    "Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's own attributes. The term originated from Greek mythology, where the young Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water. Narcissism is a concept in psychoanalytic theory, which was popularly introduced in Sigmund Freud's essay On Narcissism (1914). The American Psychiatric Association has listed the classification narcissistic personality disorder in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) since 1968, drawing on the historical concept of megalomania." - Wikipedia

      Simple description of narcissism-
      1.) Narcissist: what they can ALWAYS loudly say, “See, I am RIGHT!”
      2.) Narcissist: what they can NEVER sincerely say, “I am sorry, I was wrong.”’
      Narcissists have no genuine insight and no empathy. They fake the quality of empathetic concern only if they want something, like sex. They seek to BE SERVED, but not TO serve others. In truth- narcissists have no idea how to passionately relate to another human being. They only engage with others because they WANT for THEMSELVES something from that person or group.
      Why else would the narcissist arrogantly give away so much of themselves to people who, in their covert opinion, really don’t matter? Meanwhile, the narcissist mostly ignore the shy and pure souls right in front of their face. Often narcissists are merely manipulating the demure and shy person only to induce that poor soul to wait on them hand and foot until they are 85! “Sweetie- If you cook and clean my world, THEN I’ll buy you a BMW! (in the narcissist’s name, of course). They’re raised up to be entitled and spoiled brats!

    Okay i am going to make this comment to respond to a few things that some people do not understand.
    1. "She is a narcissist herself" - Short answer no she is not. People are confusing the narcissism that everyone has naturally in order to consider our ESSENTIAL needs first as the narcissism that lacks complete empathy that she is describing, e.g. i dont care if your mother is sick youre working today, type of narcissism.
    2. "But she speaks about narcissists having a lack of empathy while insisting that narcissists shouldnt breed and live on an island" - That is not the same as having a complete lack of empathy for everyone besides yourself. She dislikes narcissists, okay big deal... anyone who lives with a narcissistic relativs would too. She made a silly comment and people are judging her as if she must be a saint to speak about narcissism.
    3."But she judged him within minutes of meeting him? how is that not narcissistic?" - News flash, we all do... most people do it subconciously but she is a fucking psychologist it is her job to assess peoples psyche so ofcourse she is going to do it.
    4."But she uses her friends?" - Not true. She only spoke about her NARCISSISTIC FRIENDS who use others to their advantage. She did not mention her close friends who she would actually care about and the fact that people dont understand that is ridiculous.
    5. "How can you not be a narcissist and publish a book speaking from authority?" - well maybe because she is qualified to do exactly that. Do not confuse self-confidence gained from years of study, research, practice and teaching with the sense of entitlement that comes with narcissism. It would be narcissistic if she spoke about something that was not in her field with complete confidence, but she has every right to do so on her field of study. That is why andrew asked her on the show.
    Bottom line: if you think she herself is a deep narcissist then you are most likely being defensive because she is describing your characteristics. It is scary that you cannot have an intellectual discussion on narcissism on youtuve without being attacked, this only proves that what she said about social media breeding narcissists is completely correct.

    • @Knuxsega
      @Knuxsega 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      chem I had similar thoughts haha. Got a vibe that most comments are from kids that don't grasp the context of video. Context being that it's an interview setting where she's speaking passionately about her speciality while trying to promote her book.

    • @cheminem
      @cheminem 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Exactly man, so many people in the comments getting angry at her and thinking they know more, but won't even provide any examples for their claims. Definitely narcissists or at the least just ignorant.

    • @poiewhfopiewhf
      @poiewhfopiewhf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      you're not wrong. At the same time she is unnecessarily inflammatory towards people she ought to know are sensitive to such remarks. Hurting the egos of others because 'she gets to because they shouldn't feel so entitled' is childish. Overall this sort of grudge she displays is not professional. I've never heard a therapist talk like this and don't see who it is meant to benefit.
      But no she is not a narcissist or horrible person, there just clearly is room for improvement.

    Two of my ex family members were severe narcissists. It’s a dangerous illness. Narcissists are extremely manipulative people who have mastered their art of deception. They always have to be right and show no mercy to anyone. They care only for themselves and are deeply broken people. It’s hard to see on the outside which is why they are so dangerous to be around. I adopted a narcissist and she manipulated me and lied to me everyday. It took me 8 months to realize what was happening and escape. She gaslighted everything to me and made me feel guilty when it was her who was in the wrong. When we said our last goodbyes I told her I loved her and hoped she got help. She told me she didn’t love me and that everything that had happened was my fault. It definitely tore down my self esteem but it also made me realize that you really don’t know people. For everyone reading this please do yourself a favor and stay away from narcissists. Even if it seems great they will get into your head and destroy you in the end

  • @Individualpsychologe
    @Individualpsychologe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    My brother is a total narcissist. He went on a date once and came back early because it was "an insult" to him how she had not put any makeup on for him. Only to give one example. Living with him is a nightmare, he is so full of himself and he twists everything around to make it out like nothing is ever his fault. He is arrogant and selfish, never gives back.
    He is quite intelligent and knows how to talk for hours (without letting anyone else speak), but he is so oblivious on what people do and do not want to hear. He does not care how he makes people feel, he always plays the victim and he is incredibly judgmental and convinced that he is the best. To quote him "I don't make any mistakes, because I learn from other people's mistakes". He brags a lot, only wants his "friends" around when they can do something for him, but he never does anything for them. But worst of all he gets angry within a millisecond if you say something he doesn't want to hear, often smashing things and yelling his head off. Every criticism on him is a lie and he makes up lots of shit to make himself look better than he is.
    He is the most awful person I know, I liked my school bullies more than I ever liked him. I really hope he never has a wife and kids, because I know 100% he would absolutely ruin their lives.
    I used to hate him, but now I mostly just feel sorry for him. There is no way you could ever convince him to get help, because he is "perfectly normal" and just sees that kind of advice as an attack on him. I don't know what to do with him, other than keeping your distance.

      Damn, it makes you wonder if there's a way. She said that if they themselves do not accept the truth, then there's no hope. What if they literally had no hope? What if they were starving and having nothing to do? Would that change their minds?
      I still live with a narcissist, it invokes such rage inside me, it's like a literal fire in my chest. Hopefully, we will part ways soon...Oh, and that's one of my parents, so I totally agree on the part where she says to put them on an island...

      CeCe Many people with 13 billion dollars own companies that have created jobs for thousands of families. They typically also donate to charitable organizations of their own choice, (a tax break for them) and they also pay a boatload of tax dollars to their country because of how much they earn - even WITH tax breaks they still pay millions in taxes. Don't be sucked in by the rhetoric and chants from the far left (if you are an American). Think things through and think deeper. Jobs and salaries have to come from somewhere or we'd all be without water or electricity! Billionaires may not be perfect, but I'm betting they do a lot more for our country (economically) than you or I have or ever will.

    • @BuGGyBoBerl
      @BuGGyBoBerl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      always the same fake argument. its not that there wont be jobs etc. people want to work and people will work, they will organise and create jobs. you dont need to earn 13 billion to employ people. this is a huge fallacy.
      also funding their lives via salary. first of all they fund themselves mostly just like he funds himself. they work together.
      you basically take the fact that they earn so much as a validation to earn so much.
      they have higher responsibility, yes, and its fine when some people earn more, but the idea of them giving jobs as a validation is flawed as mentioned and its also not about earning more. its about the gap

When we argue, I feel like I hurt for myself and for him (because I feel bad for the both of us), but he remains oblivious. All my life it felt like talking to a wall, a wall that would only become a doting father once I could make him look good to people... At this point, I feel better off not interacting with him at all; I will always care about him, but I cannot deal with the constant hurt I have being around him. Does no one noticed Dr. Ramani's narcistic attributes? She loves to keep reminding us she is a DR she loved to point she teaches at a university; she keeps talking about all her accomplishments. The eerie part is when she was able to do that "dance of conversation" it was all put on she could careless about how his morning went she just wanted to show her power to manipulate a conversation.

    Dr. Ramani 's interview is so enlightening. I was just above average in looks in my culture when I was young. I acted in a film as a heroine. I realized I can only survive that profession if I become narcissistic, histrionic or borderline. I ran from that field and became a psychiatrist in India. But although my post graduation people only reinforced my looks. There was so much sexual harassment, I married a narcissist. Who is very successful. Yes, society does not let you be. They want to make you a narcissist, and blame you and shame you for it. Thank you so much for this wonderful interview. 👍

    I think she is not putting enough effort into portraying how serious narcissism really is! People who have been involved, smeared, abused, manipulated by narcissist will know how much deeper the problem goes other than them not participating in reciprocative communication an a slight lack of empathy.
    A true narcissist might want to break you, destroy you, even physically attack you (low impulse control). They will try to find your weakest point and subtly play you out on it over often longer periods of time and enjoy your demise.
    There is a reason they were described as 'demonically possessed' in the past (which describes them overall better than the preferred less harmless sounding and pc appeasing term of 'emotionally unstable').
    The Eskimos apparently had a preferred way of dealing with the really malevolent ones: they would take them on a hunting trip in the ice and return without them! That's how cunning, dangerous, treacherous and destructive they were deemed by the whole clan! That's how serious they took that problem. No society would act like this if a person were just a bit of an uncaring a-hole.
    Don't underestimate the destructive power a narcissist will have in your life. If you feel like something is just wrong - the chance is that it actually is wrong! Leave! No amount of love, patience, energy and money will be enough to make them change into a better and caring / loving person. Even friendship is just about what they can get from you.
    Where they have walked you will find a trail of destruction and misery and broken hearts in the path. Do not fall for the 'normalisation' of the word 'narcissist'. There is a good reason therapists often refuse to treat narcissists/ borderline personality disordered people. Narcissism (and their more advanced colleagues like the 'greater narcissist, the sociopath and the psychopath'). It is the most severe and often shape shifting personally disorder there is. Be warned!

      @graceamazing5981 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reformed White Knight = Well put, friend ! I agree. They twist other's minds,
      and never put other's 'before themselves' ......... in every circumstances, EXCEPT
      to make a big impression (for their own benefit) - I almost married one... but I ran, terrified ......after many 'trying' years of hoping i was wrong ........ and then they proved true characteristic by quite a collection of brief ruined marriages! I love NOT being attached to that anger / demands / influence / manipulation /
      control / insistence, and the artificial praise & adoration! It is a huge relief to remain free of that and know the ones i associate with live lives of TRUTH !

Tho if he ever does something bad to me he does try hard not to do it again, its definitely a reflex, he tries hard but i know his default is to lack empathy...I know in his childhood his parents left him with a babysitter a lot and that was probably damaging...i know hes very driven and could be successful, i dont believe hes evil but just someone who is damaged, i know i cant change him but i want to help him and keep loving him. They can come off as amazing parents. They may be destroying their children in a very unobvious way. Being a narcissist doesn't always mean they are being mean to their child. They may be very empathetic with their children and only be cold when it comes to their partner. Therefore showing their children unhealthy relationships, allow the child to get away with things they shouldn't just to hurt the other parent. Every thing isn't black and white. Remember this when watching these type of interviews.

      I have a social media account just for narcissistic abuse, psychological abuse. And I have MANY more followers on that account than my personal ones. To me it's a sad reminder how many people are affected by this. I truly feel that narcissists use social media as a hunting ground for their egos. Its disgusting & if I had paid attention to it when I met someone recently, I probably wouldn't be feeling repulsed like I do. I'm embarrassed by his behavior & his need for followers on Instagram and Facebook. That is not a person I want to get close to or get to know better. That's my personal opinion.
