I only got to see mum once this week Bob, I had my second Covid jab on Thursday, then spent all day Friday with a mega hangover 🤕 we normally put a half bucket of water down the hole first as well so it wets from the bottom up too, but this hole was slowly filling itself anyway so we didn’t bother this time. Most of my gate posts are firmed in like this, it takes a bit longer to get a truly hard concrete but so far I have had no failures. 🙂👍🏼
Top Tip - Toolstation sell extra length hinges. Down here in Kent the ground can move quite a bit, and having long hinges means you can always adjust more than standard hinges if needed.
I've always liked to use type one and cement to set metal gateposts. A slightly damp mix and tamped into the hole. Interesting to see how other people do it.

That is the first time I seen it done like that. We would always wet the concrete before we put in the hole. ( and then have a barrow and shovel to wash out) . You got a nice finish to the concrete round the post. (a lot nicer than we would leave a post) There is only one thing Ian, would it not be an idea to load the barrow last. Use it to load other things first. Someone had to make three trips loading the cement were the barrow would have done it in one
Farmer p don't want to sound like a know it all but I do fencing for a living... If you get a old 20 gallon dug and a wisk for plaster on the end of a drill you can mix concrete without the back braking labor........ Just saying
Another job well done and the 'gaffer' turned up that's what your staff get paid for, one to hold the camera and the other to hold the level just in case it gets squashed with the mini digger. Was biskit on rabbit watch ?? was that the funky farmer's silage going back to the farm ??
Thank you for this instructional video... I just have one question regarding how much clearance I should leave from the bottom of the gate to the ground? I am doing this by myself as a female so wish me luck but could definitely do with any extra hints or tips, if you have any, lol🙈
I set my gates low on purpose to stop walkers dogs going under them. 6" to 10" clearance should be adequate, just remember things like snow. If its a gate you use a lot and get snow, set them a bit higher to allow for the winter months. You wont need luck. Brains will often outdo brawn. 🙂👍

EDIT: we have many kinds mortar mix we have Ready Mix that's got the aggregate of the size for the job your doing.. and we got different size Aggregate and Ready Mix.. just take the bag poured in the hole add the water and it sets up and it works wonderful.. do y'all have that there? And your teaching the guys a few lessons.. In just like you I know a little of everything..my dad taught me..
Yes we can buy post mix etc but it’s about 3x the cost of mixing our own. And I’m too tight to let a bit of graft make me spend more than I need to. 😄👍🏼
Met a guy in a Saigon bar couple of months back, in conversation he told me he supplies B&Q with bagged cement products. His plant is just down the road from me and that's 40 klicks from Saigon. I'm amazed he can supply it cheaper than a local UK firm.
A good job, but why did u not use rough sand with the cement and slightly wet it before putting it around the post.We irish would also put some lumps of field/ditch stones in around the post through the concrete to secure it in place while tapping the concrete in all around it.Then our gate posts are guaranteed to withstand a lot more weight from the weight of the hanging gate. etc.At the same time, Im sure yr gate aint going to go anywhere anytime soon.lol...Keep up those great videos Ian
Hello Ian, do you know why we don't have thumb's on diggers in the UK, it would make so many jobs go faster and easier. Even a non hydraulic one would be helpful for pulling or holding logs for cutting up. In europe and the USA they almost come as standard.
When I got the first jab, they told me to make sure I worked that arm muscle. I dug a trench with a pick axe. It worked. My arm felt fine (my lower back, I won’t say).
And biskit sees that is going the right way. Whole was to deep biskit helped by filling it a bit up. The tree generations working to gether. Dad grandad greatgrandad. Ow and mister martin looked and thought this is right.
Good video again interesting work ethic your dad in his buggy watching and talking to Martin other tree team member doing the filming while you do most of the work. Would it make sense to put the cement in the barrow and wheel it over to the land rover instead of carrying them or was that one of your things to catch us

The two small parcels of grass won’t, but this new gate will give us much better access to all our existing arable grounds on that side of the road. 🙂👍🏼
But there's a reason you put the water with the mix and not just throw it on top hoping the mix won't soak up all the water before the bottom , Oh well Pulling a Pullen again =-P
It’s slower to set all through than a wet mix for sure, but within a day it’s still strong enough to hang a big gate, and within a month it will be as hard as a conventional wet mix. Pushing the bar in 18” helps get the air out and water in as well 🙂
With out sounding like a light geek, when you backed up to the trailer… your drivers brake light was duller than the other side… possibly a bulb in the wrong way round 🤷🏻♂️

I don’t use wooden gates any more, except up around the house. I prefer steel, they last a lifetime and are more secure.

Better to put water in the the hole first, they add your concrete mix, seems to set quicker and stronger 💪

Both posts were level, but the gate hinges were only eyed in until I corrected them later. 🙂👍🏼
