    Hi Patrick, thank you.
    Two years ago (at 44 yo), I had never stepped on a sailing yacht -- never. But I had always felt a strong yearning when strolling alongside marinas, and so, 6 months after my father passed away, I decided not to let the years go by without confronting this yearning with reality -- and embarked on the RYA sailing scheme. I simultaneously discovered your TH-cam channel, which I studied assiduously -- I even have a notebook where I keep all your tips and lessons learned!
    I have now sailed a total of 32 days/1000NM, including 14 days solo, and 7 days skippering with 2 of my sons. This is still modest, and was all coastal sailing in Zeeland on rented boats (allowing me to test different models and sizes), with a few outings in the crowded North Sea and lots of locks on the logbook. Next, I will be sailing from Le Havre (3 outings before winter) and then from Saint-Malo (hopefully, end of March). Maybe Croatia in Summer.
    I'm telling you this because you have been my inspiration all along, showing me that the dream can be real and what it could feel like. So, thank you, thank you, thank you. My own adventures are not worth filming (though who knows, maybe one day!), but the powerful play goes on and I'm doing my best to contribute a verse in other ways. A forever-grateful fantom shipmate!

    I know it's winter there, lad, but take heart. Enjoyed your remarks about weight and balance calculations and staying ahead of the boat, and the nav gear we have now. Remember VORs? Come to Los Angeles, it will dry you out and warm you up between those chilly North Atlantic voyages. Cheers from SV Thelonious.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Christian. I grew up in Socal, so am envious of your 'challenging' winters. :-) And yes, I am of the generation of pilots who learned on VORs and NDBs (and often wondered 'momentarily' "where the heck am I?"). We also had dozens of clock faces in the cockpit back then, so I always knew what time it was. As in aviation, you must have been witness to enormous changes in sailing technology in hull forms, navigation, and sail materials. Love your videos. Keep doing what you're doing!

    L'adventure est fini...oh no!
    Deciding to fuel up all jerrycans was wise. There's a Portuguese proverb that says " O seguro morreu de velho" and it means " The insured one died of old age".
    Returning home and being like you never left would only be possible if no learning or gain wasn't achieved in the journey. I believe the more a man learns the more he is presented with questions fueled by the answers he just found. Time everything changes but there is nothing like absence to realize all that changed. Even the songs at the table with family and friends are more harmonious and happy when a man returns. First because with absence love grows and second because of time, even good wines that dress our tables just get better as they age and by so free up the singing. I'm sure you being French, know what I am talking about.
    Congratulations on the capture of the extraordinarily beautiful sunrise. Wow, wow, wow. Merci beaucoup, Monsieur Patrick

    Great video. We are presently sailing in Salvador, Brazil, arrived from Mindelo, Cape Verde, being a good stop. You are going to regret not crossing the equator, respectfully suggesting an early January departure from Mindelo, making it to Salvador in time for Carnival in February. You should consider visiting the protected anchorage at Baia Do Aratu (S12.47, W38.27), approximately 10nm north of Salvador in the Bay of All Saints, Bahia, Brazil. It is shaped like a bowl, surrounded by low-lying hills, virtually undeveloped, probably the most protected anchorage we have ever been in, and the marina's community is safe.

  • @RoyClare
    @RoyClare 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for an awesome 3 months! You ask - philosophically - whether returning to your start point is the same as never having been away. And you answer your own question … compared with setting off on the first leg, when you were a little tentative (perhaps unsurprising after your experience over the winter), the last leg brings you back with a youthful glint in the eye. A new plan. The fighter pilot wants a low fly-by. Yup, being away was an improving influence. The start point is only the same as the end point geographically speaking.
    The discussions about the quantities of fuel, water and spares are timeless. It’s never necessary to actually USE everything to prove that carrying it all was worthwhile. Rather like no one anchored in a storm ever says “I wish I carried less chain and a smaller anchor”.
    Go well, Patrick! Can’t wait to see what the next boat is like ….. 🎉💯🍻🇬🇧👍🏼😎

    As one of those who could never dream of accomplishing such an adventure, a big thank you for sharing the "tears and smiles" of your transatlantic circumnavigation.
    Much one could comment on, but your aviator's comment in your final part about "never having enough fuel" brought to mind that epic conflict of the Battle of Britain, where a contributory factor, considered by many historians to be critical to the outcome, was the limited fuel capacity of the Me109 fighters, restricting the amount of time that they could fly over England in support of the bomber fleets. This in spite of the fact that a form of "drop tank", as used by American fighters later in the War to extend the range of their escort of the USAAF daylight bombing fleets to their targets in Europe, was apparently also available to the Luftwaffe at the time of the Battle.

    You deserve a bow to do very demanding adventures and presenting them with simplicity as if accessible to everyone. You are a natural teacher… I asked a Zen master once how he teaches novices. He answered “make it look easy but not so easy that they think they can skip the training..”. Could apply to you. Chapeau.

    I have watched thousands of sailing videos over the past 2 years or so and must say that I have particularly enjoyed viewing yours. I am, and have been, quite impressed with your sense of adventure and you skill in addressing the various issues that inevitably pop up on almost any ocean excursion. Along with that, I have really enjoyed your commentary and analysis of different situations that you find yourself addressing on a daily basis. Additionally, and equally important to me, I have thoroughly enjoyed your perspective on various topics, your sense of humor, and your aptness &/or propensity to apply well-versed and adequate quotes to enlighten the(a) moment. Thank you & long may your big jib draw...

    Thanks Patrick. It's near 4am here, peaceful in the night. Housebound 18 months with suspected Long Covid. My Westerly Centaur is still in its berth with a new heating system half-fitted from before I was laid low. I've only managed one day's sail since I bought it and completed the initial maintenance, now over two years ago. Your escapades have enthralled and vicariously encouraged me. So glad to see you back, with a new boat, and now you're talking already of your next Intrepid, Endeavour. I can't wait to see what you go for. Me, I'm planning a Nauticat 33 when time, heath, budget and Domestic Director permit. Fair winds!

    Time is the key in your question about leaving and arriving. You can never return to the same place without stopping time. What was a place you left will never be the same place when you return. It is like your Birthday you are the oldest you have been whilst being the youngest you will ever be at that point in time. As always enjoying your vid

    Fantastic! In a couple of weeks, I will hopefully be back in Folleux just a couple of hours north of you to pop my boat back in. Seeing this video is helping feed the anticipation of being back in the Baie de Quiberon. With the three most useless things - I nearly learnt the fuel one the hard way. The runway one, well I survived it, but the hedge and aircraft did not! It made me a bit more cautious. So thanks for a great video that I can watch with my boy without worrying about embarrassing bikini shots or swearing and inappropriate comments. It’s helping instil the sailing passion in him.

      @patricklaine6958  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! I once stayed at one of those places in France where homes surround a runway, and you park your plane in your driveway. At the end of the runway was a hedge, and the perfect imprint of the form of a GA airplane. It sure made you think twice about those high/hot/heavy take-offs calcs.

    Patrick, what a great pleasure to be part of your journey! I have watched from the beginning and enjoyed every minute. The only sailing I have done was in Monterey Bay (Calif.) where I fed the fish the whole time. Even so it was a wonderful experience. I will wait impatiently for your next voyage and hope you continue to be in good health. Thanks again!!

    Bravo to you Partick. A magnificent accomplishment. That you only needed a plier and screwdriver once is a tribute to your preparation. The purpose of preparation is to make vogages boring.
    On another note- In response to your inquiry relating to changes when we return to the start- Bernard Moitessier answered it in part. While leading in that legendary round the world race and heading back to England-he wrote in effect- Liverpooll was a shit city when I left and will be the same when I return. He then made a right hand turn and sailed on to French Polynesia.
    Again, thanks for taking all of us on this great adventure.

      Typical view time on my videos is 8 minutes and 30 seconds Guy. When I do the first cut of pure sailing clips for each video, the video duration is usually about 26 minutes. I try to edit that back to 15 minutes or so in the final version. If I start to include 'lifestyle' stuff, or 'travel-log' stuff, I'd have to cut out even more 'sailing' content. Right or wrong, I made the decision to stick to sailing only...... Thanks for the excellent question/comment.

    Unfortunately in the airlines, we take the minimum fuel, often depart from the intersection but at least we try to go high. As an old aviator I find the first two in this list very difficult!

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, even as a fighter pilot I often did the intersection go. I always wondered how I would explain that to the accident board....... Fortunately, I never had to.
