    This is a great tutorial on cuttings. I have a beautiful Hydrangea plant my neighbor gave me. It was a tiny thing at the time. She had it in a pot and just couldn't get it to grow. I placed the plant in the grown and it took off.
    I've been wanting to take some cuttings but I kept putting it off. Thanks to you and this great Video I'm going to cut later on today. I'll make sure to cut where the flowers haven't grown yet.

      Hi John Doherty, I keep mine in an unheated greenhouse, it goes down to-5/6c in winter. Hydrangeas are hardy outside plants, so ok with a colder climate. Once they have lost their leaves they take a frost well. However if growing in pots a bit of frost protection around the pot will help the roots, when planted in the ground the soil itself is a good insulator. If you do keep them indoors over winter make sure they don’t get too warm, they like a bit of cold to help them to flower the following year. I get messages from people growing them in the tropics where they don’t get seasons, this can be an issue. As with all plants, have a look at where they grow naturally in the wild and mimic that. Bottom line, hydrangeas are hardy plants that have evolved in an environment with seasonal differences so the cold is a part of their natural cycle. I hope this is of some help Robbie

      @@johndoherty2689 it’s quite normal for them to loose their leaves at this time of year. They will just be sticks over winter, keep them on the dry side until they start to actively grow again in spring. You should have small buds left on them when the leaves fall. Just at the growing tips, these are the leaves for next year, all set and ready to start growing again in spring. I hope this helps Robbie 🌻

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tasha Albers, thanks for your kind words 🌼 I don’t treat the bugs myself, I just wait for another bug to come along and let nature sort it out. For me the bugs eating the leaves are all part nature’s dance. I know, a bit controversial, but once you except the bugs as a part of the whole thing then getting a few leaves eaten is a good thing! If it’s a bad attack then soapy water works well. I do use nematodes for vine weevil grubs though as I had a terrible time with them a few years ago and they live under the soil in pots so don’t have the natural predators of flies and bugs. Whatever you use be natural, chemical solutions may be an effective cure for the problem in our eyes but it only creates far more problems down the line. Oh, ladybirds 🐞 are good for green and black fly, available online believe it or not!! I hope this helps, all the best Robbie 🌻

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anita Amin, both bay and olive trees can be propagated from cuttings. Semi ripe cuttings work well (like the hydrangeas) For the best results take them mid summer when that year’s growth has just started to harden. You can also take hard wood cuttings at anytime of year. This is when you use the hard growth from the previous year. Always remember that they may not all work so take loads! I hope this helps Robbie 🌻

      Hi Queeny GB, I use compost that was used the year before for bedding plants, it’s basically spent multi purpose compost, all the nutrition has been used up. Old hanging baskets from the previous year, the compost tomatoes were grown in. The main thing it does is retain a bit of moisture with no nutrients. Leave the pots in the soak bowl until the top of the soil is wet (about 20mins) and then take out. I hope this helps Robbie 🌻

      John Wordsmith thank you for your kind words. It was my kids idea to do these vids and I must admit I was as surprised as anyone else to discover I’m kinda good at it. I have found that hydrangeas don’t need rooting hormone, they root so readily without any assistance. Some argue that the hormone will encourage stronger roots to grow and protect the raw cut from infection. I have not done a ‘with/without’ test yet but feel one coming on for next spring. Maybe use clear plastic pots to see the roots growing. In answer to your question, no I don’t use anything but will put it to the test in a few vids next year. All the very best and thanks for watching Robbie 🌻

    • @stinkyditchnursery750

      zZz. Mante to be honest, I don’t know with hydrangeas. Many plants can be propagated from just the roots, I have had lots of success with hardy geraniums. I just lay the roots in a seed tray of cuttings mix and cover them with about 1/2 inch more mix. I think I’ve done a vid about it. I’d give it a go with your roots, nothing to loose and it might work. Here in the uk hydrangeas are coming to the end of their growing season this may mean the roots will sit for some time before actively starting to grow, leaving them open to rot or infections. It’s maybe a question of tricking the root that it is still summer, a warm windowsill inside might work, a shady window though. Oh and keep them damp, not too wet not too dry. I do hope you give it a go, these are the sort of experiments that make propagation so exciting for me, a method that works on one plant and trying it on another genus. They may grow, they may not but I wish you all the very best of luck Robbie 🌻

    Can I plant cuttings on October like jasmine? Please reply

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nisha Patel, sorry for the late reply. There are quite a few plants that can grown from cuttings in October. If your jasmine is an outside hardy variety then hardwood cutting can be taken over the winter months. I have done a video about taking rose cuttings in winter if that’s any help, it’s the same for any hardwood cuttings. If your jasmine is an indoor plant then cuttings are best taken in spring or summer whilst the plant is growing. The best thing to do is just have a go and see if they work. The rule of thumb is hardwood cuttings in autumn/winter and green or semi ripe cuttings in spring/summer. I hope this is of some help, all the best of luck Robbie

    I've been researching WHEN to take cuttings and thank you for explicitly saying it. I will also take cuttings now as it is starting to rain here in the Philippines.
    Would you know if hydrangeas in tropical places like ours will hibernate given that we don't have winter here? Or should i expect them to continue to live and have leaves but will just bloom again next summer? Thanks.

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Giana and Joevic’s Adventures, I’m not entirely sure, hydrangeas come from countries with seasons so this will be part of their makeup. They may stay evergreen but may also be a bit reluctant to flower without a cold spell at some point in the year. I’m guessing at altitude in the tropics they may feel a little more at home. There is only one way to find out, care for it well with regular water and food, allow it to rest for a few months a year by reducing food and water and just see what happens! Nature generally finds a way. Sorry not to be of more help, all the best Robbie 🌻

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Karl .Burton, if the cutting mix contains nutrients the cuttings don’t put as much energy into growing roots and concentrate on growing leaves. When taking cuttings we are trying to encourage root growth, the lack of nutritious stuff in the soil encourages the plant to grow roots looking for some. Once a good root structure has grown and we pot on the cuttings they can take on all the nutrition they need far more effectively. I hope this answers your question, all the best Robbie 🌻

      Maria Thompson the best time to take hydrangeas cuttings is spring/summer to give them a long growing season. Saying that I’ve taken them at this time of year before with some success. I’d try a few, they may take, but I’m afraid to say next spring will probably give you better results. If it was me I’d do a bit of an experiment, take maybe 9-10 cuttings now and again in spring, see how they do. Sorry it’s not the answer that you are after but spring will be here before you know it! Why to no nutrition in cutting mix?

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi wiggledy toes, a cutting mix has no nutrition in it to encourage the new roots to grow looking for food. If you have nutrition in the mix the roots will grow a bit but then the cuttings will concentrate on top growth knowing that it has found a food source. With cuttings we are after a growing a good root structure before putting all its energy into leaves and flowers. The lack of food is all about encouraging the plants to go “looking” for some and therefore growing a good root structure before being potted on. I hope this answers your question, all the best Robbie 🌻

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Carolyn, with nutrition the cuttings will grow just enough roots to drink and then put their energy into growing leaves to photosynthesise (to eat). With a lack of nutrition the cuttings will grow longer, stronger roots in an attempt to find nutrition before putting on top growth, this will give us a much stronger baby plant to pot on and grow. With cuttings it’s all about growing a good root structure. I hope this helps, Robbie 🌻
