I feel like Guillermo Del Toro would love this experience. You can tell he loves the job and the process and also embraces both traditional and modern VFX.
When the notification popped up on my screen, my first thought was to get Guillermo on the couch. I haven't watched a lot of his stuff but the things that I have seen were absolutely brilliant and the way he talks about movies and filmmaking in general, with the passion in his eyes and voice, he'd love to talk about his work on Corridor.
It's so cool to see insights into film production, and extra fun because I happened to be an extra for The Green Knight for a day (which is wild, I lived in Ireland for under a year). It's a whole different perspective. Me and the other extras got to the location early at morning, went into the costumes, had breakfast, got makeup and waited a while, then we went to the exact spot where the scene would be shot, waited for a while longer, had lunch, waited a bit more (the crew were filming a scene with Dev Patel at the woods there) and only at afternoon we all got laid onto the mud (most of us were corpses for that big post-battle scene with Barry Keoghan). It was a peaceful death. I even managed to recognize myself in the final shot, which is pretty awesome.
The neat thing is that with directors we get more personal, artistic and often abstract insights. I do wish Lowery would’ve talked about “A Ghost Story”, I adore that movie.
Even if Peter Pan & Wendy had a middling reception, it's nice seeing that Lowery still had a lot of passion for the film, and it's easily noticeable when he talks about it.
middling's an understatement lmfao just checked on rotten tomatoes (which to be fair isn't the *best* platform, but good enough for a general guage) critics: 64% audience: 11% that's so far below "middling" I'd even call it abysmal honestly though the only real problem was the writing, everything else was fine. but when the writing is *so* bad, it can bring the whole movie down rather easily, no matter how good everything else is.
This is a different format than VFX Artists and Stuntmen etc. react, and I love it! Rather than concentrate on specific effects, we see the overall thought process for a scene (and the whole movie). Keep it on!
Yes, it adds another 'behind the scenes' component to the thought and work that goes into making a scene. Great directors have that mix of collaborative flexibility and vision to see how things will come together even when people feel like an 'idiot' shooting a scene a certain way. It's fantastic to hear from an learn about how they make they realize a scene.
Loved every second of this, please do more! Since the loss of dvd/home video special features, you guys really bring that insight into the process in such a way that goes beyond what a studio mandated bts is and this new series really takes it to another level! Please more!
The Green Knight was probably the last time i felt like i had a profound experience in a movie theater, certainly didn't expect to see David Lowery on the couch, well done!

The movie is directly based off of the poem of the Arthurian legend, and you can really feel that through the movie, the sense of ancient, legendary mythology. It was a profound experience for me too, because it wasn't hollywood-ified much at all. It really felt like the epic stories that parents might have told to their kids at bedtime 500 or so years ago, brought to life
The turn of the seasons compared to one man's life. One life, and then you WILL die. The loss of the protection of your family and standing alone. The way a single decision taken rashly in your youth can mark your entire life. The way wise people do not explain things to idiots. All of that.
Awesome seeing the scope of the series expand, and seeing Nick on the couch, the dude has a wealth of passion and knowledge and it's awesome he gets his turn to shine
Edgar Wright would be great! He’s developed such a unique visual style and has done so many great films. The editing and storyboarding for his shots alone is worth discussing.

I’m so happy they got David Lowery on the show, he’s one of my favourite contemporary directors! Just wish they’d chatted about A Ghost Story, that film is in my top 5 of all time!
It's absolutely incredible and it does have a lot of very good subtle cinematography, but I think it's a little less flashy than the movies they went with

This video is now one of my top, all time favorite, videos of the whole React series. Listening to a director's description of what's going on during the filming process is just...excellent! In other words, YES! Please do more Directors React!
The Redford mask reminds me of one of the Columbo movies in which the killer established an alibi by having an accomplice get photographed by a traffic camera while wearing a life-size photo of his face as a mask.
Just file everything under "Filmmakers React" cause any aspect you tackle (sound editing, lighting, set design, blocking, etc) with an expert in that area will be amazing to watch.
The Green Knight will forever hold a special place for me. Not only is it a masterclass in film making that I was in awe of the entire time, when it came to theaters in 2021, it was the first quality theatrical experience I had since the pandemic closed theaters. Sitting down in a dark theater with that giant screen, seeing the lights go down and then instantly getting transported away to Lowery's amazing vision was an emotional experience. But even without that anecdote, The Green Knight is an absolute must watch.

"Disney director" in not really a high standard these days considering all of the mediocre or straight up bad stuff they've released in the past few years, one of it being Peter Pan and Wendy which this guy directed. He looks like a cool dude on a personal level which is nice and all, but movie wise is plain mediocre considering the average score of his movies as a director is like 6-ish and the definition of "we'll fix it in post". I wouldn't say it's a banger start.
@@alkaya1907 I don't know if you've been here from the start, but the VFX / Animators react channel started from small beginnings, and certainly never had access to the talent they regularly include nowadays. So if this is their first guest, give it 100+ episodes like they've had with their other series have and they'll be on the couch with some of the greatest directors working just like they currently do with the quality of talent in the stuntmen/vfx/animators react videos. I do take your point, but maybe you missed mine. I don't expect you to have watched since then, but you'd know if you had that if they can get this talent on their first episode they're going to have much bigger ones on the horizon.
@@walterroux291 Yes I have been here for many years even before the VFX reacts and I'm not sure what does this have to do with anything. I never said in my comment there is need to be some big Hollywood name director on the show and I think you misunderstood mine because my intent was not for them to get huge Hollywood names, but to get people who made good films even if they're smaller/indie directors working on smaller projects. It doesn't need to be a huge studio production to create a good movie and that's why I said that Disney director is not really a high standard, because even as a big studio they don't really inspire high quality product or art these days because for them everything is about the formula and not the art.

I'm very happy to see the director perspective. its a very different animal from VFX and stunts and I think this will be my favorite version of this show. You're also helping your audience with film literacy!
Although I love Petter Pan & Wendy for making Disney lose money a little bit faster, I also appreciate the effort put into it (except for the writing part). And this is also something I love about this series. Some movies may be bad, but you can still appreciate parts of it, be it vfx, stunts, etc.
I really didn't enjoy the Green Knight when I saw it in theaters, but I appreciate what went into the direction & choices made a lot more now. And yes, I knew what kind of movie I was getting into when I first watched it. People always suggest "you probably thought it would be an action/fantasy film right?" but no... Still, I really enjoyed this episode & David's insight. Can't wait to see more Directors React!

Would be curious what the original poster didn't like at first. I loved The Green Knight because so much of Hollywood takes superheros/war absurdly seriously now, and it was a heartfelt movie about someone not only *bad* at being a hero but also questioning whether that's a good thing to do with your life. The whole conflict isn't "defeat the bad guy", it's "why is this better than staying home with my community?". I don't think that's too deep for people, everybody would have understood it as a comedy (Clerks!), but maybe some got thrown off by expecting a more regular plot, or thinking there's some bigger puzzle than the character's own emotions.
Love it so darn much. David Lowery is already one of my favourite modern filmmakers, so glad you opened the series with him, can't wait for every next chapters of his, and for the next great video of yours. so good
I LOVE the new react series. Having director POV on film making along with Stunt/VFX is amazing all the different perspectives and reasonings behind the decisions they make in a film. David Lowery is so cool to have as the first also very down to earth and humble feeling through out the video.
Got to feel sorry for him having Peter Pan and Wendy in his portfolio. The script/writing was absolutely terrible and to have to create that visually must have been a true burden. His other films have been entertaining but PP&W was an absolute shambles and it's straight to streaming finale summed up that the studio had no confidence in it.
Ohh man what a great idea to bring directors onto this series, what an awesome way to keep things fresh! Can't wait for many more of these episodes, I already know I'll be learning so much about filmmaking, which I'll then be able to apply to my own short films! Keep up the great work :)
How do we compliment other version? By making a version so shit it went straight to streaming and people still hate it and destroy it across the internet.
Something I have learned over the past few years from this is A24 is one of the coolest studios(?) in the industry for taking little known talent and helping them make it big. I would honestly love to have someone in charge of A24 on the couch and learning how they find these people.
David Lowery is a real great director. The Green Knight is such an awesome film and Peter Pan & Wendy has such style. Can't wait to see what he does with his episode of StarWars early next year!
@@owyx8608Don’t think I’ll watch Peter Pan & Wendy, but the Green Knight is one of the best movies I’ve seen in years. Really surprising how well done it was. Loved the non-linearity of it. Obviously the aesthetics and the VFX were amazing, but what really got me was how he retold the coming of she, “becoming a man/adult” story, in such a brilliant fashion. You could really feel the fear and shame the character felt. Especially in the scene where he is tempted by the Nobel man’s wife and “prematurely jumps the gun”, and the secondhand embarrassment you feel for the character is so real. So…I get if it’s not someone’s cup of tea, but to say it’s not a really well done movie, is flat out insulting.
It’s also insanely different to the original completely losing the morality of the story. If you give a shit about the original legend this movie absolute dog crap. Just like Peter Pan and Wendy.
@randomvideoboy1 I watched the movie having no idea about the original poem source material or anything else about the context of the movie. If you go into a movie expecting to take everything literally, or have everything spelled out for you, you're definitely limiting the number of movies you can enjoy. Maybe that sounds pretentious, but it's not hard to be more open minded. I'm not pretending like I understood everything on my first watch, but leaving some plot points up to interpretation really got me to think more about the movie and made me want to revisit it. Let alone that it's beautifully shot. People have different tastes in movies, and the great thing is that there are plenty, plenty of movies for you that are faster paced and tell you exactly what happens with no room for ambiguity.
This brings us one step closer to the the Corridor Digital school of film. As someone that has never had anything to do with film making all of these series have given me an appreciation for the work and thought that goes into the process. I sincerely hope that these videos inspire new filmmakers.

You've spoken with the stuntmen and women who make our hearts jump. You've spoken with the VFX coordinators and specialists who help make a scene or movie pop. This is a terrific spin on talking to the person who brought it all together with his (or her, hopefully) vision of what the movie could / should be. This is what getting an in-depth and insightful look into filmmaking should be. Geep up the amazing work, guys!!
I wasn't really paying much attention to the cinematography because I was too busy cringing continuously during that movie, but he seems like a cool guy and I'd be interested to see what he can do when given a move that's not pure poison.

Your "dramactially decreased" viewership claim is just conservative fan fiction I guess, I have no idea where that comes from.

The RT score refers to the percentage of the audience that thought the movie was good eniugh to give a neutral to positive score as a movie. On a traditional rating scale this could mean it is anywhere between a 5 and a 10. 64% of the audience thought it was somewhere between there. 36% of the audience did not even think that.
You might enjoy EFAP, then every frame a pause, and Criical Drinker. Both channels are focused on writing and storytelling, and the latter is an accomplished novelist.
Thank you Corridor for giving David Lowrey a spot light for Green Knight. This was my stand out film from 2021 (I only put it over DUNE because Green Knight tells a complete story, whereas Dune is clearly a two part story). A 'simple', cohesive, and beautiful film that feels character and actor driven, not driven by the company, or executives, or a script that was spread between 10 different people, all with opposite ideals. I feel like films like that are missing these days.
They get so close to the problem with pete's dragon. "The magic of seeing a cartoon integrate interact with real people". And "We need to do this and that to make it more real".

@@vicmartone He means SFX. If computers are involved it's VFX, if it's practical or other pre-computer stuff, that's called SFX. "S" for "special".
The most elaborate and impressive costumes i have ever seen in movies have been in Del Toro's for example Pan's Labyrinth or The Shape of the Water

Just file everything under "Filmmakers React" cause any aspect you tackle (sound editing, lighting, set design, blocking, etc) with an expert in that area will be amazing to watch.
The Green Knight will forever hold a special place for me. Not only is it a masterclass in film making that I was in awe of the entire time, when it came to theaters in 2021, it was the first quality theatrical experience I had since the pandemic closed theaters. Sitting down in a dark theater with that giant screen, seeing the lights go down and then instantly getting transported away to Lowery's amazing vision was an emotional experience. But even without that anecdote, The Green Knight is an absolute must watch.

"Disney director" in not really a high standard these days considering all of the mediocre or straight up bad stuff they've released in the past few years, one of it being Peter Pan and Wendy which this guy directed. He looks like a cool dude on a personal level which is nice and all, but movie wise is plain mediocre considering the average score of his movies as a director is like 6-ish and the definition of "we'll fix it in post". I wouldn't say it's a banger start.
@@alkaya1907 I don't know if you've been here from the start, but the VFX / Animators react channel started from small beginnings, and certainly never had access to the talent they regularly include nowadays. So if this is their first guest, give it 100+ episodes like they've had with their other series have and they'll be on the couch with some of the greatest directors working just like they currently do with the quality of talent in the stuntmen/vfx/animators react videos.
I do take your point, but maybe you missed mine. I don't expect you to have watched since then, but you'd know if you had that if they can get this talent on their first episode they're going to have much bigger ones on the horizon.
@@walterroux291 Yes I have been here for many years even before the VFX reacts and I'm not sure what does this have to do with anything. I never said in my comment there is need to be some big Hollywood name director on the show and I think you misunderstood mine because my intent was not for them to get huge Hollywood names, but to get people who made good films even if they're smaller/indie directors working on smaller projects. It doesn't need to be a huge studio production to create a good movie and that's why I said that Disney director is not really a high standard, because even as a big studio they don't really inspire high quality product or art these days because for them everything is about the formula and not the art.

I'm very happy to see the director perspective. its a very different animal from VFX and stunts and I think this will be my favorite version of this show. You're also helping your audience with film literacy!
It's like a director's commentary but with visuals and without the 2 hour length of pauses and boring parts lol
Although I love Petter Pan & Wendy for making Disney lose money a little bit faster, I also appreciate the effort put into it (except for the writing part).
And this is also something I love about this series. Some movies may be bad, but you can still appreciate parts of it, be it vfx, stunts, etc.
I really didn't enjoy the Green Knight when I saw it in theaters, but I appreciate what went into the direction & choices made a lot more now.
And yes, I knew what kind of movie I was getting into when I first watched it. People always suggest "you probably thought it would be an action/fantasy film right?" but no... Still, I really enjoyed this episode & David's insight. Can't wait to see more Directors React!

Would be curious what the original poster didn't like at first. I loved The Green Knight because so much of Hollywood takes superheros/war absurdly seriously now, and it was a heartfelt movie about someone not only *bad* at being a hero but also questioning whether that's a good thing to do with your life. The whole conflict isn't "defeat the bad guy", it's "why is this better than staying home with my community?". I don't think that's too deep for people, everybody would have understood it as a comedy (Clerks!), but maybe some got thrown off by expecting a more regular plot, or thinking there's some bigger puzzle than the character's own emotions.
Love it so darn much. David Lowery is already one of my favourite modern filmmakers, so glad you opened the series with him, can't wait for every next chapters of his, and for the next great video of yours. so good

I LOVE the new react series. Having director POV on film making along with Stunt/VFX is amazing all the different perspectives and reasonings behind the decisions they make in a film. David Lowery is so cool to have as the first also very down to earth and humble feeling through out the video.

Got to feel sorry for him having Peter Pan and Wendy in his portfolio.
The script/writing was absolutely terrible and to have to create that visually must have been a true burden.
His other films have been entertaining but PP&W was an absolute shambles and it's straight to streaming finale summed up that the studio had no confidence in it.
Ohh man what a great idea to bring directors onto this series, what an awesome way to keep things fresh! Can't wait for many more of these episodes, I already know I'll be learning so much about filmmaking, which I'll then be able to apply to my own short films! Keep up the great work :)

Something I have learned over the past few years from this is A24 is one of the coolest studios(?) in the industry for taking little known talent and helping them make it big. I would honestly love to have someone in charge of A24 on the couch and learning how they find these people.

@@owyx8608Don’t think I’ll watch Peter Pan & Wendy, but the Green Knight is one of the best movies I’ve seen in years. Really surprising how well done it was. Loved the non-linearity of it. Obviously the aesthetics and the VFX were amazing, but what really got me was how he retold the coming of she, “becoming a man/adult” story, in such a brilliant fashion. You could really feel the fear and shame the character felt. Especially in the scene where he is tempted by the Nobel man’s wife and “prematurely jumps the gun”, and the secondhand embarrassment you feel for the character is so real.
So…I get if it’s not someone’s cup of tea, but to say it’s not a really well done movie, is flat out insulting.

@randomvideoboy1 I watched the movie having no idea about the original poem source material or anything else about the context of the movie. If you go into a movie expecting to take everything literally, or have everything spelled out for you, you're definitely limiting the number of movies you can enjoy. Maybe that sounds pretentious, but it's not hard to be more open minded. I'm not pretending like I understood everything on my first watch, but leaving some plot points up to interpretation really got me to think more about the movie and made me want to revisit it. Let alone that it's beautifully shot. People have different tastes in movies, and the great thing is that there are plenty, plenty of movies for you that are faster paced and tell you exactly what happens with no room for ambiguity.
This brings us one step closer to the the Corridor Digital school of film. As someone that has never had anything to do with film making all of these series have given me an appreciation for the work and thought that goes into the process. I sincerely hope that these videos inspire new filmmakers.

You've spoken with the stuntmen and women who make our hearts jump. You've spoken with the VFX coordinators and specialists who help make a scene or movie pop. This is a terrific spin on talking to the person who brought it all together with his (or her, hopefully) vision of what the movie could / should be. This is what getting an in-depth and insightful look into filmmaking should be. Geep up the amazing work, guys!!

I wasn't really paying much attention to the cinematography because I was too busy cringing continuously during that movie, but he seems like a cool guy and I'd be interested to see what he can do when given a move that's not pure poison.

How do you know that it lost money? It was a straight to Disney+ release. There are no box office numbers you could study. Is this just based on vibes?
$170M just for shots, plus advertisement and it was a flop because noone wanted to see it in the first place because they valued race-swapping and making women girl-bosses instead of telling a good story for the hundreth time.

Your "dramactially decreased" viewership claim is just conservative fan fiction I guess, I have no idea where that comes from.

The RT score refers to the percentage of the audience that thought the movie was good eniugh to give a neutral to positive score as a movie. On a traditional rating scale this could mean it is anywhere between a 5 and a 10. 64% of the audience thought it was somewhere between there.
36% of the audience did not even think that.
To be honest I'd be happy with literally any director, I feel like everyone will have some fresh insights and interesting stories.

You might enjoy EFAP, then every frame a pause, and Criical Drinker. Both channels are focused on writing and storytelling, and the latter is an accomplished novelist.

Thank you Corridor for giving David Lowrey a spot light for Green Knight. This was my stand out film from 2021 (I only put it over DUNE because Green Knight tells a complete story, whereas Dune is clearly a two part story).
A 'simple', cohesive, and beautiful film that feels character and actor driven, not driven by the company, or executives, or a script that was spread between 10 different people, all with opposite ideals.
I feel like films like that are missing these days.
So THIS is the guy who destroyed the legacy of Pete's Dragon....
They get so close to the problem with pete's dragon. "The magic of seeing a cartoon integrate interact with real people". And "We need to do this and that to make it more real".
Should have asked David how he felt when all of these movies flopped at the box office.

I don't think Peter Pan was in theaters... as a movie it's a bit uneven. The initial minutes are uninteresting, but the final part is quite good.
