    People like the dive knife because it's easy access. You never have to search for it. I wish there was an external mount knife that would cut like the ones you are reviewing. Thanks again for the review.

    Byrd Is by far and away best value of any knife for our purposes. It is Spyderco's knock off of their own Gold standard. I use an Atlantic salt when sailing, just because the shackle key is useful. I haven't found any difference in the way they cut. When rope is under tension either one will go through any rope in less than one pass. How amazing is this knife? When you find yourself at a dirt road takeout 20+ miles from pavement, and there is a CLUB on the shuttle car steering wheel, AND your buddy somehow left that key at takeout? You will find it saws though a steering wheel in under 2min. From Experience You can cut a whole raft floor out in about the same time. Clean line principle, I prefer to have one of these tucked away in a PFD pocket. I use the extra mili-secound it takes pulling it out to check myself about the great power I am about to weild.

    Hi Zack. I just bought a Salt Saver knife. It's just like the Salt, but an inch shorter, seems like a nicer size in a pfd. I like it! Under $100

      The Salt Saver looks awesome. Spyderco has so many awesome river knives.

    I’m a first responder and have recommended the Byrd knives to new people for their EDC knife if they can’t afford a new Sypdie or Benchmade. The Japanese version will stay sharper longer, and the steel they use is highly corrosion resistant. Where do you carry these folders? I’ve carried fixed blades on my vest in a sheath, but have always wondered if people stow these in a pocket or something. I share the concerns of frozen fingers, pinned in moving wAter, etc., that a folder might not be the best. Spyderco makes a few fixed blade rescue knives, but only a few options if you like a blunt tip.

      I store my folder in the center pocket on my PFD and can get to it with either hand quickly. One of the issues with externally mounted knives is that some of them can only be reached with one hand because of where they are mounted.

      If you want a higher quality knife then go with the more expensive Spyderco version

    Need to cut a lot of ropes on fishing boat but not sure if the byrd doesn't rust too much in real salty enviroment? Have any rust on it already?

    Still not sold on a folding knife, someday that extra 1 second and extra movements may be the deciding factor.

    The Japanese spyderco will probably hold that sharp edge on the serrations far longer than the Chinese one. The extra 100 bucks is buying you much higher quality steel.

    • @GearGarageTV
      @GearGarageTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! I don't think most people can stomach the price of the Japanese steel.

      Nothing some sharpening won't take care of after you use it in an emergency. It shouldn't be a knife that should be getting dull due to daily use.

    What about trauma shears?

    • @GearGarageTV
      @GearGarageTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some trauma shears are amazing at cutting rope. I think they may be a viable replacement for a river knife.
