Confused: Jeno and Renjun have already made that 1st step that Jisung did. They know their dreams. They wanted to fly (Renjun's drawing of a butterfly and Jeno's wings). They still have to abide by the rules but Renjun is haunted by his dream of flying (appearing on the target, feeling like the more he obeys, the more he destroys his dream). He hates himself for being unable to stop thinking like that (shooting his own crying reflection). He'd rather never have remembered it (burning his drawing). Jeno abides by the rules but he has nightmares of getting his wings surgically removed and he hides a drawing of wings under his bed to pretend that he's actually living his dream of flying. But they don't know that the other feels the same so they ignore each other. Change: Mark and Haechan went through those 2 steps already. But now Mark notices that someone else (Haechan) also doesn't want to abide by the rules when he sees that Haechan is drawing something other than what they're told to. Haechan's drawing of a fire could represent passion and Mark tapping his finger to the rhythms could represent his love for music. Mark then protects Haechan from getting caught by talking when the guard's about to see his drawing. He later passes him a note to tell him not to change and they find companionship. In teaser images, it is represented by Mark holding a nailed heart and Haechan being surrounded by nails (=Mark wants to protect Haechan). Break: Chenle and Jaemin went through those 3 steps already (Jaemin is seen getting rid of lots of pills and it's possible that they already met and planned this beforehand). They openly challenge the rules by showing everyone that they didn't take the pills at the final test, where one has to beat the other to "death". Even though Jaemin is the only one at rank A (which means that he could eliminate Chenle), he stops fighting first. They choose to disobey together no matter what the outcome might be, they've reached the final step. Dream Beyond: In the end, they needed all 7 to escape. So only when Jisung, the last one (as he is the youngest), doesn't take the pill too, they finally all tie together and break free of this world. It is worth noting that the guards are them, so they literally did this to themselves and each other. They kept themselves stuck here. The ordering voice throughout the films is Chenle's. The films had imagery reminiscing of their debut MV "Chewing Gum" (the facility resembles the dormitory in Chewing Gum, Jaemin finds the box into a dream world and here he finds the box out of this dystopian world, all 7 of them gathered around a box, Jisung breaks the 4th wall and looks at the camera at the end). The Dream concept that they entered with their debut became a dystopian world now, where they force themselves to numbly obey without really wanting to: it's not fun anymore, it feels forceful as they age (in teaser pictures, their feet are wounded because they don't fit the shoes from their debut time anymore). There's also the fact that they had to graduate their unit and wait to be included in another unit someday, only the most popular of them, so they were always in a competition with each other. Now they've break out of the Dream concept (Dream-scape) and got rid of the graduation system (the competition between each other). They remembered why they wanted to be idols in the first place: Jisung wanted to dance, Renjun and Jeno wanted to fly, Haechan had passion, Mark loved music. I think it was a very metaphoric way to say that they were in this together now, that they had remembered the reasons why they wanted to be on stage, and that they were done with the dreamy/youthful concept that they had since debut. A new start, like they say.
Very cool analysis! I enjoyed reading your thoughts. I would point out that the foot injuries we are shown are not the kind of injury you would get from too-small shoes. Those are marks of beating or whipping. Beating of the feet is a form of torture and I think they are punished when they break the rules (ie it is not without cost). And yet Chenle smiles at the bruises and marks on his face. They will continue even as they are being tortured for resisting.

NCT's concept in general has always been rooted in Jungian theory and ideas of manifesting and connecting via dreams. I love how they showed the red thread of fate and how these soul mates are always connected. And they never speak to one another to coordinate their escape ; they just look at one another, smile and know exactly what the others are thinking. (The Dreamies have a "hive mind" at times I feel, after all these years of working together ever since they were very young.) The numbers on the bottom of the key is their debut date 25 Aug 2016. And they are back in "reality" by the end.... but what is Beyond? Jisung has been at the centre of a lot of their concept videos, teasers etc. so it makes sense he will be the "storyteller" again.
The b-sides are connected to the story of the world of Dream. The b-sides are also connected to previous mvs like "boom" and "chewing gum" especially.
