I love the symbolism of McNulty crashing his car drunk, then driving back, attempting the exact same thing and crashing all over again. That's basically who McNulty is in a nutshell: a guy who crashes and then, and when he gets a second chance, does the exact same things that caused him to crash the first time, and will keep doing the same for as long as he gets new chances. He learns no lessons, or at least it takes a lot for him to learn.
And yeah, a lot of people hate Ziggy, and I understand why, but I pity him. There has to be some kind of mental illness at work there; he just lacks anything even remotely close to judgement and common sense. A guy like that shouldn't be within ten miles of a criminal conspiracy.
Nice observation on McNulty. As for Ziggy- there’s no mental illness; just a need to prove himself & feed his ego. When I first watch this show I tried to understand him as well.. but he’s just a little fish who thinks he should be a shark. He’s not built for anything but bait. Which is his own doing..

Regarding the waitress, I was thinking exactly the same thing at first. Just re-watched the entire show, and noticed his badge is showing when he's sitting in his booth. She's just a badge-bunny lol

I have known many white guys like Nick, when I'm around they cool, when I'm not then I'm a n****r. I've caught them saying it when they thought I wasn't there. I have a bi-racial friend who looks white and he has told me what really goes on because white people think he is part of 'The White Club'. He has had mad drama because of it. There's levels to it. Nick is indicative of most white racism, he's cool as long as you know your place.
Love your analysis, you are spot on. Nick basically has a sense of entitlement because of being a white nephew of a bigshot growing up in an environment where casual racism wasn't discouraged. He's under a lot of stress and pressure, but at the same time he still definitely has the privilege of being white in this society, and he just can't see that.
How was his dad a bigshot?

It shows how weak Nick is that he has to play big shot around Ziggy. Nobody else really approves of Nick (Frank is always skeptical), so he looks for approval from someone he doesn't even respect. You can feel sorry for Ziggy, but Nick is just a fuckup. What can anybody do for an ordinary fuckup?

I def get Joker vibes from Ziggy. That actor plays almost the same character in a film called Ken Park. It's very messed up and I don't recommend it unless you have a strong stomach

One of my ancestors was in the bottom of a slave ship with a dozen other enslaved being transported between the carribean and south carolina. There was one white irishman in chains as well. Indentured servant. While their circumstances were different, and my grandfather could empathize, at no point did that white man considered blacks equal. Nor was his terms of servitude equal. Nick Sobotka aint new and he’s certainly not-not racist. There is no neutral ground on racism.

Idk how you can emphatically say that when there is a preponderance of evidence suggesting that he is a racist, more than that which suggests he isn’t.
Eternal even highlighted these points in the video. You don’t have to be a skinhead Neo-Nazi like in American History X to harbor white supremacist/nationalist views which Nick is shown to to hold. He’s stereotypically portrayed as a blue collar rough and tumble white American of immigrant stock who despite financial struggle, views those in his racial demographic as above that of black folk in the same economic class.
I said he’s a couple steps away from being a white Supremacist. Not that he was one. Definitely racist but not KKK racist or a threat. The words come straight out Nick Sabotka own mouth and people will still say he’s not racist… this is America.

The main arc of Ziggy's storyline is about bullying. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else comment on this, thank you so much for this :)

@@eternal47777 It's often how it works with people who are bullied, they have some characteristic that focuses the negative attention on them. Ziggy is a bit of a caricature of this in that he's all of it: obnoxious, incompetent, maybe a bit socially awkward, and weak. It tends to lead the audience into thinking that the bullying he receives is warranted, justified. Maybe the show went too far with it. I wonder if they were trying to show something with him and Nick, as Nick is clearly a worse person than Ziggy morally but the way he behaves makes him more acceptable and accepted in his environment.
If anyone deserved to be bullied it was Ziggy. Unfortunately he didn't learn from it.
@@Cobbido He did learn from it, he learned that it was extremely important for him to find a way to earn the respect of the rest of the stevedores so that they would stop bullying him.
You gotta appreciate how they write such real characters that they inspire discussion like the one in the beginning. The whole drug thing etc. is definitely a class issue, but I think it's fair to say that Nick does view it as a race issue. I think it's good to show that a person can be racist without foaming at the mouth everytime they see a black dude.
Edit: Also seems like a good time to mention that the actor playing Frank's brother (Robert Hogan) died last month. RIP.

Ziggy is one of those unfortunates who never find their place in life. He's not built for back-breaking dock labor, his mouthiness gets him into way too much trouble, he has no work ethic or street smarts to work with the Greeks/drug dealers, etc.
And to top it off it's just like you said, everybody around him peer pressures him and knows he's weak-minded/weak-willed, but us the viewers laugh first then reflect later.

That scene explains so much. He pretends like he's trying to figure out how the crash happened, like an intellectual exercise. But really he's just refusing to accept responsibility.
Agree with you about Nick. I seen it myself. Only thing I’d say that people like Ott get some exception status in Nick’s mind. It’s not just about tolerating them. "You don’t act like the others, so your blackness don’t count against you"

Man, your analysis always so on point. Your sympathy for Ziggy is right on the money. A shallow interpretation of the show, Ziggy is just an impulsive asshole, but Idk I think that you are right. He is in deep pain, feels worthless and is desperate for approval, and essentially spirals deeper and deeper until finally snapping. Illustrates how Frank's myopia concerning his adopted union family cost him his TRUE legacy, his son. I highly doubt ziggy would have turned out the way he did if Frank had paid more attention to him

It’s not about being black in my opinion, it’s about not wanting to be poor.
There were hardly any black folk on Dublin Ireland, where I grew up but there were still projects, with all white communities living life with few opportunities, selling drugs and living the same life as poor urban US black folk was the norm.
This is the first time, probably thanks to your commentary? Got my brain going and I've watched this shit like 15 times it seems. But it's the first time I've noted the common theme. Nick looking down on the black drug dealers, Nick's dad, I think that's who that is, looking down on Frank for the same shit ( not doing it straight). I don't know what it really means but they really like doing that same theme in an episode in different ways and it's the first time I really noticed that. I think Nick partially looks at it like he's doing it a more straight way, his dad saying the same thing to Frank. But I know it's not just that cut and dry because Nick ends up doing the same thing and doesn't have a problem with it so it definitely lens itself to Nick being racist as well. Just thought the comp was interesting

I've seen the series more than 10 times in my life and rewatching it with you and starting to realize one of the themes in the movie or the TV show excuse me is personal vendettas the judge, bubbles Omar, McNulty, Bunk at times have personal vendettas that drive them and in turn drive the agenda
