Hi Lamb Chop, what i didn't see covered was the 3 ways of winning at Backgammon:
      1) If you get all of your "men" born off before your opponent does, and your opponent has at least 1 of their "men" born off, you win 1 point.
      2) If you get all of your "men" born off before your opponent, And your opponent does not have Any of their "men" born off, you win 2 points & this is called a "Gammon".
      3) If you get all of your "men" born off before your opponent, And your opponent does Not have Any of their "men" born off, And your opponent has at least 1 of their "men" in your home area of the board Or on the bar, you win 3 points & this is called a "Backgammon" (very difficult to achieve this).
At home, we usually play "Tournament Style Matches" by keeping a score sheet. Usually, you set a Match to be 3, 5, 7, or 11 points. For example, for a 5 point Match, to win this, you must get 5 points (5 wins) or more - it's not "the best of" 5 games. So, by winning a round with a "Gammon" (worth 2 points) or a "Backgammon" (worth 3 points) you can quickly win the Match.

A unique move when bearing off that wasn't shown, but is important to know, especially, when you're "neck to neck" bearing off against your opponent. At the 2:50 time mark, you have 1 piece on the 6 point & imagine on the 5 point there are No pieces there at all. Your dice roll is 5 & 2:
At 1st, with the 5 & 2 dice roll, it appears you can't bear off any of your pieces because you have 1 piece on the 6 Point, none on the 5 Point & none on the 2 Point. But, actually, you can legally bear off the single piece that is on the 6 Point.
Keep in mind this move is only permitted when you have just a single piece on a higher point:
In Backgammon, you can use your dice in any order, the lower number 1st or the higher number 1st. With the 5 & 2 dice roll, move the piece on the 6 point down to the 4 point with the "2" you had rolled.
Now, there are no pieces on your 6 point & there were none on the 5 point. You still have the unused "5" you had rolled. Now, you can bear off the piece that was moved from your 6 point to the 4 point by using the remaining "5" on your dice.
I once had a hand held Backgammon Game that had made this bearing off move & I thought it had cheated! I also had a book for Backgammon that had illustrations & I had actually found the above move discussed.

I believe you should always think of backgammon moves individually; you don't move by the sum of the dice. However, to answer your question simply, you can, if that sum can be played as the separate dice shown.Say for example you have a checker on your six point and no checker on your five point and you roll, 5-1. You could take a checker bear off a checker that was originally on the six, though technically the move would be moving a checker to the five or one point then bearing off

Here's a bearing off move not many know about: at 3:14 imagine there are also no pieces sitting on the 5 point and you roll a 5 - 2. At 1st, it would appear you won't be able to bear off anyone, because, you don't have any pieces on either the 5 point nor the 2 point. But, you can! This is only allowed when there is a single piece sitting on the higher point number (any higher point). You can actually bear of the single piece sitting on the 6 point, because, you can use your dice in any order.
So, you would use your 5 -2 roll like this: move your piece on the 6 point with the dice 2 placing him now on the 4 point. Then, you would use your dice 5 to bear off a piece from your 4 point because there aren't any pieces on the higher points 5 & 6.
This is good to know, especially, when you're "neck to neck" bearing off against your opponent! I was playing against a computer game & it had made that move and i thought it had cheated. I then checked one of my Backgammon books & found that move, was indeed, legal, because, you can use your dice in any order.
Another situation (rule): sometimes, you'll be in a situation where you can't use both of your dice, but, you can move one or the other. You must move the higher number of the dice (even though that may place you in a poor position).

You could have also demonstrated at the 2:50 point how to resolve another roll of 2-1 with the setup you had. You would use the 2 to move the checker on the 3 point to the 1 point and then use the 1die to bear off the checker on the 1 point.

@hej100 that dice is generally only used in tournaments as it basically offers to the opponent to whoever wins, gets double the score that they would of originally got. Bucky will probably explain this in better detail in his next videos.

  • @tomy6917
    @tomy6917 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There are 3 ways of winning in Backgammon & they each have different win values:
    1) If you bear off all of your pieces 1st, and your opponent has at least 1 of his pieces borne off, you win a single point.
    2) If you bear off all of your pieces 1st, And, your opponent has none borne off, you win 2 points & this is called a "Gammon".
    3) If you bear off all of your pieces 1st, And, your opponent has none borne off, And, your opponent also has one or more of his pieces on the bar Or in your home, you win 3 points & this is called a "Backgammon" (very difficult to achieve). :)

    • @tomy6917
      @tomy6917 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

These methods of winning are important when you're playing a tournament style match where you keep score. You agree on "how many points" your match will be: 3 points, 5 points, 7 points, 11 points, etc. The 1st player to reach or surpass the Match Points wins, it's not the "best of". For example, to win a 5 point Match, a player has to have 5 or more "wins to win the match. So, a "Gammon" (2 points win) or a "Backgammon" (3 points win) is a great benefit to add to your match scoring.

Yes and no.It depends on the situation. That would be two moves. Say moving checker from the three to the two point with the one ,and using the 2 to bear the checker off, or using the 2 to move the checker to the one point, then using the one to bear off from the one.Technically, you wouldn't bear off from the three. However, the above is assuming you don't have enemy points on the two and one points. Because both the two and one points are block you wouldn't be able to bear off the checker.

If I understand your setup correctly, I sometimes have troubling picturing backgammon set-up, none. The pieces on your six point are blocked by white's point on your one. So no sixes.Since you have checkers on a larger number namely. the six point you can't bear off from the 4,3, or 2 because to do that you have to have no checkers on higher places. If white didn't have checkers on your one point, it would be a forced move 6/1 (4) That's moving all of your checkers on your six point to your one.

  • @emawe2330

You invert the numbers, what you said was the point n6 was the point n1 etc.. because they are at the end of your side of the board, here you do like it was at the beginning of our board ( on the camera side ). But except that everything is perfect. But still need a little redit on the video maybe hehe

    but what if:
    - you are about to remove the checkers
    - checkers are at: 1,2,5,6
    - you throw a 3 and a 4 with the dices.
Do you remove the checkers from point 2 or move checkers from point 5 and 6?

I think that you forgot to mention that when you bear off all of your checkers, and your opponent hasnt even started bearing off (hasnt taken out any chips out of the board) you win by double. And that rule applies on any variant of backgammon.

Hello. The tutorial is great! I have been playing all my life but is only now I want to get a serious set. I live in madrid Spain and, believe it or not, it is not so easy to find a decent set. I have made research on the internet and found many brands but nothing Convincing enough. The one i am looking is like yours. A briefcase with leather or some kind of fabrik on the board, a nice checkers with weight. Everything I have found so far are the synthetic small boards sold in amazon that are made of plastic. Or the tournament wooden boards. I am planning to expend some money in order to have a good quality, long lasting set, but no 400-500$ set. Any ideas to get me started? Thank you so much.

Two questions. First: if I punch off a czecker of.my oponent and he rolls say a 3, but on point 3 there is one of my checkers. Do I get punched off now or does a point have ro be completely free to get the stone back on the board? If getting back on a point with a single checker knoks him off, lest say I have punched off my oponent and he sits on the bar, and before he gets back in I get all my checkers in the home base and start beaeing them off. Obviously all points in my home base are ocupied, but as I bare them off, eventually one or more points will have one or no checkers on it. Now if the oponent gets his stone back in the game but at the same time strickes me off, what then? I was in the middle of bearing off and suddenly one of my checkera is on the oposite side of the board (if I get it of the bar) help 😀

The pieces on 6 point... Do I have to move the pieces since they are already in the home quadrant? Or...🤷

Isn't there a rule about bearing off where you have to use the full value of the die if you can? For example, if I have 2 checkers on my 6 point, and 4 checkers on my 4 point and my opponent owns my 2 point, and roll a 6-4, I can't bear off 2 checkers from my 4 point - I have to bear off 1 from my 6 point for the 6 die, and since I can't move my other checker from the 6 point (because my opponent owns my 2 point), I have to leave that 6 point checker vulnerable. Nice series of tutorials (and yes, still being viewed 12 yrs later :-) )....

If I roll a 3 and only have pieces in the 2 I would move the piece from the 2 right

This is assuming your opponent does not have points on the five AND one.In such a case, you couldn't take a piece off from the six because you can't move to five or one to bear off from there. I hope that was easy to understand.

2:03 Surely, you meant to say that it has to be the same or _lower,_ *not higher!* (Unless I've misunderstood you.)

What I’d you rolled a 1 and 3. Could you roll off a piece on 6 still?

Question: Say, you have a piece that is 3 moves/jumps from an opponent blockade, and you roll double 3s. Can that piece move 6 to jump right past the blockade, or is it required to move 3 then 3 again, making the move invalid?

Do I HAVE to bear off when I can or can I also move a higher coin? for example: I roll a 5 and could bear off a coin on the 5 point. But ive got a coin on the 6 point, too. Can I move the 6 Coin or do I have to bear off the 5?

Hi, yes you do not have to bear off but it's better to bear off anytime that you can do so.
