I am an MIT astrophysicist and in the Summer of 2022 I spent a month on Devon Island performing an experiment looking at the beginning of the first stars in the universe. It is a wild, amazing, foreboding place. Very difficult to get there (have to take multiple planes, with the last one being a charter flight), and you have to carry a shotgun with you at all times due to the polar bears. We hopped a ride with the Houghton Mars Project, which has a base up there and runs astronaut tests since Devon is as close to a mars analog as we have on earth.
@@robbierotten2024 No, it clearly won't. We were supposed to use three different types of ammo (in this order): a "bear banger", which just makes a very loud noise, a rubber bullet, and then an actual bullet. If you kill a polar bear, you actually have to pay a $25,000 fine, no matter the circumstances. Of course, if a polar bear wanted to eat you, it would eat you, shotgun or no.

Alright, so for the Spaceguessr segment: 1: The ISS, constantly moving so no permanent location but Johnson space center will do, 2: US Pathfinder lander and Sojourner rover (on the right) on Mars, in Ares Vallis 3: Devon Island, guessed correctly so yeah, 4: The Moon, so called "Geology Station 5" near Stone Mountain, taken during the Apollo 16 mission, 5: Mars, on the edge of Yellowknife Bay, taken by the Curiosity Rover on Sol (mars day) 170. This didn't take as long as I thought it would tbh.
@@SpiderElf-jz6se Fair guess, but if you look at images the terrain isn't the same (loose rocks for Viking 2 vs shale-like rocks here) and the rover has this distinct silver thing on it's back (seen here on the left). Apart from that, Mount Sharpe is (barely) visible on the right, which is present in basically all of Curiosity's panoramas.

I might be totally wrong, but for the location in space that take place on the Moon or Mars it might be that the "random" locations are actually the Moon or Mars equivalent of the same position (i.e. if you swapped the earth map for the Mars map it would make sense).
It would be amazing to find a desert that looks really orange on earth, and make a convincing replica of one of the Mars rovers, complete with realistic damage, then take a picture from it. You would just have one of those blue "street view" spots randomly in the middle of nowhere and when people click it they would think Google Maps glitched out
One time a long time ago I was using street view (I don't remember if it was just on maps or was geoguessr) but I was in some rural area and suddenly it put me on Mars as I was driving along. I clicked along again and I was back on earth and when I tried to go back, it never went back to Mars. It freaked me out.
AFAIK the images on other planets have the actual coordinates on that planet where that the "streetview" images were taken. If I remember correctly google maps/google earth is supposed to have the moon and mars available for viewing in map mode too.
8:05 That's the moon. An apollo Mission. Could be apollo 15, 16 or 17. 11 12 and 14 had too flat terrain for that image. It's easy to find them in Google Earth.
