If I were you and had such a great interest in crossings and how they work, I'd take this vid to someone in Network Rail and show how impractical it is to have a crossing in the middle of town. Mums dragging their toddlers across as the barriers drop, hugely obese people convinced that they can cross in time, and the 2 idiots that miscalculated and were almost hit by on the head by the barrier. Most serious was the man trapped inside. The barriers had to be raised to enable him to get out. This caused, understandably, others to think that riding or walking through was OK. A fearful mess!

Mums, dragging their toddlers across as the barriers are lowered, hugely obese people convinced that they can outrun the barriers, the two idiots that almost got their heads bashed in by the barrier that stopped at the last minute. But most serious was the man trapped inside the crossing. The barriers were raised for a few seconds to enable him to get out but understandably some people waiting outside thought this was the opening of the crossing and started to go across. A fearful mess!
Mothers walking kids on crossing while barriers are coming down bad example its like saying oh you can cross when the lights flash on crossing. If you or your kid falls you have less time to react. So don't risk it. So simple but we make it complicated.
Why don't the gates start going down as soon as the lights come on? That's how American ones work, maybe a second or two of delay. These seem to be a whole like 20 seconds

It wouldn't have been so bad if not for the partial raising that caused others, people and cyclists to think that the crossing was being opened!
