When genes are present close enough on a chromosome such that they are not easily separated during the process of meiosis, they are called linked genes and the process is called linkage. However, linked genes may separate during meiosis by a process known as crossing over.
During the process of crossing over genes get rearranged and a new combination will be produced in the gametes. The genes which are placed far apart on a chromosome will have more chance of getting segregated during the process of crossing over when compared to those which are placed closely.
