When I was 7, an old couple adopted me from the US. She was British, he was American like me. After 5 years of living with them, they brought me to their Spanish house in Competa. They were a little bit well off but they were also crazy as hell. They had a house in the top right of the village right next to a warehouse, and they had been using it to store their things in preparation for retirement. In the summer of 2012, she had decided to spend a few months there sorting out the house while her husband was working. She brought me with her, and it was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Nobody from the village liked her because she was arrogant and entitled, privileged and polluted, and so she spent alot of her time drinking wines and writing. I was pretty confused and lonely and isolated, as a kid doesn't really appreciate the things adults do. She had me working all day, sorting out her stuff and moving boxes to her garage. She didn't really have any kids books, or a tv, or any games or anything a kid would use to keep themself busy. After long days of working in her garage, I'd have to spend the evening with her and become her personal therapist. She would become too drunk to function, and then either pour her heart out to me about her life regrets or become slightly dangerous. So many night she made me sleep out on the balcony or didn't give me dinner because she was drunk and just didn't know what she was doing. Her (ex) friends a couple houses down had gotten a bit suspicious of how she was treating me after noticing me outside by myself all night several times, but she ended up just blocking them out and securing the bubble around me even more. I grew pretty depressed, nothing to do and nobody to talk to. I could hear music coming from people's garages, or hear kids at the playground nearby. I'd take breaks from working to read some of the books this lady owned. One book I read was one she had written, and it had failed so bad that she had dozens of these boxes filled with them that she just didn't know what to do with. This one morning, I saw her flip phone on the table while she was in the bathroom. I opened it out of curiosity and discovered a game on it. I'd never played video games before and I hadn't done anything fun all year, even if I was in the best vacation country. I started playing, but the excitement was short lived because she walked into the kitchen and caught me red handed. She had a hangover had no patience, so she wasted no time and jumped straight to physically punishing me. I was so scared, I ran out the door. I was still wearing pajamas, I could feel my body shaking as the adrenaline pumped through me. I didn't even know where to go, I didn't know anyone or anything. I didn't speak Spanish, I just had to get the hell out of there. I saw a sign for Nerja, a coast town I recognized, and just started walking down the mountain on the winding roads. About 40 minutes in, a you f man from the street stops nearby and asks if I need a ride, I asked if he was going to Nerja and he said yeah. As soon as I get in, he locked the doors and turned around. As the realization kicked in, I frantically tried the door and windows as he tried to calm me down in Spanish. I cried the whole time back, sweaty and tired but just tired of whatever life I was living. He dropped me off to her, and she gave them a whole show and thanked them for returning me. Later that night she brought me to her room in the back of the house to beat me mercilessly, and then leave me outside on a side balcony where nobody could see me for days with no food or water. I remember at one point, I started talking to a plant, asking it if I should attempt to jump off the balcony onto a part that wasn't so high. To this day she still lives there, and although I'm no longer with her I still seak closure for a part of my life that I can't even explain.

Hard to believe Competa looks so quiet on the day you filmed this, it’s usually heaving.
