this one) I think would suit Aaron’s taste. He likes dark, sensual songs I think… I’m sure he’ll dive more and more into Taemin’s discography, I’m really hoping for album reactions, this will be such a delight :)

This was a VCR for Taemin's Beyond live concert, but they published it freely for everyone on Taemin's birthday, as a gift to his fans since he was already enlisted on July, 18th. When I saw it for the first time during the live concert I couldn't hold back my tears, because this choreography is so powerful and emotionally overwhelming. And also I loved the fact he turned a simple love song into a deeper perspective, talking about the constant internal fight between himself and his "shadow". They should stop calling Taemin an idol, because he's a real artist.
