My dad raised Scottish highlander cattle for a time and I along with my brother helped him. They are more like a 1000 pound dog than beef breed. Very gentle and hardy.

Howdy, from way down under, Australia. Just watched Chad of Adler Farm picking up his young Highland bull calf.
These Highland cattle look so nice . But hate to meet a temperamental bull with those horns.
Only once experienced a charging (fast run) bull while retrieving my RC glider from base of the hill we were flying from, in what believed an empty paddock. Foolishly, too far from the fence to run I stood firm, and surprise a short distance away, the bull stopped looked, then turrned aside then even started away, but turned back.again and stood. Maybe a minute we stood facing off. The bull dragged a front foot on the ground, head a bit low. I dared to start slowly towards my glider, about 200 yards away. The bull walked towards me, I stood still, but even more scary to me the bull walked up to me, brushed my arm with a horn. I was petrified, but finally put a hand on the near horn. The bull turned its head, so I brushed down its face, and the let it sniff my hand.
Finally after rubbing the face and head more it snorted then turned and trotted away.
I still shaking retrieved the glider and departed. Took over an hour to relax
Still hate to think what could have resulted, had that encounter become bad. I simply was not aware of the bull there, as we had flown above that paddock from the hill above for years. The dairy farm only had cows there occasionally. Well I survived, and learned a lesson
Other model glider friends saw it, none dared to try helping, and I do not blame them. Still do not know what about standing still made the bull stop its run towards me, or why it became so docile finally, just glad it was.

I really enjoyed that. I actually live in the Scottish Highlands so seeing these cattle is not an uncommon sight. It was just nice to get your take on the breed and to learn how they adapt to a very different climate. By way of comparison it's early July here and the outdoor temperature today is 52º - colder than your winter's day. It's not always that cold here in the summer but we never get anywhere close to 100º.

You can have Highland cows for 20 years, and they keep producing calves for all that time!
Plus, they thrive on poor pasture where even sheep would stuggle to graze: They give a whole lot and ask very little in return........truly Scottish, LOL!!
