    I have to admit, if I'd been Jake, when Michael accused of twisting his father against him, I'd have responded, "How? The man made it clear my entire life that he hated me. He adored you and only put up with me at the end because I was helping him around the house. There was no love from him aimed my way." Which would have made the lawyer wince, probably. That last letter still makes me think that. He wrote it out rather than show any courage and actually TALK to the guy. Because writing it down for after he was gone, he didn't have to face any anger from "Why couldn't you have told me when I was younger and might have believed that you love me, rather than what you actually taught me."

    It's like the stepfather observed and the fact OP stayed to care for him during his last days, he knew OP would be the one to inherit everything. The half brother surely sounds entitled and spoiled.

  • @l0rdapophis

    This is nice and all, but Richard REALLY dropped the ball. You entered a child's life and hid the "love" you had for him all while spoiling your own child directly in front of him.
    No, let me tell you what really happened, because this guy deserves no grace. You didn't love your stepson, it showed, you didn't care. You had your real child and spoiled him rotten, and then expected him to be a decent human being. Then the child you NEVER liked stepped in and ended up being a better man than you, so you realized your mistake and decided to "reward" him at the end, all at the expense of your other child who you failed as well 🤣
    I mean my God, Richard, I love messing with people's lives too, but I gotta hand the crown to you 😂

    Man… this one hits deep
    I feel like I have a similar relationship with my dad, I’m only 17 but I can say I have like all of the same dynamics in the relationship as Richard and OP
    It sucks sometimes but I know my dad isn’t just doing it to be mean
    I have a half sister that he has always gone the soft route with, maybe because she’s a girl and I’ve thought about that
    He’s my stepdad, he’s been with me since I was 2
    He’s always been hard on me and it’s been difficult to cope with sometimes and a lot of times I’ve felt soul crushing pain because I didn’t feel like I was enough
    I love him though, we do occasionally have some good moments, rare but they exist
    Things are getting better on the front of getting treated harshly, it’s more or less fine by now and he just treats me with adult expectations which I’m pretty alright with for the most part
    However he’s only gotten easier and easier with how he treats my sister
    Personally I don’t have high hopes for her future, I don’t know if things will turn out alright or if she will grow to be entitled
    A lot of different factors scare me and I’m just unsure
    But anyhoo that was my take on this story, really heartwarming and gave me a bit of hope that I might see happier days with my dad in the future

    Jesus. Not only should Jake (OP) go full NO CONTACT with his stepbrother, he should also move to another state to start his life afresh, buy another house there, and grow his own family consisting of supportive friends, a trustworthy therapist, and a warm-hearted woman whose family are good people, and makes him feel like he belongs.

      They are half-brothers. Jake still dreams of salvaging some relationship with his brother and refuses to recognize that his brother is a snake who is only interested in money. He should go to the same lawyer and set up a college trust fund for his brother's kid, and that's it. Tell the brother so he leaves Jake live in peace. But I agree he needs to sell that house loaded with sad memories and start elsewhere.

    It is not enough. He ruined Jack with the carrot on a stick manipulation. Jack is 38 with no hope for a family, all what he was is a nurse for the dying ungreatful man, all due to a sense of unreasonable expectations and longing for kindness. Richard also ruined Michael, showing on his own example that you can treat others as the "secondary citizen". Michael would be better if he has seen that others are treated the same as him, but no. The house is not enough. Jack might have had a family with children and his own house by now. And now he has nothing, and eventually is living to die alone.

    In the US, I will lls can be contested if a portion of the estate isn’t given to all inheritors.
    Now with that said it is best to give a home to just one person. Otherwise managing the maintenance and taxes of a place can get complicated.

    • @treehouse2902
      @treehouse2902 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He basically "disinherited" his son and he was of sound mind when he did that. This is why the person should leave all beneficiaries a minimal amount to negate any future dispute. For example, you get left $100, you got left $100. There is no "I deserve x millions or half of the estate" becasue there is no legal stipulation says what the amount should be regardless of the decedent's net worth. You are not entitled to anyone's wealth, blood relative or not unless you are a minor child.

      Affluent people speak like that and considering the father was implied to be will see it actually does fit the story also when you sit there reading your work a thousand times before you post it you're going to make it sound better. ( Not saying Reddit stories are absolutely true there's definitely fake ones and I'm sure their worded to make themselves feel good even though they are the bad guys sometimes but your reasoning for assuming it's fake doesn't hold out ) I know I grew up a middle-class kid in a rich town which made me basically garbage

    • @treehouse2902

      Yes, these stories are fake, but they are also based on real-life situations; the father treats the one child like shit, showers the other siblings with affection, leaves nothing in the will, or leaves everything. There are all kinds of permutations to the shenanigans of golden children and their mistreated siblings.

      Perhaps some people aren't stupid but they simply aren't native English speakers? In my language, the word for a male cousin and a nephew is the exact same, so goes for the word for a female cousin and niece. Which is why English translations of tv shows from my country that aren't properly fact-checked tend to botch that one.

    • @AmanDharveshKhanSchool
      @AmanDharveshKhanSchool 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No it is not because you need to only speak when ur opinion is asked or if anything regarding a topic is asked to you. It is a type of Discipline you know your worth and act accordingly. Even if it is bitter to not speak even if they did not asked you. But still this type of discipline will make you know your own worth and how much worth or worthless people are. One day he will know what this discipline has taught him and I hope he will discipline his child like this too but not too harshly as OP's stepfather did. People won't show their worth unless they understand themselves what they are worth and like OP's half-brother treated him like he's worthless and was rude because he had the arrogance that he was the 'Real' son. At the end , when OP realised what his own worth was as OP read through his stepfather's letters.

    • @amandasmith2399

    • @LinkPizza
      @LinkPizza 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AmanDharveshKhanSchoolNah. I still think it’s dumb. I’d rather not be somewhere where everyone and navigate a good time and I have to sit quietly not saying something because someone’s not speaking directly to me. Especially since in most of the conversations I’ve been in, it’s usually everyone speaking to everyone, so many people never get directly spoken to. That said, I don’t really see any actual discipline in it. It’s just a way to tell someone to shut up, or a way to keep someone quiet because you don’t think they are worth anything, or what they say isn’t worth anything. It’s rude, and teaches nothing, IMO.
      In this story, it’s great the father did good by OP in the end. And understood his mistakes. But he also said he was too harsh on OP. Which probably also included the whole “speak only when spoken to” comment.
