The scene where Steve Rogers retrieves the flag from the pole is a parallel to the "Gordian Knot". When Alexander the Great marched his army to the Kingdom of Gordium in Turkey. He found the gate to the Kingdom tied by a Gigantic Rope Knot. The policy was whoever untied the complicated knot would become ruler of Gordium without bloodshed. Alexander the Great was the only conqueror to come along and solve the puzzle. He drew his sword and sliced thru it. The Gordian Knot is an example of proving greatness by using the simplest solution, not brute force.

The fact that people can't tell which one is real and which is CGI is amazing. I heard when they first did the test footage and showed it to people, they said "wow, how did you make that skinny guy look so muscular." when, of course, it was actually the other way around (they made the muscular guy look skinny).
I loved that, because he doesn't maintain his buff physique when he isn't training for the role of Captain America, Chris Evans said "I have accepted the fact that I am a physical disappointment to my fans when they meet me."

Captain America was created during WWII, but before the US entered the war. His comics were used to support the war effort. So, it’s very apt to have his story start in WWII.

Nice reaction. To answer your question, Captain America's very first appearance was in 1941 with Timely Comics. It was all about this inspirational & patriotic hero in WW2. There were many red, white, and blue clad superheroes fighting against the N@zis but Captain America was the most popular at the time. Superhero popularity began to fade after WW2 and Captain America was retired in 1949. Timely Comics became Atlas comics in 1951. Atlas tried to revive superhero popularity and brought Cap back in 1953. It didn't work and Captain America was canceled in 1954. Atlas Comics evolved into Marvel Comics in 1961. Superhero popularity was on the rise again and Steve Rogers / Captain America was officially brought back in 1964.
Captain America was an actual WW2 comic that printed in the 1940’s. Came out a year before the war started and was very popular so it is expected to take place in WW2.

The fact that she can even pose the question of whether the actor was actually smaller to begin with just shows how well they sell the effect. It's not 100% perfect 100% of the time if you know to look for but, man, it's REALLY good. Especially since it's one of the earlier MCU entries.
I always forget that David Bradley is in it . He is most famous for his portrayal of Filch in the Harry Potter movies but he also did an amazing job portraying the late William Hartnell and his incarnation of the Doctor for Doctor Who and many, many other great appearances.
On another note, if you are wondering if Chris Evans was doing his pre super soldier shots you might want to check out Cellular (2004) because this is a great movie and if you had not missed it ou would not be wondering about Chris Evans body type.
In the scene where small Steve appears they had to record three times the same take: 1 time with Chris Evans, another with an actor with a small body, and another with nobody on the frame. In post-production they mashed them togetger🤧😋
Captain America was this new comic by Timely Comics created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. This upstart office assistant Stanley Lieber took an editorial job after one of the founders left. Captain America was Timely's answer to Action Comic's Superman. Both were used as American propaganda to combat against Nazi propaganda during WWII.
It doesn't really count as American propaganda when Captain America was punching Hitler in the face two weeks short of a full year before Pearl Harbor. Joe Simon and Jack Kirby were both Jewish (so was Stan lee, but he didn't contribute until the 3rd issue) and obviously had a very good reason to argue for America's intervention in the war, but the American public was apathetic at best.
You might consider the Agent Carter TV series that takes place in the years after the war. Lots more back story on Peggy and other characters like Howard Stark and the real Jarvis, but nothing to spoil the movies which all take place much later. Not necessarily for reactions but for your own enjoyment.
Mari, you getting to watch this over only several months is just as fun for us who watched them for 10 years. I read the comics for over 10 years from when I was about 9 to about 21 years old and I started reading them about 30 years ago. I'm glad you are enjoying the movies. I think they are great adaptations of the comics.

15:05 - The scene where Steve punches Hitler in the stage show is based on the cover of the first issue of the Captain America comic (March 1941). (Although most of the major Marvel characters were created in the 1960s and afterward, CA is an exception.) Later on when Marvel decided to revive the character (in 1964), that was when they decided he'd been frozen in ice for decades.
The buff Steve after the serum is the real actor (though obviously pumped up for the movie). The smaller version before the serum is a combination of very difficult computer effects combined with a body double named Leander Deeny. Also, the Captain America comic book was created in 1941 and eventually incorporated stories surrounding the war. Both children at home and soldiers in the war read these. It would have been a mistake *NOT* to set some part of this movie during WWII.
Well as an official old guy...I saw the 70's ABC TV movies (2 I think) with Reb Brown as Cpt America (bad) and I saw the unreleased (theatrically) 1990's Cpt America. I bought it as a legal VHS. (God awful). I was very excited that Marvel did as well as they did with Iron Man, Hulk and Thor...but as hard as those movies were...Cap is trickier. Unlike the others its not about SFX and powers (tho all movies need good writing) can you make Steve believable is the problem not Caps powers, and that need excellent writers. As much as you wish you knew a Steve in your life you likely don't if you are lucky you know 1 or 2 people who are close. So I was fairly worried, first trailer didnt help but the second trailer had the grenade scene with Col Philips and my wories started trending down. Was also psyched before that because Joe Johnston was the director and he did an excellent job capturing a similar era film with the Rocketeer. So I had both worry and hopes.
@@witchking8497 I believe you, but I couldn't speak to that, while I'm aware of Dr. Strange's origin, I've never actually seen it or read the actual issue before the film came out, so I didn't know what wrecked his hands. It's a bit like Bruce and Clark's origins they've been carved in to pop culture stone. I think my first experience with Strange was either his cameo in the Fox Spider-Man cartoon in the 90s or the Fantastic Four cartoon.
@@witchking8497 i knew that Cap would be the most difficult, how do you portrait a character that literally represents USA and let’s be honest, not all the world would buy it because of it, and also that it didn’t sound old, antique. But they went straight to his core values, what made him the hero, they made a great job writing him and Evan was perfectly cast. Truly one of the best characters in the MCU.
The body transformation was done with computers, the actor did the chicken/rice/broccoli training with Henry Cavill (the superman actor) and they build pc's 8 hours a day, lifting RTX 3090's!
The skinny Chris Evans thing still doesn’t cease to amaze me, I know how they did it, I’m just amazed at how well they pulled it off. It’s unbelievably convincing. To clarify, Chris Evans is tall/buff... they got a skinny, shorter actor to be a body-double for skinny Steve Rogers and then did a face replacement using cgi & special effects to superimpose Chris Evans head onto the other actor’s body.
I grew up reading a LOT of Marvel comic books and Captain America was my favorite. I also liked all the super hero team books Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men because they had so many more characters in them. When they found Cap's shield it's such an iconic moment, in the book it was the original Avengers that found him: Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man & the Wasp. Cap replaced Hulk who was always too wild to control.
You are much too young to catch it but the guy sitting next to Stan Lee is Reb Brown who played Captain America in a couple of movies from the 1970's. Reb is a B-Movie legend in part because of "Space Mutiny" which was made fun of in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode. Blast Hard Cheese forever!!!!!!

Those of us who read the Captain America comic book knew full well what his original story was. The movies contribution was weaving in Howard Stark, a character who hadn't yet existed when Captain America debuted in the 1940s. I'm still miffed that Caps uniform doesn't match the comic book art.

No, there was no hesitancy about the WW2/Marvel thing because that's where Captain American came from. His story, long before the movies, involved him beating up Nazis. It's the character 100%.

After this movie, Peggy Carter got her own 15-minute "One Shot" short film, called "Agent Carter," which you can find online; and later on she got her own tv-series, also called "Agent Carter," which ran for two seasons. Some plot lines of the tv series also intersected with the "Agents of SHIELD" tv series.

Mari, at the beginning of the movie, the US has just entered WW II. It's months after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Germany had declared war on the US. Most men of military age wanted to enlist in the military and fight the Axis countries. The rest of adults had to grow food, build weapons and supplies for the war effort, and to maintain civilian life as much as practical.
Ironically, a Disney movie and involving the inspiration of Iron Man. Stan took it as a challenge to make an eccentric industrialist into a super hero in the 60's.

Hi Mary, Here are two movies that I think you will REALLY enjoy: Amélie and Run Lola Run Maybe you have seen them already, they are movies that suit your taste. I'd really like to see you react to them.
When the movie came out there wasn't much controversy. WWII hero has always been a big part of who Cap is. And Marvel works hard to avoid making a bunch of similar movies. That would get stale and boring. So, making the last stand alone origin movie into a WWII flick is about perfect. Steve is a follow the rules type of guy - basically the opposite of Tony. They bookend Phase 1. The first comic was controversial. Created by two Jews from New York City - Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1939. The cover has Cap punching Hitler in the jaw - as seen in the USO show - lol. A lot of Americans didn't want to get involved, it sounded like an expensive way to get a lot of soldiers killed, might be better to stay neutral. The comics probably did change some minds. (and teenage Stan Lee got a job from his uncle, sweeping floors, filling inkwells and stuff for Joe and Jack.)
Stan was in the army in WWII. He mostly climbed poles in communications until he made playwright. He worked with Frank Capra, Chuck Addams, Ted Geisel pumping out propaganda. There were nine army playwrights I think.
The propaganda trying to get Americans to want to fight and die in wars on distant continents that don't concern us is always insane. They started ramping it up for the first world war. They pretty much perfected their techniques for the second, and it's been one war after another after another ever since.
Chris Evans is a really good actor. I remember when they announced they were making this movie and he was going to play Steve Rogers and I thought, "Him? This is going to suck," because I only knew him from the awful Fantastic Four movies where he plays Johnny Storm the Human Torch and from that "Not Another Teen Movie" spoof and he plays douches in both movies. In addition I don't really like the old fashioned Boy Scout superheroes, especially when they're really nationalistic, like older portrayals of Superman where he's a nerd who saves cats from trees, and though Superman has evolved and can be portrayed in other ways and make sense, this aspect is central to Captain America because he's meant to be this goody-goody person who fights on behalf of his country. But I have to say that Chris Evans did such a great job playing him here and in the whole MCU and selling who Steve Rogers is that I never found it lame or cringy and he's easily one of my favorite MCU characters. I've since seen him in many other movies and found out he's a good actor, and the two movies I'd seen originally are not a good sample of his work.
- I agree with most of your comment, although I really liked The Fantastic Four, I thought all the characters were well portrayed and good casting choices. I sure hope they don't replace them if they bring Fantastic Four into the MCU movie train. I feel the same way about Blade, i heard they will be introducing him into it as well, but if it isn't Wesley Snipes, it won't feel genuine, Wesley absolutely slayed that role.
Many of the superhero origins stem from the world wars Wonder woman, Captain America Iron Man (Tony stark was in Captain America with the hover car and the machine which created Cpt America)
I think that rather than there being issues with Marvel adding fantasy to the second world war, the bigger issue was Captain America being less relatable to the America of today. Since Cap originated in 1941 in comics, he has always been linked to those WW2 stories in even modern comics. But the trick for the movie was making the 'True Blue' or should I say red, white and blue hero, resonate with today, Captain America was supposed to be wholesome, honest and god-fearing and most peoples lives are far more jaded these days. So Marvel, instead of seeing Cap in a modern setting, had to establish him in the 1940's. Many fans actually disliked this because there are a ton of war movies and they wanted to get on that road to see the Avengers and heroes fighting in familiar times. So ironically it wasn't the depiction of WW2 that cause annoyance because of the conflict. Personally I think they wasted the Red Skull a little, as he was always Captain America nemesis, but apparently the actor wasn't in love with playing the character and would not have returned for a second outing anyway, but I actually think he did a wonderful job in the role. While this isn't my favourite of the the Marvel origin stories on film, it was a pretty good move in my opinion.

I always forget that David Bradley is in it . He is most famous for his portrayal of Filch in the Harry Potter movies but he also did an amazing job portraying the late William Hartnell and his incarnation of the Doctor for Doctor Who and many, many other great appearances.
On another note, if you are wondering if Chris Evans was doing his pre super soldier shots you might want to check out Cellular (2004) because this is a great movie and if you had not missed it ou would not be wondering about Chris Evans body type.
19:40 Technically it was not a flash forward. Most of the movie is a flash back and that scene in the beginning was present day.
In retrospect I think this was one of the heaviest lifts the MCU had, and they pretty much nailed it.

In the scene where small Steve appears they had to record three times the same take: 1 time with Chris Evans, another with an actor with a small body, and another with nobody on the frame. In post-production they mashed them togetger🤧😋
Captain America was this new comic by Timely Comics created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. This upstart office assistant Stanley Lieber took an editorial job after one of the founders left. Captain America was Timely's answer to Action Comic's Superman. Both were used as American propaganda to combat against Nazi propaganda during WWII.
It doesn't really count as American propaganda when Captain America was punching Hitler in the face two weeks short of a full year before Pearl Harbor. Joe Simon and Jack Kirby were both Jewish (so was Stan lee, but he didn't contribute until the 3rd issue) and obviously had a very good reason to argue for America's intervention in the war, but the American public was apathetic at best.
You might consider the Agent Carter TV series that takes place in the years after the war. Lots more back story on Peggy and other characters like Howard Stark and the real Jarvis, but nothing to spoil the movies which all take place much later. Not necessarily for reactions but for your own enjoyment.

Mari, you getting to watch this over only several months is just as fun for us who watched them for 10 years. I read the comics for over 10 years from when I was about 9 to about 21 years old and I started reading them about 30 years ago. I'm glad you are enjoying the movies. I think they are great adaptations of the comics.

15:05 - The scene where Steve punches Hitler in the stage show is based on the cover of the first issue of the Captain America comic (March 1941). (Although most of the major Marvel characters were created in the 1960s and afterward, CA is an exception.) Later on when Marvel decided to revive the character (in 1964), that was when they decided he'd been frozen in ice for decades.
I watched this film for the first time the other day. I absolutely love it.
The buff Steve after the serum is the real actor (though obviously pumped up for the movie).
The smaller version before the serum is a combination of very difficult computer effects combined with a body double named Leander Deeny.
Also, the Captain America comic book was created in 1941 and eventually incorporated stories surrounding the war. Both children at home and soldiers in the war read these. It would have been a mistake *NOT* to set some part of this movie during WWII.

Well as an official old guy...I saw the 70's ABC TV movies (2 I think) with Reb Brown as Cpt America (bad) and I saw the unreleased (theatrically) 1990's Cpt America. I bought it as a legal VHS. (God awful). I was very excited that Marvel did as well as they did with Iron Man, Hulk and Thor...but as hard as those movies were...Cap is trickier. Unlike the others its not about SFX and powers (tho all movies need good writing) can you make Steve believable is the problem not Caps powers, and that need excellent writers. As much as you wish you knew a Steve in your life you likely don't if you are lucky you know 1 or 2 people who are close. So I was fairly worried, first trailer didnt help but the second trailer had the grenade scene with Col Philips and my wories started trending down. Was also psyched before that because Joe Johnston was the director and he did an excellent job capturing a similar era film with the Rocketeer. So I had both worry and hopes.
This film and Iron Man are probably the most accurate comic origin stories in letter and spirit. They're really impressive adaptations.

@@witchking8497 I believe you, but I couldn't speak to that, while I'm aware of Dr. Strange's origin, I've never actually seen it or read the actual issue before the film came out, so I didn't know what wrecked his hands. It's a bit like Bruce and Clark's origins they've been carved in to pop culture stone. I think my first experience with Strange was either his cameo in the Fox Spider-Man cartoon in the 90s or the Fantastic Four cartoon.
@@witchking8497 i knew that Cap would be the most difficult, how do you portrait a character that literally represents USA and let’s be honest, not all the world would buy it because of it, and also that it didn’t sound old, antique. But they went straight to his core values, what made him the hero, they made a great job writing him and Evan was perfectly cast. Truly one of the best characters in the MCU.
The body transformation was done with computers, the actor did the chicken/rice/broccoli training with Henry Cavill (the superman actor) and they build pc's 8 hours a day, lifting RTX 3090's!
The skinny Chris Evans thing still doesn’t cease to amaze me, I know how they did it, I’m just amazed at how well they pulled it off. It’s unbelievably convincing. To clarify, Chris Evans is tall/buff... they got a skinny, shorter actor to be a body-double for skinny Steve Rogers and then did a face replacement using cgi & special effects to superimpose Chris Evans head onto the other actor’s body.
We get to relive the excitement we felt when this was new and no one had seen The Avengers yet. What a feeling!

I grew up reading a LOT of Marvel comic books and Captain America was my favorite. I also liked all the super hero team books Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men because they had so many more characters in them. When they found Cap's shield it's such an iconic moment, in the book it was the original Avengers that found him: Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man & the Wasp. Cap replaced Hulk who was always too wild to control.
You are much too young to catch it but the guy sitting next to Stan Lee is Reb Brown who played Captain America in a couple of movies from the 1970's.
Reb is a B-Movie legend in part because of "Space Mutiny" which was made fun of in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode.

Those of us who read the Captain America comic book knew full well what his original story was. The movies contribution was weaving in Howard Stark, a character who hadn't yet existed when Captain America debuted in the 1940s.
I'm still miffed that Caps uniform doesn't match the comic book art.

There was no concern with mixing WW2 with Fantasy because that was Captain America Orgin in the Comics he first appeared in the comics in 1941

No, there was no hesitancy about the WW2/Marvel thing because that's where Captain American came from. His story, long before the movies, involved him beating up Nazis. It's the character 100%.
....and in classic comic book Cap history, Johann Schmidt was a protege Hitler picked so he could indoctrinate Schmidt with Nazi ideology and use him as an example to those not "living up" to the standard expected by the Fuhrer.

After they used him successfully for war propaganda to get us into WW2, they needed to bring him back for the Cold War and all the various proxy wars after that. Surprised they didn't bring him out sooner for GWOT.

Mari, at the beginning of the movie, the US has just entered WW II. It's months after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Germany had declared war on the US.
Most men of military age wanted to enlist in the military and fight the Axis countries.
The rest of adults had to grow food, build weapons and supplies for the war effort, and to maintain civilian life as much as practical.

Also check out "The Rocketeer". It's another WWII retro superhero movie (not a Marvel movie) by the same director as this one.
Ironically, a Disney movie and involving the inspiration of Iron Man. Stan took it as a challenge to make an eccentric industrialist into a super hero in the 60's.

When the movie came out there wasn't much controversy. WWII hero has always been a big part of who Cap is. And Marvel works hard to avoid making a bunch of similar movies. That would get stale and boring. So, making the last stand alone origin movie into a WWII flick is about perfect. Steve is a follow the rules type of guy - basically the opposite of Tony. They bookend Phase 1.
The first comic was controversial. Created by two Jews from New York City - Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1939. The cover has Cap punching Hitler in the jaw - as seen in the USO show - lol. A lot of Americans didn't want to get involved, it sounded like an expensive way to get a lot of soldiers killed, might be better to stay neutral. The comics probably did change some minds.
(and teenage Stan Lee got a job from his uncle, sweeping floors, filling inkwells and stuff for Joe and Jack.)
Stan was in the army in WWII. He mostly climbed poles in communications until he made playwright. He worked with Frank Capra, Chuck Addams, Ted Geisel pumping out propaganda. There were nine army playwrights I think.
The propaganda trying to get Americans to want to fight and die in wars on distant continents that don't concern us is always insane. They started ramping it up for the first world war. They pretty much perfected their techniques for the second, and it's been one war after another after another ever since.

Chris Evans is a really good actor. I remember when they announced they were making this movie and he was going to play Steve Rogers and I thought, "Him? This is going to suck," because I only knew him from the awful Fantastic Four movies where he plays Johnny Storm the Human Torch and from that "Not Another Teen Movie" spoof and he plays douches in both movies. In addition I don't really like the old fashioned Boy Scout superheroes, especially when they're really nationalistic, like older portrayals of Superman where he's a nerd who saves cats from trees, and though Superman has evolved and can be portrayed in other ways and make sense, this aspect is central to Captain America because he's meant to be this goody-goody person who fights on behalf of his country. But I have to say that Chris Evans did such a great job playing him here and in the whole MCU and selling who Steve Rogers is that I never found it lame or cringy and he's easily one of my favorite MCU characters. I've since seen him in many other movies and found out he's a good actor, and the two movies I'd seen originally are not a good sample of his work.
- I agree with most of your comment, although I really liked The Fantastic Four, I thought all the characters were well portrayed and good casting choices. I sure hope they don't replace them if they bring Fantastic Four into the MCU movie train. I feel the same way about Blade, i heard they will be introducing him into it as well, but if it isn't Wesley Snipes, it won't feel genuine, Wesley absolutely slayed that role.

I think that rather than there being issues with Marvel adding fantasy to the second world war, the bigger issue was Captain America being less relatable to the America of today. Since Cap originated in 1941 in comics, he has always been linked to those WW2 stories in even modern comics. But the trick for the movie was making the 'True Blue' or should I say red, white and blue hero, resonate with today, Captain America was supposed to be wholesome, honest and god-fearing and most peoples lives are far more jaded these days. So Marvel, instead of seeing Cap in a modern setting, had to establish him in the 1940's. Many fans actually disliked this because there are a ton of war movies and they wanted to get on that road to see the Avengers and heroes fighting in familiar times. So ironically it wasn't the depiction of WW2 that cause annoyance because of the conflict.
Personally I think they wasted the Red Skull a little, as he was always Captain America nemesis, but apparently the actor wasn't in love with playing the character and would not have returned for a second outing anyway, but I actually think he did a wonderful job in the role. While this isn't my favourite of the the Marvel origin stories on film, it was a pretty good move in my opinion.
