Percival Everett is finally having his moment after 40 years of writing. Erasure is a fantastic novel. I would always sing its praises. Definitely read his other books if you can. I haven't seen the movie but the casting is sublime. It is disappointing they change the way the sister dies. They don't wanna get political over an abortion doctor? Abortion is on the minds of a lot of people though! Great video!

Glad that I found your channel through this topic. I love Everett’s books and I thought the adaptation was excellent. I laughed at the ridiculousness of the publishing/publics reaction to My Pafology. The scenes where Monk is on the phone with the publisher and PR guy. We’re so funny and cringy. Wright was perfect. I agree with you about the sisters death.

That is ironic that the book hasn't received awards and the title is different for the movie.

I so agree the book is better but i disagree by how much. Imo, the book is way better and the movie js a moral failing. Cord curates the film ti cater to white and black liberal sensibilities.
And if course he removes all the class conflicts between and "mammys" her so black professional liberals wont feel indicted anymore than white liberals who are cartoonish.
The characters in the book are mkre fleshed out. The family is classist the brother is selfish, you even mention the sister gets shot, because Cord is too afraid to offend anyone.
I hated the Issa Rae scene. That never happens because the character is meant to be irredeemable because she is a sellout. Cord writes a scene to make the sellout more heroic. Also none of what she said made sense. Its a bunch of Mumbo jumbo her retorts to Monk. The only reason people like it is cause its Issa Rae(meta casting as well?)
Last thing and this is arguably mist important. Erasure came out in 2001, when hood and souless black poverty porn art was being highlighted. Thats not whats been happening the last decade. Cord names New Jack City, Bkyz n the hoof. these films are like 30 years old. The industry currebtly pushes black professionals like him and Issa Rae. Its such a lie, but again, Cord plays it safe because his faulty misinterpretation and subsequent curation of Erasure into a film is meant to appeal a certain class of black liberals which includes media black professionals who will hype this film.
I reccomend you check out Jason Engalnds piece of the film on Defector. He skewers its flaws.
Like the review tho.😊 but the book is Waaaay better imo.

You have almost convinced me to read the book. There are aspects that I find compelling and would read it before watching the movie. I agree and hate the fact that they avoided a very important current issue especially here in the states.

You probably have seen Erika Alexander somewhere else because she was the detective in Get Out. And in case you haven't watched Get Out, you probably don't want to admit that.

Look up Thelonius Monk. He was a real person of intellectual and musical significance as he created 5/4 time (the beat Paul Desmond explored in the song "Take Five") and changed the structure and composure of American music.

Great book/movie review! I enjoyed and laughed out loud while reading the excerpts from My Pafology. It was so ridiculous, especially the names of his children. SMH!

Some of the segments of the film refer directly to Boston. Other segments refer to the Black American experience.

Thanks for the review. Saw the movie. Liked it. Just ordered the book. Tried the audiobook first, but the narrator's voice and delivery style were so different from Jeffery Wright's in the movie that it was difficult for me to listen to him. I really like Wright's acting in most everything he does. I'm hosting a book & movie discussion group on these two works of art. Looking forward to it. We haven't read any sarcasm before. Hope they get it.
Percival Everett's new book "JAMES" seems to be an interesting read also.

I think the book is better, but I kind of agree with some of your criticism. The book is well written, and tackle the family drama much better (but the satire is still the better part). Monk's voice and thoughts are also much more on display. I was very impressed by the author, I went and bought 2 more of his books.
The movie makes some changes that I understand. It is a different medium, and needs to be tighter. However, I didn't enjoy the towned down family drama. Essentially the movie adds a lot of suggar to the bitterness of the book. So, at the end, I felt the whole family drama was a bit of meh, and I wish most of it was cut to concentrate on the satire, which I personally loved and found it very funny, biting and thought provoking (Not sure I liked the added scene between him and the other black author though. It raised some interesting points, but I wish this wasn't raised by the other black author. The movie more or less absolves her). All that said, I think it is highly enjoyable movie and deserves praise.
P.S: I am neither black, nor American, but I could relate to many aspects of the book & the movie.

Absolutely wild that I anticipated then saw AF never realizing it was adapted so I appreciate your work for pointing me towards Erasure. Your preference for the novel is a bonus compliment for Erasure considering my genuine love for the film.
Dug your comedy/drama analysis of both. I personally categorize AF as a true hybrid and the confident grip on both ends made this one of my favorite award season releases. I personally laughed throughout but the complicated conversation around how white people should/did receive AF affirms how smart Cord Jefferson's adaptation is. Every character (including the more parodical white cast) is a comedic archetype turned character study. My biggest worry going in was the comedy would become too one note to appreciate the dramatic narrative (like a good skit dragged out into a feature film), and was pleasantly wrong.

I loved the inclusion of “do you have a permit”, the scene brought me to tears and then made me crack up. I may have been too focused on the people around me not laughing as much. I hope you get the chance to read the book. Let me know if you do.

Judge panel was a laugh riot. Circus act of white liberalism. But the sibling roasts almost win the movie. I had fun, and hearing your review of erasure, I appreciate Cord Jefferson was bold enough to have fun himself.

Loved this review! I thought the movie was hilarious and I enjoyed watching it. I too was sorely disappointed about the change in causation for the death. Erasure was more dramatic and philosophical and made me think. It focuses more on the other parts of Monks life while the movie focuses on the aftermath of sending out the parade book Monk writes. Although much of the context is lost in the film I do think it was a decent and fun adaptation. I was upset with how the book ended and felt validated by the movie ending.

I agree, the book showed what a hard but necessary decision it was to find a home for his mom a little more than the movie.

I recently finished Erasure. The book Monk wrote was sooo bad, I struggled to read it! Lol I got the audiobook and listened to that part! 😂 I plan on watching American Fiction soon. It's disappointing to hear that they changed the way the sister died.
Side Note: I read (and really enjoyed) Station Eleven last year. I didn't know it was a show. I will definitely check it out!

The movie is better. The things you didn’t like in the book are the main reasons why I think that. I liked the book a lot, but his lecture and the novel within the novel make it a hard book to love. Also I saw the movie first. Generally the thing I encounter first is the thing I end up liking better. Have you found that to be true for you? Lisa’s death is basically a plot point needed for the story, so the story is better if the death is less spectacular and more ordinary.

That's a really interesting question, I was thinking about that when making my latest video about I'm Thinking of Ending Things. I saw the movie when it came out(2020) and just read the book last month. Loved the movie and I think it made me love the book more. There have also been times when I've read the book first and didn't like it but really enjoyed the adaptation.

I thought it was funny, but, as you say, not all the time, more of a drama and also, kind of a satire.
