What does a climate-conscious cultural sector look like, and how do we get there? Is it by declarations of emergency, by reduction of institutions' carbon emissions? How might we reimagine the purpose and practices of our institutions and programmes to address the environmental futures we might now expect?
In the wake of COP26, this timely roundtable brought together a range of speakers from Scotland's museums, galleries and universities to interrogate the climate crisis and its impact on the sector. We addressed current debates in the environmental arts and humanities, shared transformative ambitions for our organisations and their values and practices, and considered what measures are already being taken to reduce the environmental impact of this sector whilst raising its eco-consciousness.
Speakers included Lewis Coenen-Rowe (culture/SHIFT Producer at Creative Carbon Scotland), Alexander Goodger (Manager, Dundee Museum of Transport), Professor Andrew Patrizio (The University of Edinburgh), Victoria Robb, (Education Manager, National Mining Museum Scotland), Alex Smith (Climate Officer, Museums Galleries Scotland).
Organised in partnership with Museums Galleries Scotland. This event forms part of the doctoral training programme for SGSAH’s Cultural and Museum Studies Discipline+ Catalyst.
Organised by Dr Rachel Harkness, Dr Kirsten Lloyd and Natassa Philimonos (The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh College of Art) with Alex Smith (Museums Galleries Scotland).
