    Love this man and although the doubters maybe cannot engage in the knowledge offered by the great Buddhist masters, Bob Thurman is so clear and simple and downright amusing in his delivery, that it's impossible not to think carefully about what he says.

    Years ago I read Bob's translation of the Vimalakirti Sutra, an old Buddhist text about an archetypal boddhisattva. I somehow "knew" that here was someone (Bob) who knew.
    I have never doubted it.
    Thank you Bob and all who made this talk possible.

    Buddha Bob -- as he was called at Columbia University -- is absolutely the best :) I wonder how come some people don't get that some things he says is tongue-in-cheek, like women are more enlightened ... This great scholar delivers message of profound wisdom, massage of libaration, in a modern, entertaining language, very accurately too, without everything-is -the-same-devious-thinking trash that often oozes from the lips of so many so called gurus....

    Dear friends at SAND: the title of this video really doesn’t do it justice. I clicked on it purely because it was Bob Thurman, but please consider a more engaging or even accurate title. This is a really fun presentation, but there is really deep existential content presented here - dreams, afterlife, social responsibility- that others might skip over based on a title that is a little too glib. I love your videos and would love to share this one on social but don’t think the title is accurate or even enticing.

      @@tenzinthomasmasami The title comes, in part from Professor Thurman's suggestion, he is working on a book about how "Buddhas have more fun." He's very passionate about reminding the world that the Buddha's discovery was about the blissful nature of reality, not suffering. Here's a recent talk where he digs deeper into the idea: th-cam.com/video/rjzr1OtzHSM/w-d-xo.html

    I love this channel. It is ironic that the logo of 🕉️ = MC2 actually represents dualism, not Om, and not the Absolute. Since the speed of light squared requires time and distance and the Absolute has neither, it is timeless and motionless.
    It might be more accurate to put, Om does not equal MC2. Or perhaps use the symbol of yin and yang. ☯️=MC2? What do you think? Can science and spirit actually be reconciled? 🛐⚛️=☮️.

    Amazing talk and posting this out. Having lived in the remote high Himalayas bordering Tibet (30 miles away) for the last 18 years, and the lower jungle regions, and being a psychotherapist for 32-years before that, it has to be said that this 'nothing' as per Buddhism is not what's been found to be true/reality, either via personal experience or hearing many accounts from shaman/yogis. What has been experienced is described in ancient Yogic science/Hinduism; the dissolving of a personal egocentric self followed by tremendous expansion into being every single thing simultaneously - both in form/manifestation and as light itself. In other words, there's no personal self (rather than 'nothing') which leaves a feeling/experience of emptiness because the ego-self has dissolved. And also to add that I've found Buddhist's to be not an innately joyous/playful - or generous as Hindus.

    • @bauddhbhaarat5943
      @bauddhbhaarat5943 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      "Shunyata" (translated as "emptiness/nothingness") is a later Buddhist (Mahayana) technical word.. (Shunya in sanskrit means void). You are taking the dictionary meaning of the translation of the technical word and beating on it. The true meaning of Shunyata would be more like "there is no other". All said, the original sanskrit word was itself a bad choice, as Buddhists got labelled as nihilists due to that.

    • @yoya4766
      @yoya4766 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I agree Buddhists are not joyful, especially the western ones.
      I also just read a comment that Ramana Marishi said there's no karma, just spontaneous happenings. I feel karma is a restrictive concept that keeps the flock in check. Rather like the commandments.
      Hinduism is more lively, vibrant and all encompasing than the very dry, limited morose Buddhism. I routinely dislike it, and repeatedly get sucked back into its vortex.

      No. Science is not interested in the subjective, but rather objective, empirical proofs that can be verified by scientists the world over of different languages. It changes with new discoveries.
      Religion well never, ever offer you that AND if you question, you will be guilted and shamed and expected to be down and go away and beg forgiveness for the audacity of using your brain.

    The very initial distinction between so-called Relative and Absolute is problematic. There is neither Relative nor Absolute. In fact, one can see all seemingly relative phenomenons and existence as ultimately an "Ineffable Absolute" that is somehow "behaving or appearing as relative" to us self-aware sentient beings with a limited canonical point of view...
    Or on the other hand, one can indeed also see the whole world and phenomenons as absolutely relative where absolute has no meaning at all because everything is relative; however, the only way to assume/imagine such an absolutely relative universe would be to think it as eternal, as infinite, which is problematic as well! Why? Because first of all, it contradicts the very core Buddhist concept of "Emptiness" as ultimately there is no such concepts as "Eternalism" either. Because those very concepts of eternity and infinity as anthropomorphic concepts are also "empty" of essence. Second of all, infinity is always infinity of something, infinity of phenomenons, worlds, stuff, numbers and so on and so forth, and infinity cannot be just infinity by itself, it does not even make sense to begin with!
    What I'm trying to say is that, in my humble opinion, when one reaches the very edges of her/his intellectual capabilities which is usually the concept of infinity in our mind (the concept of infinity represents the very edge of our intellectual rational capacity which beyond that, we cannot "know" anything rationally), one does not necessarily need to simply "assume" stuff or bring about overly anthropomorphic justification simply because those mysteries go beyond the capabilities of human beings. If there is a mystery that cannot be realized by usual means of our mental intellectual capabilities, then we should not simply modify the mystery or come up with absurd answers simply to satisfy our rational minds! ...
    In other words and in this example, "Relativity" is a concept in the language, and language as a medium with which we are not only communicate with each other, but also think with! (without language thinking/rationalizing is impossible) is not ultimately real. On the other hand, "Absolute" is also a concept in the language which just like infinity cannot exist in actuality nor can it be even imagined conceptually! The truth of the matter is that the "Nature of Reality" if you will (for the lack of better term) is neither This or That (hence the ancient practice of Advaitic Neti Neti), the Nature of Reality stands even beyond being and non-being, hence it cannot be even proven or disproven as by standing beyond all concepts, existences and phenomenons, it means that it also stands beyond time as we define it. Therefore, the Nature of Reality by definition stays "Ineffable" and beyond anything graspable by us rational humans.
    In fact let me finish this by asking this question: How can one attempts to know an ineffable substance which ultimately stands beyond "Knowledge"? Is not it absurd to assume that one can somehow know "That" which stands beyond "Knowing" by simply knowing it? ... That which stands beyond knowing is by nature "Unknowable", and that which is unknowable cannot be known by knowledge, period...

    Oh, really, "one life only" makes us irresponsible (around 8:40)? How about the "many lifetimers", who encounter a miserably suffering person, only to shrug their shoulders, reflecting that the person must have done lots of evil in past lives to end up in that state. No question of helping them, of course, because that would prevent the wretch from getting their just desert. They brought it on themselves and deserve it, having done so much evil. Makes it easier to understand some of the scenes you are bound to witness in India if you spend enough time there...

    Women are more spiritually enlightened then men> Im sorry but this is not the Tao- The true master shows no favoritism, There is no better or worse then. I am a follower or Zen and Tao, Whenever I hear things like this It always strikes me as so distasteful and not honoring the teachings- Their are no chosen people, women , men, black , white - It simply is not true- the truth is this moment. And compassion is key, Humility is key . It is a dis service to women to boast them like this, maybe they wont heal themselves of the human dysfunctions that we all suffer from because they hear things like this, I meet more suffering women everyday the same amount as men. How do I know this? because I look within myself. peace

    Why is it, that we are amused at men speaking worthlessness? As though riddles, are all we want to hear. I can't judge this man on his whole life. Why has everyone forgotten, what drove Siddhartha Gautama? Everyone want's to be god-like. Without the responsibilities. This is all laughable. If it weren't such a horrendous distraction. How dare anyone, speak with such certainty. You better be available, for debate.

      My friend the way of Buddha is self-experience and from those experience, there is a moment of realization. The only way is to keep quiet and practice and experience because no one is right or wrong in the Buddha concept.

      I understand perfectly, the need to obfuscate the way. And I reject the notion, that I should make it difficult. To comprehend. That, is the easy part. Putting the plan, into action is impossible, without earnest intention. Therefore, I submit, the 'powers', can never fall, into the wrong hands.

    Bob Thurman is putting others perspectives down.... I don't like that....by the way also Harari does buddhist meditation practice. Why do we grasp this rebirth/reincarnation? Either you believe it or not but there is no way to know. All there is right now is a story. Enlightenment could be as mondane as being non reactive.

      Sorry, but we can only express ourselves relative to how other people relate themselves. We're stuck in dialogical mode, so I understand you don't like that stuckedness. Sorry, Kai, I should have remained nonreactive, but instead thought I'd engage.

      But wait, I do take issue with the 'bastard' part. Siddhartha did have a father Śuddhodana and mother Māyādevī and belonged to a very fine family. His mother may have died when he was very young, and he may have been raised by his aunt, but that hardly makes him an illegitimate child.
