Yery easy instructions and demonstration for stenciling using fabric paint and a pre-made plastic stencil. I looked high and low for a simple explanation, but for the most part, the instructions and demos were partial information. Thank you so much!
Thanks for this. I totally mesded up my fabric tryin to stencil yesterday. I needed that type of brush and the spray wouldve been great. Very good vid.
Thanks, great video. Ive recently been messing around with sublimation & transfer paper on tshirts and looking to expand my creativity and this would be a great thing for me to try
I'm trying to figure out what adhesive to use that doesn't leave a residue on the fabric when I'm done. I've tried Aleene's tacky spray all-purpose adhesive and 3M's general purpose spray adhesive and they both left residue on the fabric that did not come out with washing. Any advice?
If you are not painting fabric, then you don’t need fabric paint and you can use acrylic paint. If you are painting, T-shirts or fabric material that will be washed, you must use fabric paint.
Is the adhesive really necessary, or just helpful? I want to stencil a t shirt to wear at home, but I am not sure as o whether it woud be worth buying it or not.
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING A SPRAY ADHESIVE. Take it from someone who has irreparably jacked up MANY a stenciling project - when you are stenciling on fabrics, SPRAY ADHESIVE IS CRITICAL to a crisp, flawless result!!! XX
Acrylic paint will wash away. Art supply stores sell a fabric medium that you can mix with acrylics to make the paint become a fabric paint or you otherwise would have to buy fabric paint. Hope that helps!
Thank you for the video, it was very helpful. I've tried using tape in the past and the paint went under my stencil and made a mess. Any suggestions or insight as to what I might have done wrong? Thanks again!
Anita S. No, you have to let it dry 1-2 minutes before you place it on the shirt and it is helpful to place it on another piece of fabric before you place it on the shirt to remove a little of the glue. Make sure to use low tack repositionable spray. Hope that helps!
Great work. I have a few questions about this technique. 1. How many times can the stencils be reused? 2. Does the paint come through on the underside of the t-shirt? I actually saw this happen in another youtube video. 3. Is the artwork as durable as screen printing?
anzaeria The Stencil1 stencils are mylar, they are washable and reusable, years of use of you use water based paint and wash them as soon as you finish painting. The paint does sometimes soak through so you have to insert cardboard when painting. The fabric paint is softer than silkscreen paint but lasts for years - you must heat seal the design.
It may be too thin of paint but if you use very little paint it shouldn’t go everywhere. Only too much paint can go everywhere. Practice and you’ll get it!
- How do I stencil a black t-shirt with white fabric paint, so the white paint is opaque? (I was told that stenciling on black fabric with white paint wouldn't give a good result because the paint wouldn't be opaque on the shirt) - From your video, you don't apply layers of paint, you just do it all in one go, right? I tend to add a lot of paint because I want my designs to turn out opaque (but I know that's poor technique, because the paint takes longer to dry and it's soaked by the t-shirt, so you can see it from the other side; now I'm talking about black paint on white or light fabrics). I do my stencils with a sponge. - Finally, my crafts store in Europe told me they don't sell spray adhesive for fabric, but they said I could use some spray adhesive for paper: They said I should spray it on the stencil, let it dry, and once dry, place the stencil on the shirt (it would have just the right amount of "glueing power" without making a mess and getting stuck on the fabric). Should I buy that spray and do as they say or stick to regular paper tape? Now that I'm checking the name of the spray they said they have, it might be the same as yours, because they said it's called Spray Mount Repositionable! Is that it? :) Thanks a lot for your advice!
It’s a great question so you first have to buy really quality fabric paint that says opaque and not transparent or semi transparent and you also have to build up lightly at least three layers and dry them in between with some sort of hairdryer. Then the white will show on black and if you are for example painting yellow on a black shirt you can paint multiple layers of that yellow or you can paint one layer of way and then a few layers of yellow. I hope that helps
Regarding the spray adhesive you can use what is called low tack Spray adhesive and yes it’s typically made for paper but you just have to make sure it says repositionable.
YOU CAN BUY BLANK T SHIRTS CHEAP FROM CANADIAN DOLLARAMA STORE.ALSO WHEN THE "STENCIL1" PLACED THE T SHIRT ON THE BOX HE NEGLECTED TO MEASURE THE PLACMENT OF THE STENCIL FROM THE EDGES OF THE T SHIRT AND FROM THE TOP OF THE T SHIRT.IF ONE DOESN'T DO THESE MEASUREMENTS IN ADVANCE ONE'S STENCIL CAN COME OUT LOPSIDED ON THE T SHIRT.
Measuring where to place the stencil is a 'no brainer'. Of course he measured before placing it on the cardboard, he just didn't go through that step. Duh!
Thank you, Ed. I have watched several videos about stenciling a t-shirt. This was the most informative in the least amount of time... very concise. 😊
Glad it was helpful!

Yes, probably but don’t get discouraged! It just requires so little paint!
