Guarantee over half these comments don't even have livestock. We were alarmed the other day by our flock and i ran out armed and a fox was taking off with one of our hens. I took a life to save one. Our hen came running back terrified and she has been doing great ever since. How is that wrong?

He did the right thing. If these animals weren't a problem the government organizations wouldn't be ok to their removal. The predators also Carry many diseases that can wipe out a group of fowl. As food becomes more expensive in the stores more and more people will start getting chickens and turkeys. We can have everything but swine where I am. I was told The only place that can have swine is town hall, as long as they stays in their cubical. Then of course DC has most in the country's swine... and on the local level, the capital buildings across the country. I've seen a large Dog ripped to shreds by a coyote, over 1000 stitches, but survived. Bobcats are the opportunist like most cats. We have them all over where I live, north of Phoenix in cave creek AZ. They not only kill farm animals but they kill pets. Lots of pets. We have so many people who that move out to AZ without having any information on living with wildlife. we had, HAD, a large heard of deer on our Mt, black mountain. But every winter snowbirds would take out a few. They are gone now which leaves the 3 or 4 mountain lions in the area in search or other things to eat. We have coyote and foxes of course but the Bobcats, Mt lions will walk right down the street where my home is. They are on our roof as well.
@@Nateishungry They're proven otherwise. Killing coyotes just puts predator pressure on them and makes them procreate more to fill the void. LGDs just keep them at bay, so they don't have any voids to fill. They just stay away.

Dude. Sorry, but I just can't. I have had predators, including a pack of coyotes kill a herd of my goats. (They only ate the organs and left the rest to rot) But it makes no sense to me to kill animals that may not have been the culprit, away from the livestock yards in question. In my opinion, those leg traps are cruel. You are luring predators/scavangers that aren't even in the pens that may be innocent and are guilty of nothing more than trying to scavenge a meal that is already dead.

I think a livestock dog is very necessary for farms. A lot of homestead with livestock and predator pressure has several dogs and even donkeys to help out. It broke my heart to see the bobcat trapped in the very hurtful device. I hope that you think about the possibility of guard animals instead of go with the traps.
@@SilentDarkAngel16 donkeys (and mules) are territorial and will chase predators away, they’ll even become aggressive and kick and stomp and bite if scare tactics don’t work. This applies to cougars, coyotes etc. Sounds weird because donkeys are cute and goofy, but it’s true.

I’ve had bobcats many times, even in broad daylight come and take my birds. Never would I trap them in such a fashion. I modified what I DID, and how I secured my animals. The onus is on us to,keep our animals safe NOT kill every predator possible. This made me sad and disappointed. That beautiful bobcat and fox.
Agreed. It's up to the human to keep predators away from animals they keep, not kill wildlife because they outsmarted the human. I was also saddened by the loss of the wild animals; I was really hoping for a humane trap-and-release scenario. Disappointed about the painful snap-traps. Additionally, the area needs these predators to keep other nuisance critters at bay, like rabbit, snakes, gophers and the like; the overall health of their lands depends on a healthy wild ecosystem.
In France bobcats are extremely endangered. Last time I checked, there were only 7 left in the wild and not doing so good because shepherds were still killing them out of fear for their sheep. I couldn’t believe you killed that cat. Wildlife is one of the most beautiful gift of nature, we shouldn’t have the right to do whatever we want with it.

you haven't lived on a farm have you. A bob cat kill ur animal? it's dead. UR OWN DOG kills an animal? it's dead. If your on a farm you do what you have to do to keep ur animals and ur family safe form anything that may be harmful, that's why they have to put there animals in every night, that's why they have to get electric fences, thos animals are wild and wild animals will eat ur farm animals and if they do they need to be put down or re-homed and in this case the wild life people didnt feel the need to come out and re-home it so 🤷♂️🤷♂️, it's very simple!!

I am somebody who own chickens so i witness predators like this, but i never kill them.. i just let them go, they hunt for food and not for fun. You may be thinking that i just let my chickens go die, but no i love them dearly, so if i spot a predator near my chickens, i would just capture them then release them no matter the species.

The fence is a good idea, but how expensive would that be? And how effective? Coyotes are undeterred by slatted fences, and chain link fences take a lot of prep work.

I love you guys and have followed you for years, but these traps are inhumane. Please buy an actual livestock guardian dog! Joey is a great herding dog but they aren’t guard dogs, ask any dog enthusiast and they’ll tell you herders, especially collies, aren’t meant to guard. It’s sad to see these animals suffer when it could’ve been prevented buy a dog. Again love you guys just need to speak up when something like this happens! (EDIT) Killing the animals isn’t the full problem, it’s what it will do to the ecosystem and the inhumane way they had to suffer. Predators are important for the balance of the ecosystem and killing them wont stop them from coming. How is it inhumane. both Canada and The US have strict and very regulated trapping, Heck there's even a division of law enforcement to for animal conservation. if traps where inhumane they wouldn't be legal simple as that. And why livestock dogs, i get that there effective and what not and i'm gonna be honest i actually have one but i would rather have the predator killed via trapping than the predator killed and my dog potentially injured or also killed. the ecosystem will not be damage from predators dieing
@@brennenmichel8855 there are strict laws that regulate and control over trapping to protect wildlife. They're not to protect people or livestock. They may have trapped and killed two animals that weren't involved in the killings of their livestock by baiting them, which is unethical and inhumane. I wouldn't consider dogs to be predators because they don't fit the niche of one. They're domesticated animals. Generally, there are particular livestock guardian breeds that do pursue predators, but most livestock guardian breeds stay and guard livestock. Studies have shown that livestock animals on farms are the most effective deterent for predators, even more than guns and fences. In my personal opinion, it is the farmer's responsibility to deter harmful wildlife interactions. They lost a rooster they weren't using for breeding, a female turkey that has no place to lay eggs in an all male poultry run, and a rare female duck that had potential for breeding purposes by a lake far from the farm. And in any case, the children are more likely to be attacked by their own farm animals than a wild one. I respect your disagreement but sadly nothing was solved in this video. The coyotes will be back, and even when those local coyotes are successfully trapped and killed, new ones will move in. Dogs will make it easier for you to train them. Their dog Joey is a herding dog, that doesn't herd. Her unused potential makes her not a good fit for the farm. Sadly, the cats serve more of a purpose than she does.

However, I don't believe that it's fair to make sweeping generalizations about the United States and its wildlife management practices. Different regions have different challenges, and it's important to find solutions that work in each specific context. studies have show that Trapping animals can help control populations, spread of diseases and damage to property. the only reason why it's inhumane is because you don't look at other people's point of view.
@brennen michel even if it means trapping and dispatching uninvolved animals? The camera trap caught only one coyote, and they ended up trapping and dispatching a fox and a bobcat. I mentioned the poultry killed because the farm is more for ornamental use than it is practical. They weren't being used for breeding purposes or meat production other than the duck. They aren't losing money from those losses. Livestock are replaceable. Wild animals aren't. Farmers don't have to use lethal means to protect their livestock. It's unsustainable and more work and more expensive than owning a livestock guardian dog.
Dispatching is just not the answer. Not because I'm soft hearted, but because predators are a naturalnlart of this world. You need something to keep them away not kill them. God bless!
Predator management is important and needed, especially once they have a taste for blood from your flock, and sadly this is the most humane way to do it
Once a wild animal finds an easy meal, they keep returning. Most of those animals, although intelligent, are also opportunistic. They will not just stop showing up. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions.
The biggest problem with traps is that you may not catch the actual culprit. Far better to make sure that your livestock is secure with good fencing and guard dogs are also a good idea. Sadly that bobcat and fox could have been totally innocent and have lost their lives for nothing
Plus they really didn’t want to dispatch the bobcat they wanted to send it to the conservation but yeah, I hate raccoons, rats, wild cats, AND foxes they hunt my chickens raccoons and cats are the most common down in Missouri where he and I live.
Predator proof your poultry with fully enclosed larger structures, boredom busters and multiple feeders /water would alleviate alot of the fighting among your birds and would give them a happier healthy and lifestyle
@ThatOneSam also training an efficient herding dog is harder than training a guard dog. Yes the latter isn't easy either (creating a symbiosis between the dog and the birds etc), but herding dogs need to respond to certain types of commands to guide the animals a certain way, to make them all go through the same path etc. Guardian dogs don't need that kind of training, they're are needed to be taught how to respect the birds and protect their territory. Both those roles are way easier to teach a dog because certain breeds have "protect the land" code basically written in their DNA
So I read through the comments and there were many suggestions to get a Livestock Guard Dog and that’s the way to go! They scare away the predators without killing them so everyone wins. If you trap or shoot the predators all you’re doing is making an opening for new ones to move in. It’s a never ending cycle. Joey is a good dog but she is not a livestock guard dog. I hope you get a LGD soon!

I've seen vids and pictures of the remains of coyotes and foxes before that got caught by an LGD and trust me, the sight ain't pretty. Bloody mess would properly be the best way to describe it.
@@whitehouseonthehill LGD’s rarely get into physical alterations with predators. Their presence, sounds (barking) and smell do the most for deterring an attack. Especially if you have more than one.
I lost 7 birds in 1 week. So I went and got a Great Pyrenees pups. At 4 months old his bark was already very deep. I haven’t seen any evidence of one since
If you have one coyote, you have many. They multiply like crazy. We have them here in South Central IL., as well also Bobcats. We have goats and got two mini donkeys. No problems with coyotes or cats any longer. The donkeys will kill them if they get near any of our animals. They know that donkeys will kill them. Our neighbor a mile away had problems with coyotes getting their chickens and since we have gotten the donkeys, they have not had any trouble with coyotes either. We have had our donkeys for 6 years. We had a black lab when we got them and she knew instinctively to not go in the pasture from the day we brought them home. We love our mini donkeys.
Been here since 2019, and I know you guys have your animals safety in mind but trapping is not it. Please consider getting dogs or a donkey that will scare away predators. I know its a lot of work but it has to be better than killing animals who are only trying to survive.
@@whitehouseonthehill Its extremely rare that LGDs fight. They are protectors, that scare things with barks and scent, not trained killers. As long as you take the time to train them properly they will scare things away, not kill them. I know you guys are capable of doing that, and I'm still looking forward to your content in the future.
I'm a firm believer in using herd dogs to protect flocks. Last year when my dog passed away a bobcat and some coyotes got to my chickens that I let free range on 40 acres, so I borrowed some of my neighbors dogs to run the property while my new Mcnab pup grow up a bit. Now shes running the property and the Bobcats and coyotes stay away. It's better than trapping and dispatching. The only thing my chickens have to worry about now or Eagles and Hawks but that's what my roosters are for.
I've been following your family's story for a few years now. I gotta say this one's been one of the heaviest on my heart. I fully understand why the fox and the bobcat were put to bed, but it still makes me so very sad and the traps used were too cruel. There are better options. You may also want to invest in a livestock guardian dog for your flocks. Tough, hearty dogs that can stand up to and scare off predators.
It’s difficult situation anyway you look at it. Predators are a threat, even if you have a guard dog, you also risk the life and well being of the guard dog.

The fox and bobcat looked so sad in the trap. They are animals too and need to survive. When we had foxes kill our chickens we didn’t kill the foxes, but changed our fences and coop so they got locked in at night. And sometimes you still loose an animal. That is the consequence of living with predators. But we never killed them. I know its ‘normal’ in farming to do so, but its really not necessary. Just make it harder for them to get your animals than a wild rabbit and they will leave them alone.
You guys really need a livestock guardian dog. There's a really incredible Anatolian shepherd breeder here in michigan, Mythos Anatolians, that I would recommend.
An Anatolian Shepherd? A giant breed that has both the strength and temper to go toe to toe with lions. Around little children? Well ain't that a recepy for disaster? All that needs to happen, is for the dog in his "teenage years" (physically nearly fully grown, but mentally still a pup around the age of 1-2 years) to play to rough with one of the toddlers. Jake and Becky are going to have the authorities breathe down their necks faster then they can say coyote.
@@highlyopinionated5611 yes, a dog that when trained appropriately is a fearsome livestock guardian but can also be a perfectly amicable family companion. It's about the dog having appropriate temperament and people being conscious of the dog. I know many farms who have livestock guardians and small children.
Time to stop watching this channel. I understand that they want to deal with these issues in their own way. But I have much better examples in other channels who at least try to leave their ego and emotions out of the decision making. I can see in their replies to the comments that they're frustrated and resort to ridiculing other's advice instead of considering it, even when it comes from fellow homesteaders. Have you thought about adding some donkeys to your homestead? They're lethal when it comes to predators. The downside is that they can be pretty mean with people too...they are also known to bond with people rather profoundly. It would be cool to see your family homestead add them. If there's one thing about you guys, you're incredibly observant and share EVERYTHING you learn when you try new tactics and animals.
I dont usualy comment on videos but this one coming from you really upset me. I have been following you since the birth of Bamboo. You have to re-thing the whole position of your farm and what you are teaching your children. Respect of wild life or the usual mentality that wild animals are the enemies of farmers. I am sorry to say that but here in rural France such video would have you banned from social médias with about a dozen law suit from wild live protection association. I understand that you want to protect your animals and that you were upset but your reaction was disproportionate. When a fox or a weasel killed my birds recently I blame myself for not having protected them properly. I didnt blame the fox that hunted easy prey. I live on his land and not him on my. Good luck in finding the adequate solution. And I am sure you will !
Two Anatolian shepherds or two Great Pyrenees or two donkeys will deter the predators. Removing the predators from your farm just opens up the territory for other predators to move in. Trying to relocate predators doesn't work because you'll most likely be dropping them off in the territory that's already occupied. Secure housing and fencing, solar motion lights, water scarecrows, and livestock guarding animals will hopefully reduce the predation.
Livestock guardian dogs kill predators, you’re aware of that, right? Also, predator control is a real thing. Yes, there will be more. But we can keep the numbers down on our property.
You could try to use different types of urine crystals to scare predators away. The scent will keep them away from your animals if you spread it around the perimeter of your property. That way you both wouldn't need to dispatch animals or need to use those foothold traps. Wolf urine scares bobcats and coyotes away

@@whitehouseonthehill It's just another level of protection that would help keep predators off your property, and its something you could look into in the future. We used it to scare off smaller animals like raccoons and opossums down here in Florida so I know it does work and the smell wasn't that strong to us. I know everyone is suggesting a livestock guardian dog and that's a long term solution for the future that you could think about as well. I know predators are a really big issue and it's frustrating that everyone reacts so strongly to when you need to take care of them for your animals safety, so I don't want to make it seem like it's the only option or even the best but it could be helpful even just to the addition to traps if you feel it's necessary. You should of course do whatever you feel is necessary to protect your animals!
Your farm is taking habitat of beautiful animals such as bobcats and foxes, which probably did NOT bother your livestock. You have the money to build a large aviary but not 2 buy guard dogs? In some states you can get guard dogs for FREE as rescues, especially when they're mixes such as Pyrenees and Anatolian shepherds. Bobcats, especially, are leary of humans. You should've thrown a tarp over it and released it, NOT killing it. It's even more sickening that you killed the bobcat and fox, and just let the bodies rot. At least harvesting the fur would've been halfway positive. Glad you decided to cease trapping and, " dispatching," wild life in your area. I hope you'll rethink your cheapness about not getting guard dogsike ALL remote ranches with small stock generally do.
@@whitehouseonthehill would have helped if I were there. Grew up on a farm and volunteered at a state park rehab center. Never rescued a bobcat but dealt with raptors such as great horned owls and red railed haeks with nasty beaks and talons. We had a bobcat which visited our barn a few times, likely when female cats were in heat as the bobcat never ate any of the cats (which bobcats can do). Our feathered stock was all brought in at night. Or in permanent runs/ flight cages. Ducks had a floating platform on pond. The only losses we had were some ducks to foxes. That was after the dogs passed away. Got new dogs and no more problems.
Wow, such beautiful animals (Red Fox and Bobcat) It's sad to see an animal "dispatched" because he was lured in with food and might not have been the animal that attacked your farm animals. I definitely understand that once it's trapped, there really is no other way to get it out of the trap safely so it had to be "dispatched" but it's still sad. Not a farmer and while I’m not against killing because it is needed to some degree.. i don’t see how this will help keep the predators away. They will keep coming back and you will have to keep resetting traps and killing… it’s not like an infestation inside your home where once you clear it you’re good.. this is the wild- there’ll always be more. i also agree with a livestock guardian. Creates a barrier/presence that will keep predators at bay. Or at the very least, get better housing for the livestock.
Wild predators would be thieves if they had a conscience of the law. But since they don't, killing them for being what they are is not right. It's you who is an invader in their habitat, not the other way. It's your responsibility to protect your animals, but it's also your responsibility to do it without killing wildlife. Your livestock is yours to kill because it's you who gave them everything they need to live. But wild animals are just not yours to decide on their lives. It would be the same if you killed someone's dog. In their own yard.
Please don't set any more traps. You've moved into their area and are providing them with easy meals - there is no fault in those animals taking your birds. As long as your birds are lacking in proper protection, assorted predators will keep coming around for the easy meals.
@@whitehouseonthehill That's not what I said. As owners of animals, it is our duty to protect them, and there are many ways that can be done. I just don't feel that setting out a baited leg-hold trap that results in shooting the animal is the best way to go about it. You can continue to follow that route, collect a considerable pile of dead predators, but there will still always be more around to fill in the void. Everybody loves chickens. Assorted birds of prey, bobcats, foxes, coyotes, opossums, raccoons, weasels, minks, dogs...you can't kill them all off to make it safe for your chickens to be able to roam free. But you can build them a secure run, with hardware cloth and lumber. If you feel that that's being mean to your birds, then you have to suck up the losses to other animals doing what they are born to do - seek out easy prey. And if you find that going out each night to count heads is too much work for you - not your child - then maybe you should rethink the number of birds you have. Believe it or not, I"m really not trying to be an a**hole here. I"ve lost birds to predators and it sucks every single time. But I try to learn from each instance where the gaps are and then fix them. Setting out bait for a trap, regardless of your plans once a predator finds that bait, is just going to attract more predators - it will never end. Keeping your birds securely out of a predators reach will eventually lead to the predator moving on to find food elsewhere.
Fences and facilities take time and lots of money. I can only work on a few projects at a time. With the predator pressure we were under, we had to act quickly. It took us a year to put up our front fence that went over a quarter mile. Yes, this is not our permanent solution to the problem.
yeah needlessly killing wild animals like this is absolutely ridiculous.. i think this is when i unsubscribe.. i have lived on a working farm and we never has any need to kill any of the wildlife in the area because we had our property locked down
Great Pyrenees are the best dogs for this. I have two and they tag team to keep the predators away. Saw them run off a raccoon in less than 3 minutes of it showing up on our cameras.
@whitehouseonthehill i wasn't gonna comment as a lot of people hit the nail on the head to what i wanted to say but i need to im all for protecting your family and your livestock BUT only when what YOU as the farmer have done what you needed to to protect your live stock first that "Fencing" for the birds is NOT gonna keep predator's out you need to finish building your Avery ASAP make sure its the right wire that will actually keep predator's out not that mesh stuff, and get a livestock guardian dog also, also to catch the coyote use live traps get rid of the foot traps please those things are wrong and should never of been invented along with snares, those are cruil ways to trap animals if you had used a have a heart those 2 beautiful animals would not of needed to die and if you as the farmer had your livestock in the correct enclosures in the first place there would of been no need for having to trap in the first place, humans forget WE moved in on THEIR homes, WE took THEIR territory's away, WE need to learn to live with THEM and do the right thing is livestock and animal owners to build what will protect our animals from predator's so that innocent animal lives don't need to be murdered to protect what we failed to protect for doing what they need to do to survive if their is now way for them to get to the animals then they will give up and move on
How do you know that’s not what they are already trying to do? Of course they want to finish their Avery as soon as a possible. But big projects are reliant on being able to get all the supplies you need as well as other factors. Maybe don’t judge too much from the outside looking in. Most farmers try the best they can do in the circumstances they are in, but it comes down to it, their flock and family comes first. As soon as they can finish the Avery things will be better.
I wrote my previous comment before watching the whole video. Upon watching the rest of the video I have to ask.. how many other animals besides the coyote you were after had to die to save your damn chickens? And, you didn't even bother to check the laws concerning trapping until AFTER having trapped two beautiful wild animals. Your chickens are NOT worth the lives of multiple other animals. Build a taller fence. Use humane live traps. Get a predator dog to keep them away. But STOP maiming and killing all manner of wild animals just for a few chickens.
It’s devastating to see animals lives being taken away, it is a predators nature to prey. I think this could have been handled differently, maybe relocate the animal. Get guardian dogs, or put up a better system to scare off predators. Motion sensing lights or any other kind of technology. Talking from experience of owning a Farm in a foreign country where predators are much bigger!!! I still like your content just not the way this was handled.
I think you should invest in tranquilizer darts for animals cause i really think there has to be a better way of dealing with predators this was heart breaking 😢
Snow would short out the fence. I have the same fence. I try not to kill any predators, I live trap everything and drop them many many miles away. I have not caught a Bobcat, but I could not kill one.
@@whitehouseonthehill I would throw a heavy blanket over him, like the ones Harbor Freight sells and get the leg trap off his foot hopefully. Then put a cage over him in an attempt to be able to transport him. I use live traps, I have 400 laying hens in a very rural area, we have a local Bobcat, it is huge, thankfully he or she has never attacked our chickens. Don't miss understand, I understand what and why did what you did, I just prefer to try a different rout. I have transported more racoons and possums than I can remember. Owls were a problem until I got a couple big mean roosters, the owl has never been back. The Primer Electric fence has kept Fox, Coyote, and Bobcat out, even the coon and possum have learned the fence is nothing they want to try to cross. There was a learning curve of a good six months, but now even my live traps remain empty. I am guessing spring time will bring babies needing to be fed and the problem might return, so the live traps are set and baited. And I too would shoot a coyote, but Bobcats are very rare around my parts, Middle of Michigan's lower peninsula, and I just wouldn't feel right killing one.

I know that none of you wanted to kill any predators at all but, as a farmstead owner, you should also have the responsability to protect the wildlife around you, because, as you know, they were there way before your arrival. Yes, it sucks that they killed some of your flock, but then you should also see that they do that because they had nothing to eat. That said, there are plenty of ways to protect your flock: fencing, guardian dogs, better shelters, etc, and I do understand that you guys want to do that but can't right now, either because it is expensive or because guardian dogs would present a risk right now because you have small children, but that doesn't give you the right to shoot everything that kills your flock, because as I said, you had to protect your flock, not to kill everything that kills your flock jut because they were trying to survive

Cohabitation .. lack of respect when you are filming to slaughter that which you capture.. before you capture perhaps making plans on how to proceed to release and reestablish. I don’t think this is a solutuion to the problem. Other predators are not warned or anything and won’t stay away. Please get some guardian docks or something like that to keep the predators away instead of killing them.

Kinda sorry to say this but I'm appalled by the fact that you killed predators. It's your job to secure and predator-proof your animals. This video ends my year-long support of this channel.
What we did thats done very well but expensive, we used 7 ft tall grid fencing and install it 1 ft in the ground, I was planning on covering the top of the grazing area with netting but we haven’t had a problem yet. There’s easily 5-8 fox in the area and coyotes none have successfully got a chicken yet. Only downside is it’s not portable like your set up.
Coyotes, bobcats, fox and other predators didn't ask to be born and are just trying to survive like all creatures, including ourselves. I think getting some Livestock Guardian Dogs would be the most humane way to deal with the loss of your property. Mostly, those predators would just avoid your land.
I am surprised that US department of conservation do not assist in relocation of trapped wild animals, in Malaysia at least attempts are usually made except for wild boars(it's eaten).
they do assist when they have the capacity to do so, sadly, they have very little funding when dealing with these wild cats. so they have to turn down trapped or injured animals almost daily to help the ones they already have.

This is why farm dogs are so important if you have a farm. We don’t need to take a wild animals life and they are doing just what we are doing which is survival. I get it that it sucks when an animal gets killed by a wild predator but this is also what happens when we take away wild predators food as well.
I am afraid that you are not helping yourselves in the long run by interfering with the balance of predators/prey in your area. The answer is to use better protections for your animals (do you have a perimeter fence, for the farmyard if not the whole farm?).

Poor animals? They were hunting our birds. We had to slow down the predator pressure we were under. It has kept predators off of our property since then. Yes, it has helped.
Don’t kill the apex predators because y’all slipped and let the turkeys sleep out at night. The responsible thing to do is get large breed dogs. You can’t kill every animal in your region that is trying to feed it’s offspring, just because you raise poultry. Trapping is not an effective solution.

You could catch the fox alive with the two-section metal cage. The first section is the live chicken. The second section is the trigger system that closes the cage.
If you let peoples dogs come over to pee it really helped. I also collect dog and cat hair and hair from the hair dressers and barbers and alot of predator especially coyotes who respect other breeding couples territory can confuse and help them stay back if applied after Harvey storms or cleanings. A radio with batteries can be good for the birds and makes predators not know if humans or dogs inside. Motion detection with a dog park sound helps too.

But I also struggle with the wild life needing to be dealt with. I’m wondering if there is another way you all could win in this situation in the future? As someone who shoots foxes, you can tell come lambing season if they're not thinned out and breed out of control, they will kill way more lambs. When there's a lot of predators in an area it means less prey, that makes them hungry and brave to go into farms and kill livestock.
That would have been so scary. I appreciate the fact that this wasn't an easy thing for you to do. When you got the Australian Shepard, I though that was not the best dog for this situation. They are herders, not guardians. Really need a LGD, so many different breeds of those that would be better suited. For coyotes, you may want to get a donkey to wander the property.
She has helped, she lets us know when a coyote was near the house a few weeks ago. That's right before we started having all of the coyote issues and before the turkey/rooster attack. No she won't go out and fight them at night but she makes us aware if she sees something.
Guarantee over half these comments don't even have livestock. We were alarmed the other day by our flock and i ran out armed and a fox was taking off with one of our hens. I took a life to save one. Our hen came running back terrified and she has been doing great ever since. How is that wrong?

The predators also Carry many diseases that can wipe out a group of fowl. As food becomes more expensive in the stores more and more people will start getting chickens and turkeys.
We can have everything but swine where I am. I was told The only place that can have swine is town hall, as long as they stays in their cubical. Then of course DC has most in the country's swine... and on the local level, the capital buildings across the country.
I've seen a large Dog ripped to shreds by a coyote, over 1000 stitches, but survived. Bobcats are the opportunist like most cats. We have them all over where I live, north of Phoenix in cave creek AZ.
They not only kill farm animals but they kill pets. Lots of pets.
We have so many people who that move out to AZ without having any information on living with wildlife. we had, HAD, a large heard of deer on our Mt, black mountain. But every winter snowbirds would take out a few. They are gone now which leaves the 3 or 4 mountain lions in the area in search or other things to eat.
We have coyote and foxes of course but the Bobcats, Mt lions will walk right down the street where my home is. They are on our roof as well.

Dude. Sorry, but I just can't. I have had predators, including a pack of coyotes kill a herd of my goats. (They only ate the organs and left the rest to rot) But it makes no sense to me to kill animals that may not have been the culprit, away from the livestock yards in question.
In my opinion, those leg traps are cruel. You are luring predators/scavangers that aren't even in the pens that may be innocent and are guilty of nothing more than trying to scavenge a meal that is already dead.

I think a livestock dog is very necessary for farms. A lot of homestead with livestock and predator pressure has several dogs and even donkeys to help out. It broke my heart to see the bobcat trapped in the very hurtful device. I hope that you think about the possibility of guard animals instead of go with the traps.

@@SilentDarkAngel16 donkeys (and mules) are territorial and will chase predators away, they’ll even become aggressive and kick and stomp and bite if scare tactics don’t work. This applies to cougars, coyotes etc. Sounds weird because donkeys are cute and goofy, but it’s true.

I’ve had bobcats many times, even in broad daylight come and take my birds. Never would I trap them in such a fashion. I modified what I DID, and how I secured my animals. The onus is on us to,keep our animals safe NOT kill every predator possible. This made me sad and disappointed. That beautiful bobcat and fox.

I was also saddened by the loss of the wild animals; I was really hoping for a humane trap-and-release scenario. Disappointed about the painful snap-traps. Additionally, the area needs these predators to keep other nuisance critters at bay, like rabbit, snakes, gophers and the like; the overall health of their lands depends on a healthy wild ecosystem.

In France bobcats are extremely endangered. Last time I checked, there were only 7 left in the wild and not doing so good because shepherds were still killing them out of fear for their sheep. The fence is a good idea, but how expensive would that be? And how effective? Coyotes are undeterred by slatted fences, and chain link fences take a lot of prep work.

I love you guys and have followed you for years, but these traps are inhumane. Please buy an actual livestock guardian dog! Joey is a great herding dog but they aren’t guard dogs, ask any dog enthusiast and they’ll tell you herders, especially collies, aren’t meant to guard. It’s sad to see these animals suffer when it could’ve been prevented buy a dog. Again love you guys just need to speak up when something like this happens! How is it inhumane. both Canada and The US have strict and very regulated trapping, Heck there's even a division of law enforcement to for animal conservation. if traps where inhumane they wouldn't be legal simple as that. @@brennenmichel8855 there are strict laws that regulate and control over trapping to protect wildlife. They're not to protect people or livestock. They may have trapped and killed two animals that weren't involved in the killings of their livestock by baiting them, which is unethical and inhumane. I wouldn't consider dogs to be predators because they don't fit the niche of one. They're domesticated animals. Generally, there are particular livestock guardian breeds that do pursue predators, but most livestock guardian breeds stay and guard livestock. Studies have shown that livestock animals on farms are the most effective deterent for predators, even more than guns and fences. In my personal opinion, it is the farmer's responsibility to deter harmful wildlife interactions. They lost a rooster they weren't using for breeding, a female turkey that has no place to lay eggs in an all male poultry run, and a rare female duck that had potential for breeding purposes by a lake far from the farm. And in any case, the children are more likely to be attacked by their own farm animals than a wild one. I respect your disagreement but sadly nothing was solved in this video. The coyotes will be back, and even when those local coyotes are successfully trapped and killed, new ones will move in. Dogs will make it easier for you to train them. Their dog Joey is a herding dog, that doesn't herd. Her unused potential makes her not a good fit for the farm. Sadly, the cats serve more of a purpose than she does.

@brennen michel even if it means trapping and dispatching uninvolved animals? The camera trap caught only one coyote, and they ended up trapping and dispatching a fox and a bobcat. I mentioned the poultry killed because the farm is more for ornamental use than it is practical. They weren't being used for breeding purposes or meat production other than the duck. They aren't losing money from those losses. Livestock are replaceable. Wild animals aren't. Farmers don't have to use lethal means to protect their livestock. It's unsustainable and more work and more expensive than owning a livestock guardian dog.

You have to do what you have to do, it's you or them.
Once a wild animal finds an easy meal, they keep returning. Most of those animals, although intelligent, are also opportunistic. They will not just stop showing up. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions.
The biggest problem with traps is that you may not catch the actual culprit. Far better to make sure that your livestock is secure with good fencing and guard dogs are also a good idea. Sadly that bobcat and fox could have been totally innocent and have lost their lives for nothing

Predator proof your poultry with fully enclosed larger structures, boredom busters and multiple feeders /water would alleviate alot of the fighting among your birds and would give them a happier healthy and lifestyle
Predators will not disappear because you live in a remote area, even if you trap wild predators every day, you will still get caught, so it's sad.
It’s a daily challenge, we have a coyote, fox and raccoons that approach the farm animals nearly everyday. It’s a battle we’re working through.
I know it's a lot of work, and it costs a lot, but you should get more livestock Guardian dogs. Joey isn't going to scare away large predators.
@ThatOneSam also training an efficient herding dog is harder than training a guard dog. Yes the latter isn't easy either (creating a symbiosis between the dog and the birds etc), but herding dogs need to respond to certain types of commands to guide the animals a certain way, to make them all go through the same path etc. Guardian dogs don't need that kind of training, they're are needed to be taught how to respect the birds and protect their territory. Both those roles are way easier to teach a dog because certain breeds have "protect the land" code basically written in their DNA

If you trap or shoot the predators all you’re doing is making an opening for new ones to move in. It’s a never ending cycle. Joey is a good dog but she is not a livestock guard dog. I've seen vids and pictures of the remains of coyotes and foxes before that got caught by an LGD and trust me, the sight ain't pretty. Bloody mess would properly be the best way to describe it.

If you have one coyote, you have many. They multiply like crazy. We have them here in South Central IL., as well also Bobcats. We have goats and got two mini donkeys. No problems with coyotes or cats any longer. The donkeys will kill them if they get near any of our animals. They know that donkeys will kill them. Our neighbor a mile away had problems with coyotes getting their chickens and since we have gotten the donkeys, they have not had any trouble with coyotes either. We have had our donkeys for 6 years. We had a black lab when we got them and she knew instinctively to not go in the pasture from the day we brought them home. We love our mini donkeys.

Been here since 2019, and I know you guys have your animals safety in mind but trapping is not it. Please consider getting dogs or a donkey that will scare away predators. I know its a lot of work but it has to be better than killing animals who are only trying to survive.

As long as you take the time to train them properly they will scare things away, not kill them. I know you guys are capable of doing that, and I'm still looking forward to your content in the future.

I'm a firm believer in using herd dogs to protect flocks. Last year when my dog passed away a bobcat and some coyotes got to my chickens that I let free range on 40 acres, so I borrowed some of my neighbors dogs to run the property while my new Mcnab pup grow up a bit. Now shes running the property and the Bobcats and coyotes stay away. It's better than trapping and dispatching. The only thing my chickens have to worry about now or Eagles and Hawks but that's what my roosters are for.

I've been following your family's story for a few years now. I gotta say this one's been one of the heaviest on my heart. I fully understand why the fox and the bobcat were put to bed, but it still makes me so very sad and the traps used were too cruel. There are better options. You may also want to invest in a livestock guardian dog for your flocks. Tough, hearty dogs that can stand up to and scare off predators.
And if the predators manage to kill the guard dogs? They still at fault for not having the most advanced and humane equipment, yeah?

The fox and bobcat looked so sad in the trap. They are animals too and need to survive. When we had foxes kill our chickens we didn’t kill the foxes, but changed our fences and coop so they got locked in at night. And sometimes you still loose an animal. That is the consequence of living with predators. But we never killed them. I know its ‘normal’ in farming to do so, but its really not necessary. Just make it harder for them to get your animals than a wild rabbit and they will leave them alone.
That’s your choice. I wouldn’t tell anyone how to take care of their animals.

All that needs to happen, is for the dog in his "teenage years" (physically nearly fully grown, but mentally still a pup around the age of 1-2 years) to play to rough with one of the toddlers. It's about the dog having appropriate temperament and people being conscious of the dog. I know many farms who have livestock guardians and small children.

I would suggest setting up motion activated lights or floodlights. A predator would be startled by a bright light when in complete darkness
Have you thought about adding some donkeys to your homestead? They're lethal when it comes to predators. The downside is that they can be pretty mean with people too...they are also known to bond with people rather profoundly.
It would be cool to see your family homestead add them. If there's one thing about you guys, you're incredibly observant and share EVERYTHING you learn when you try new tactics and animals.

You have to re-thing the whole position of your farm and what you are teaching your children. Respect of wild life or the usual mentality that wild animals are the enemies of farmers. I am sorry to say that but here in rural France such video would have you banned from social médias with about a dozen law suit from wild live protection association. I understand that you want to protect your animals and that you were upset but your reaction was disproportionate. When a fox or a weasel killed my birds recently I blame myself for not having protected them properly. I didnt blame the fox that hunted easy prey. I live on his land and not him on my. Two Anatolian shepherds or two Great Pyrenees or two donkeys will deter the predators. Removing the predators from your farm just opens up the territory for other predators to move in. Trying to relocate predators doesn't work because you'll most likely be dropping them off in the territory that's already occupied.
Secure housing and fencing, solar motion lights, water scarecrows, and livestock guarding animals will hopefully reduce the predation.

You could try to use different types of urine crystals to scare predators away. The scent will keep them away from your animals if you spread it around the perimeter of your property. That way you both wouldn't need to dispatch animals or need to use those foothold traps. Wolf urine scares bobcats and coyotes away

We used it to scare off smaller animals like raccoons and opossums down here in Florida so I know it does work and the smell wasn't that strong to us. I know everyone is suggesting a livestock guardian dog and that's a long term solution for the future that you could think about as well. I know predators are a really big issue and it's frustrating that everyone reacts so strongly to when you need to take care of them for your animals safety, so I don't want to make it seem like it's the only option or even the best but it could be helpful even just to the addition to traps if you feel it's necessary. You should of course do whatever you feel is necessary to protect your animals!

Your farm is taking habitat of beautiful animals such as bobcats and foxes, which probably did NOT bother your livestock. You have the money to build a large aviary but not 2 buy guard dogs? In some states you can get guard dogs for FREE as rescues, especially when they're mixes such as Pyrenees and Anatolian shepherds.
Bobcats, especially, are leary of humans. You should've thrown a tarp over it and released it, NOT killing it.
It's even more sickening that you killed the bobcat and fox, and just let the bodies rot. At least harvesting the fur would've been halfway positive.
Glad you decided to cease trapping and, " dispatching," wild life in your area. I hope you'll rethink your cheapness about not getting guard dogsike ALL remote ranches with small stock generally do.

@@whitehouseonthehill would have helped if I were there. Grew up on a farm and volunteered at a state park rehab center. Never rescued a bobcat but dealt with raptors such as great horned owls and red railed haeks with nasty beaks and talons.
We had a bobcat which visited our barn a few times, likely when female cats were in heat as the bobcat never ate any of the cats (which bobcats can do).
Our feathered stock was all brought in at night. Or in permanent runs/ flight cages. Ducks had a floating platform on pond.
The only losses we had were some ducks to foxes. That was after the dogs passed away. Got new dogs and no more problems.

I definitely understand that once it's trapped, there really is no other way to get it out of the trap safely so it had to be "dispatched" but it's still sad. Not a farmer and while I’m not against killing because it is needed to some degree.. i don’t see how this will help keep the predators away. They will keep coming back and you will have to keep resetting traps and killing… it’s not like an infestation inside your home where once you clear it you’re good.. this is the wild- there’ll always be more.
i also agree with a livestock guardian. Creates a barrier/presence that will keep predators at bay. Or at the very least, get better housing for the livestock.
It has helped. We haven't seen another predator in a couple weeks. We were getting them every night for awhile.
Wild predators would be thieves if they had a conscience of the law. But since they don't, killing them for being what they are is not right. It's you who is an invader in their habitat, not the other way. It's your responsibility to protect your animals, but it's also your responsibility to do it without killing wildlife. Your livestock is yours to kill because it's you who gave them everything they need to live. But wild animals are just not yours to decide on their lives. It would be the same if you killed someone's dog. In their own yard.

Please don't set any more traps. You've moved into their area and are providing them with easy meals - there is no fault in those animals taking your birds. As long as your birds are lacking in proper protection, assorted predators will keep coming around for the easy meals.

@@whitehouseonthehill That's not what I said. As owners of animals, it is our duty to protect them, and there are many ways that can be done. I just don't feel that setting out a baited leg-hold trap that results in shooting the animal is the best way to go about it. You can continue to follow that route, collect a considerable pile of dead predators, but there will still always be more around to fill in the void. Everybody loves chickens. Assorted birds of prey, bobcats, foxes, coyotes, opossums, raccoons, weasels, minks, dogs...you can't kill them all off to make it safe for your chickens to be able to roam free. But you can build them a secure run, with hardware cloth and lumber. If you feel that that's being mean to your birds, then you have to suck up the losses to other animals doing what they are born to do - seek out easy prey. And if you find that going out each night to count heads is too much work for you - not your child - then maybe you should rethink the number of birds you have.
Believe it or not, I"m really not trying to be an a**hole here. I"ve lost birds to predators and it sucks every single time. But I try to learn from each instance where the gaps are and then fix them. Setting out bait for a trap, regardless of your plans once a predator finds that bait, is just going to attract more predators - it will never end. Keeping your birds securely out of a predators reach will eventually lead to the predator moving on to find food elsewhere.
Fences and facilities take time and lots of money. I can only work on a few projects at a time. With the predator pressure we were under, we had to act quickly. It took us a year to put up our front fence that went over a quarter mile. Yes, this is not our permanent solution to the problem.

Great Pyrenees are the best dogs for this. I have two and they tag team to keep the predators away. Saw them run off a raccoon in less than 3 minutes of it showing up on our cameras.

How do you know that’s not what they are already trying to do? Of course they want to finish their Avery as soon as a possible. But big projects are reliant on being able to get all the supplies you need as well as other factors. Maybe don’t judge too much from the outside looking in. Most farmers try the best they can do in the circumstances they are in, but it comes down to it, their flock and family comes first. As soon as they can finish the Avery things will be better.
I wrote my previous comment before watching the whole video. Upon watching the rest of the video I have to ask.. how many other animals besides the coyote you were after had to die to save your damn chickens? And, you didn't even bother to check the laws concerning trapping until AFTER having trapped two beautiful wild animals. Your chickens are NOT worth the lives of multiple other animals. Build a taller fence. Use humane live traps. Get a predator dog to keep them away. But STOP maiming and killing all manner of wild animals just for a few chickens.

Snow would short out the fence. I have the same fence. I try not to kill any predators, I live trap everything and drop them many many miles away. I have not caught a Bobcat, but I could not kill one.
What would you have done if you caught a bobcat? Think about it. It wasn't our plan, we were trying to catch the coyote.
@@whitehouseonthehill I would throw a heavy blanket over him, like the ones Harbor Freight sells and get the leg trap off his foot hopefully. Then put a cage over him in an attempt to be able to transport him. I use live traps, I have 400 laying hens in a very rural area, we have a local Bobcat, it is huge, thankfully he or she has never attacked our chickens. Don't miss understand, I understand what and why did what you did, I just prefer to try a different rout. I have transported more racoons and possums than I can remember. Owls were a problem until I got a couple big mean roosters, the owl has never been back. The Primer Electric fence has kept Fox, Coyote, and Bobcat out, even the coon and possum have learned the fence is nothing they want to try to cross. There was a learning curve of a good six months, but now even my live traps remain empty. I am guessing spring time will bring babies needing to be fed and the problem might return, so the live traps are set and baited. And I too would shoot a coyote, but Bobcats are very rare around my parts, Middle of Michigan's lower peninsula, and I just wouldn't feel right killing one.

I know that none of you wanted to kill any predators at all but, as a farmstead owner, you should also have the responsability to protect the wildlife around you, because, as you know, they were there way before your arrival. Yes, it sucks that they killed some of your flock, but then you should also see that they do that because they had nothing to eat. That said, there are plenty of ways to protect your flock: fencing, guardian dogs, better shelters, etc, and I do understand that you guys want to do that but can't right now, either because it is expensive or because guardian dogs would present a risk right now because you have small children, but that doesn't give you the right to shoot everything that kills your flock, because as I said, you had to protect your flock, not to kill everything that kills your flock jut because they were trying to survive

What we did thats done very well but expensive, we used 7 ft tall grid fencing and install it 1 ft in the ground, I was planning on covering the top of the grazing area with netting but we haven’t had a problem yet. There’s easily 5-8 fox in the area and coyotes none have successfully got a chicken yet. Only downside is it’s not portable like your set up.

I am surprised that US department of conservation do not assist in relocation of trapped wild animals, in Malaysia at least attempts are usually made except for wild boars(it's eaten).

This is why farm dogs are so important if you have a farm. We don’t need to take a wild animals life and they are doing just what we are doing which is survival. I get it that it sucks when an animal gets killed by a wild predator but this is also what happens when we take away wild predators food as well.
I am afraid that you are not helping yourselves in the long run by interfering with the balance of predators/prey in your area. The answer is to use better protections for your animals (do you have a perimeter fence, for the farmyard if not the whole farm?).

Don’t kill the apex predators because y’all slipped and let the turkeys sleep out at night. The responsible thing to do is get large breed dogs. You can’t kill every animal in your region that is trying to feed it’s offspring, just because you raise poultry. Trapping is not an effective solution.

Wow… unsubscribed. This is just cruel. This isn’t just your world. You set those traps far away from your animals. You don’t know if that animal was going to kill any of your birds. Do you know how many coyotes are around? You can’t just kill all of them. You also had to use the most inhumane traps. You were not even trying to save any of these animals. You knew you were going to probably get other animals in these traps. Disgusting.
You could catch the fox alive with the two-section metal cage. The first section is the live chicken. The second section is the trigger system that closes the cage.
If you let peoples dogs come over to pee it really helped. I also collect dog and cat hair and hair from the hair dressers and barbers and alot of predator especially coyotes who respect other breeding couples territory can confuse and help them stay back if applied after Harvey storms or cleanings. A radio with batteries can be good for the birds and makes predators not know if humans or dogs inside. Motion detection with a dog park sound helps too.

This seemed like a challenging position to be in. I imagine you feel a strong responsibility to protect your flock, which is good. But I also struggle with the wild life needing to be dealt with. I’m wondering if there is another way you all could win in this situation in the future?

I’m sure this situation is very unpleasant all ways around for your family to be forced to deal with. Anyways, I’m amazed by your channels transparency on the issues of homesteading. Especially when you become subjected to so much criticism from people who aren’t in your shoes, or maybe they are farmers but they assume as if you’re not already doing what you can with the circumstances you’re in.

And why do you involve your kids in seeing you killing a fox and a bobcat your showing them it's ok if they kill your animals but you don't show them that your in THEIR home
Heart breaking in so many ways. I am so sorry you had to go through this. The worst thing about the traps is that they were meant for coyotes but got other animals instead.
As if it would be any less heart breaking if you saw a coyote in the trap in these videos? You never know whats going to come up to your traps.

@@Aethuviel It's not a bi catch, it's predators on his land. Both capable of killing his livestock and would with any opportunity. They're on his land for a reason.
As someone who shoots foxes, you can tell come lambing season if they're not thinned out and breed out of control, they will kill way more lambs. When there's a lot of predators in an area it means less prey, that makes them hungry and brave to go into farms and kill livestock.

That would have been so scary. I appreciate the fact that this wasn't an easy thing for you to do. My mind would have also been racing with thoughts about my kids out after dark taking care of the evening chores or any of you for that matter. Not only have you protected your animals you've also protected yourselves.
When you got the Australian Shepard, I though that was not the best dog for this situation. They are herders, not guardians. Really need a LGD, so many different breeds of those that would be better suited. For coyotes, you may want to get a donkey to wander the property.
She has helped, she lets us know when a coyote was near the house a few weeks ago. That's right before we started having all of the coyote issues and before the turkey/rooster attack. No she won't go out and fight them at night but she makes us aware if she sees something.
