  • It is simple to replace the hard disc in a Synology NAS. The actions you can do are as follows:
    1. Identify the Failed Drive:
 Log into DiskStation Manager (DSM).
 Open the “Storage Manager” app.
 Check the status of your drives under “HDD/SSD”. The failed drive will show a red status like “Crashed” or “Failed”.
    2. Prepare for Replacement:
 Ensure you have a compatible replacement drive. It’s recommended to use drives from Synology’s compatibility list1.
 If your NAS supports hot-swapping, you can replace the drive without shutting down the system. Otherwise, power off the NAS.
    3. Replace the Drive:
 Remove the failed drive from the NAS enclosure.
 Insert the new drive into the same slot.
    4. Repair the Storage Pool:
 Go back to “Storage Manager” in DSM.
 Select the storage pool that includes the replaced drive.
 Click on the three-dot icon and choose “Replace Drive”.
 Follow the prompts to add the new drive to the storage pool and start the repair process.
    5. Monitor the Repair Process:
 The repair process may take some time, depending on the size of the drive and the amount of data.
 Once the repair is complete, check the status of the storage pool to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
