      🤣 B has mentioned that we do aquaponics at work to folks who mention it only to find out that they follow our channel already.
      Aquaponics & growing your own food has become popular again over the past few years I think. 🤔

    I don't know how it never occurred to me as an option before, but applying container gardening to aquaponics is brilliant. I'd about bet that if you happen to get a basket that doesn't allow roots to penetrate where the material is wet, you could (for future plantings) just cut a handful of small holes through the bottom with a hallow punch bit to make it a bit easier for the roots to find a way through.

    So in the aquarium fishkeeping world, theres this method called dirted tank where we use actual garden soil topped with sand to sustain our aquatic plants. And it worked wonderfully! Took a while after for me to finally click in, "hey isn't using soil in aquaponics basically the same as this?? Theres no need to fear nutrient overload, as the soil IS also a filter along with the healthier roots" 😂
    Some of my plants especially mint could really use some boost so im gonna switch from clay pellets to having soil mix

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate. 👍The main issue I have is a large amount of nutrients being flushed into the system at once through the heavy rain events we have. Not an issue in our system due to the small amount of soil but I think it could be a big issue in one with mainly soil beds here. Inside a green house, no issue all all.
      Cheers mate

    Around 10 years ago, I made a very elaborate aquaponics set up with NFT, towers, beds, it had it all; it wouldn’t grow anything at all. I finally salvaged my whole build by putting net cups in the bottom of root bags and that made it so it wasn’t all a total loss. The ph was always to high, I believe I had limestone in my media, I was cautious, but something slipped passed me for sure.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm going to be using sand & soil beds primarily in a future build. Will still have a "conventional" grow media one as well I think as they are the easiest for a lot of folks to build & run.

    Hey Rob Bob, I have talked with you before(I’m admin of the organic hydroponics Facebook group) anyways I used to use smaller 1/4 gallon fabric pots that sat in a shallow sloped open ended gutter (so no water level just wicking when the water was flowing) attached to my Dutch bucket system so it ran every few hours. Anyways I used soil for the medium and had a layer of pebbles that the fabric pots sat on to allow water to pass under. It really worked great for herbs and smaller plants like strawberries and the worms really loved the pebble/root area.
    The issue I had is the fabric pots works too well in that it wicked too much the entire fabric pot was wicking moisture so it started growing moss over an inch thick coving all sides. Being in dry California the constantly wet sides of the pots were causing lots of want to evaporate. The bigger issue is I think along with the water I was loosing nutrients, I know nitrogen is easily gassed off.
    Anyways the dual zone works great I would just suggest using fabric pots that only have the bottom that wicks. You could also do what I did and wrapped the pots in foil and foil tape(foil wont break down in UV). With foil depending on the PH it can dissolve slowly(totally fine for plants and humans to intake some and it’s even needed, just not sure on fish) it’s probably not really an issue but just figured I’d mention it. Using pots that only have the air pruning on the bottom is probably the best best if you have the same issues I had in California. Having higher humidity could be very helpful.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get moss grow ion the blueberry pouches down the back as well. 😉
      I'm not overly concerned about the nitrogen off gassing in my system as the nitrate is very high at the moment. I can see where it would be a big issue for folks that run with tighter nutrient regimes.
      Cheers Kevin & have a top one mate.

  • @RemarkXer
    @RemarkXer ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Maybe you could make a smaller dual root zone system that is more in line with what Steve recommends, with a bell siphon or timer and a single container for clay and soil, so that the water forces air exchange. I've tried a few different simplifications of Steve's system and they all end up lacking in some way.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe at some point. I'd have to get some pots first . The pouches also allow for some gas exchange naturally so that's a bit of a bonus.

      We get a few tree snakes, eastern browns & pythons but have bever them go after the fish here. I know some species will actively hunt fish but none around here.

    Hello Rob, greetings from California, USA. Curious to know if you use added fertilizer in these systems since fish tanks mainly provides Nitrogen. How do plants get other macro and micronutrients. thanks

      Hey mate. I have added activated rock minerals as well as kelp / seaweed solutions to help with the micro nutrients. Compost & worm teas can also help in that regard.
      This video may helps some as well,

      @@RobsAquaponics gday mate, I was just following up on your saying any comments help you.
      Dom is my son and says the internet tells him of my likes and comments. Just thought I could kill two birds with one stone, comment for you as asked and find out if Dom gets told of great sites like yours or just crappy ones.
      Take care Rob

    Just put sand in those, no need for soil

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว

      I want the added nutrients & bacterial activity from soil based blends as well. 😉 Aquaponics water isn't a complete nutrient mix as some would have you think. It's good enough but soil will always be king.

    In an aquaponics system
    What elements are present in fish tank water that plants need to grow?
    Do we need to add other elements to the water?
