I prefer the spoken translation because I like to do things while listening to the videos, so it’s handy to not need to read the subtitles :) Add on: I’m also dyslexic, so it’s nice to not have to try and frantically read even if I am watching the video :)
I have pretty severe OCD but I'd say it's been well-managed for the most part with some treatment. However, during my first semester living on a college campus (which just so happened to coincide with heavy COVID restrictions in 2020), it got worse than I ever remember it being. A major part of it for me then was problems with writing. I would be writing notes for my classes and it would end up taking me 3-4x as long as it would have before to write since I have to go back and erase, rewrite, erase, rewrite SO many times. Not to mention it'd have to be in intervals of 4. So even if how I wrote the word "felt right," if it hadn't been the fourth in an interval, I'd have to redo it anyway. It was extremely aggravating and made it so that I wasn't even able to pay attention to what I was supposed to be learning! I ended up having to leave campus early and go home before the semester was even halfway over. OCD can be so debilitating and I wish more people would understand that. Thank you for making this vid!
Same is very debilitating and desperating. I have to do almost everything in pairs, like eveything i touch i had to retouch it in pair numbers, 2,4,6,8, etc, times until it feels right. Even when i hurt myself i feel the need of getting hurt twice, and i have to do it. And yeah exams are horrible, i get so nervous about doing things rights, i can't stop moving, but then i get super anxious cause i take too much time on that and i can't move to the other questions or pages
I’ve been an avid reader all my life. And I mean it. My father was the same. But I’ve got married to a man who doesn’t read, doesn’t like books, he has absolutely no interest in books whatsoever. When we moved to his country, all my beloved books were thrown away by him directly to a huge garbage dumpster. After that day, I have never read a single book. I buy books for my daughter every month but I feel like it’s a lot of effort to read one of them. I think I should seek some help. I might be depressed due to all the changes in my life. And I didn’t realize that until I’ve watched this video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
I'm annoyed at the general public's casual references to OCD. Such as when someone wants to procrastinate and when caught says "blame it on my OCD". They are trivializing a serious issue.
Damn. I makes me super anxious to fill out or sign anything at all that's important in any way. I re-read my emails several times before and after hitting send. My psychiatrist told me I have obsessive traits, but my main problem was melancholic depression. I will always be thankful to my psychiatrist for helping me out of it. Those were really the darkest eight years of my life, when my illness was at its worst.
It was interesting to hear about countertransference. I think sometimes therapists get carried away by their own emotions and are quickly to judge how easy or difficult it should be to face a situation for someone that they forget to help the patient. Anyway, your translating skills are impressive 💜 if you ever need to translate your content into Spanish let me know 💜🙏

I watched a bunch of these videos a few months ago. I found them oddly fascinating. But, also saddening. Your videos were recommended to me and I’m glad they were! I love learning about these things.
I feel like a lot of mental illness stems from the way we’ve created society. We judge people based off the way they speak, dress, move, behave, etc. people who are true to themselves are bound to feel mentally ill because they do no conform to societal ideals.
Here is an interesting article summarising the views of Thomas Szasz who believed that there was no such thing as mental illness, only made up labels created by psychiatrists for behaviour that they thought was non-comformative: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5353517/ There is some merit to this view when we look back at the history of psychiatry and many of the conditions which were once labeled as a mental illness (e.g., homosexuality) but which are no longer considered to be a mental illness. Although with modern brain imaging it's easier to point to objective differences between the brains of 'healthy' people and people with sever mental illness...although that leaves the question 'who defines "healthy"?'
New subscriber, I love your breakdown, translation and the French language...I went to Le Lycee Francais as child..in California, sadly I don't remember much...I've been winging my mental illness sans medication for years..it helps to understand it better..also to know its not just me🗝
Good video! Lots of good info. Thanks. Luvox, exposure therapy, and CBT has really helped me coexist with my OCD. It's really interesting how much the understanding of this disease has evolved from a medical standpoint since I was first diagnosed in 1998. Medicine in combination with an OCD familiar therapist really works wonders. Interesting that I never worked in exposures until a few years ago. It was just medicine and CBT in the late 90s and early 2000's.
I’m a new subscriber as well. Thank you so much for your analysis; also, I really enjoy hearing you speak French. With the ability to translate like that on the fly, I feel like you must have grown up with a native speaker? It’s interesting to note that no matter the language being spoken, one is still able to see the man is very troubled. I hope he received the support he needed.
He sounds like he speaks slowly because he’s trying to think as he speaks and it’s taking him time. I don’t know how to explain it. But sometimes I sound like that and I have a distant look in my eyes cos my mind isn’t working as fast as usual. I was diagnosed with depression in my twenties and just this year with ADHD, and I feel like they both cause me to talk and think slow.
Amazing reactions. Just found your channel and going through your content. I really do hope you make a more in depth video on OCD. I've just been diagnosed with OCD and been in treatment for a couple of months now after being nonfunctional for weeks. Any insight on the illness helps me understand what I'm going through better. Great channel and hope to see more insightful content from you doctor. Cheers.
New subscriber here 👌 From your Catatonic reaction video.. looking forward to this kind of video really really helpful for my review for Psychometrician licensure exam.. I'm glad I've found your channel 👍👍 greetings from the Philippines 🌴
What you need to know is that his first experience with this illness occurred when he left his parents for University but not a random one, it's called Ecole normale supérieure and that's one of the best in France and that means that he's a very intelligent person like it's often the case in such diseases..
Oh, I’ve just found you and I’m so happy for it! And another new subscriber. 👋🏼🤩Thanx for your videos, please continue and go on with them! Your channel is awesome, very interesting and you seem to be really kind person! So good luck and keep going! 😃👍🏼🌸💖
Oh v s that’s so lovely to hear! Thank you so much for your support it truly helps motivate me. If you’d like to support the channel you can consider sharing on Insta or fb and tag me so I can see it !!
New subscriber. :) I was wondering if you could do a video on the phenomenon referred to as 'the yips', which mostly seems to affect athletes? There seem to be a few different theories with regards to the cause, be it psychological or neurological. Would be interesting to hear your take on it!
The signature thing threw me back, I have diagnosed OCD that is managed now, but in middle school I decided I wanted to create a signature. I created one and practiced it obsessively and even though I’m well-managed and pretty symptom free I still feel a bit upset if my signature isn’t ”perfect” and I have often redone it if I can on those electric pads. It usually never is perfect. OCD does leave its marks on you even when you are in remission. I’m known as a pretty particular and intense person, my friends often are afraid of ”displeasing me” if they for example pick out something not fancy enough that isn’t to my taste. I have never gotten angry or even really upset over anything like that, but they do see me picking out stuff or doing things with pretty extreme precision often so I do understand that they might think I’m judging them for the ”wrong choice”. I actually don’t suffer from the need to control others behaviour to soothe my obsessions, like what they touch or how they do things. This was an interesting video, I hope make more OCD content.
I remember in second grade I suddenly got this idea that I had to turn the light switch off and on a certain number of times before I went to bed to prevent something bad from happening 🤔. It only lasted a few months though thankfully. So I was able to reason my way out of it I guess. I think I got mad and decided I wasn't going to let something weird like that control me.
I have a suspicion that children often have this phase. I remember thinking if I don't do certain things (like saying the same prayer every night for a certain amount of time absolutely perfect), my parents were going to die. It didn't last. Though, I have some other mental struggles now, maybe I'm projecting.
I'm about the 4th video into your reactions and you name just hit me. Window sill... At least you didn't take the Doctor NAVY_syl route. Good job with videos and they are helping understand what I've misunderstood all my life. Thank you.
I’ve can effect you physically too causing exhaustion, insomnia and stomach complaints such as going to the toilet too much because of anxiety and agitation not to mention all the mental effects such as depression
I CAN TELL YOU PEOPLE MISTAKE THIS IN ME ALL THE TIME AS NARCASSISTIC, but I HAVE ADRENAL insufficiency and recalling stressful situations closes everything in on me because I can get to feel survival mode lack of control its hard to focus once you isolate yourself for protection

Don't interests like come and go? Or if someone liked reading, they'd always like it, but sometimes they wouldn't read for some reason or another. But they like it. But if they were like "Meh, don't like reading as I used to" then that would be anhedonia?

As far as I understand, all persons in the world show different moods, some are more quiet, some are more expressive. If you turn those moods into symptoms, you are ready to diagnose anybody as crazy.
No offence but going by the Thumbnail alone.. we do wonder if the subject featured in the clip is a relative of yours.. just saying as obviously you both do look incredibly similar. TMDWU.
Brave and desperate people to seek help for OCD in those days, as you risked being labelled insane and locked up against you will amd fed low nutrition value food such as simple carbs to weaken them on the cheap and they used to drug them to sleep all day. Aweful for them to seek help.
Making the point to not turn on the subtitles and translating the vid as you watch it is such a flex

You and the man in the reaction video could could totally be brothers.

Hey there Dr. Syl, I had a question in my mind and thought "let's ask Dr Syl about it". I was wondering about catatonia, It's observed by clinicians as a physical phenomena (as far as I know). Can catatonia (the physical manifestation of a psychological state [which might be neurologically driven]) manifest itself as part of psychopathology of let's say the negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
Catatonia is a name given to a result of something effecting the mind that's causing the physical part of us appear to be frozen, can it be the same thing that's causing the 'halting phenomena' when it comes to patients with negative symptoms, which can lead to halts in functionality in life?
Thanks!

Hey Dr. Syl :)
Really enjoying your videos. Just a comment from a filmmakers perspective: You just skipped about half of the video without any comment why. I did not watch the original yet, but if you do omit parts of the video, please explain why you do so. Otherwise it feels off or could raise questions. Especially if the video is labeled as "REACTS TO". That normally implies that you show everything. Even if the second half is boring or repetitive, just tell us so before you skip it.
I noticed the same in your video about the catatonic schizophreniac (the color one, not the B/W girl), where you edited out a lot of his thinking pauses for brevity. From a filmmaking perspective I get that (in the original theses pauses made the video quite tedious to watch) - but I was expecting at least a comment on this editing decision. Otherwise it seemed quite "untrue" to the original, especially when you just watched it and your video was the next recommendation.
Anyway, minor points. In general your videos are very interesting and you have a great "TH-cam-face" ;) Meaning you come across as really likeable and sympathetic. New subscriber here :)
are ocd causes pychological or neurological ?
Sir, can physical pain tolerance and mental pain tolerance give psychological strength and power?
I have a question. In the video, you mentioned anxiety connecting with physical things. I've heard things about anxiety tics. Is that sort of what you were talking about, and what would be an instance where anxiety could cause something physical to happen?
Hey when you translate it with a voice over I can't really concentrate on what you're saying, can you pause it and translate please? It sounds muffling otherwise.
It's pretty common for men to see the mother of their children differently after.

Your explanation of counter transference is a bit limited. It’s much more than how you feel towards the other person. It’s a much more interactive relational process and is very important to pay attention to.
You said 1976, the title says 1970. Six years is quite a difference. So which is it? The chair & table scream 1970 louder than ‘76, in my opinion - and I’m old enough to remember that era.
The title say 70s
