  • The Captain scores a Jim Anderson-built, mid-80s Shark Cat with a pair of Suzuki DF200 V6 outboards. This classic workhorse has a few surprises, but is she worth $40K?

    I used to be a "glassy" hand laying GRP boats. Did a range of 33 foot and 16 footers. No mask, no gloves, thongs on feet was about as far as safety went. Back then it was chopped stand mat x 2, then woven rovings and more chopped, all with hand sanding between the layups as the resin was waxed and had to be sanded before next layer. The air was thick with fibreglass dust. The joys of 80's GRP boat building....

      How many layers, what boats and why not wet on wet? Jurious not being a 💩

      @@NHL4740 From memory... (38+ years ago) on the 33 footers. Bear in mind we used rolls of GRP (Fibreglass) we did not use chopper guns. So - Clean mold, wax mold, spray gelcoat. when gelcoat dry cut suitable lengths off the roll and lay 4oz or 6oz cloth, CSM (chopped strand mat) after it goes off, light sand, then lay 8 oz cloth csm, then sand when dry, then lay woven rovings (forget what weight), light sand when dry and then a layer of either 10 or 12? oz csm cloth. Areas like keel/engine bearers got a slightly different layup. We stood inside the hulls to lay the Fglass so we used waxed resin, as its waxed it has to be sanded off otherwise the next layer resin/glass mix wont adhere as well. I remember eating my lunch with the added goodness of crunchy fibreglass dust! There are still a few boats for sale that I helped build for sale they pop up every now and again. "All Seasons" was one of the brands we built. We did a lot of hulls only, ie ready to fit out as hull/deck/flybridge was all done so the owner fitted it out to how they liked.Single or twin screw hulls, the owner decided. All boats were hand laid/hand rolled/with Fglass cloth cut from rolls.

      Obviously great in the sense of maintenance costs are instantly half, lower fuel burn and much better rear access to the water. Would be interesting to see the process of one of these Aussie hulls to be converted and maybe it's been done, or attempted and blew up in their face lol

    • @gypana
      @gypana ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Single engine on this cat would make it ride like a pig although that concept does exist with other manufactures, It's only really to help bring the cost down and more in line with the mono hulls.... the fundamentals of a cat is to be able to trim each engine to suit the condition and once properly learnt you can just about run wide open throttle in anything other than a head sea.

    • @Crabman_87
      @Crabman_87 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gypana I never realised trimming the outboards differently is a thing haha. Always wondered how the Blackdog cats rode like, I figured all the US spec single outboard centre consoles ride much better being +30ft though centre console styled narrow beam for the length.

    Most of us pay way too much for our boats then get paid way too little when we sell them years later.
