My sense of direction comes from observation. At my latitude shadows always point north if it is around noon. Buildings in town and trees in the forest have green algae on their north side since that side is always in the shade. Most cities and towns have streets that either run north and south and east and west. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Remembering a map of your area will help you know which way it is to different towns in your area. I always keep a mental note of which direction north is. At night the north star is easy to find and once again the moon rises in the east and sets in the west. I have no native ability to know directions but I can quickly observe my surroundings and get reoriented.
