    Yeah I've just finished this in 2 sittings... Ah I can't even begin to tell you how in shock I am. I literally had no idea what the book was about and yet here I am confidently saying it is my book of 2022
    Can't wait to re-read and see it all connected together!

    Just finished the book and am on the hunt for reviews really delving into the insane timeline and connections that all come together in such a surprising way. Would be very curious to re-read and see the connections.

      I finished about 5 minutes ago and my first instinct was to go on TH-cam and look up reviews and stuff cuz I need to discuss, even if it's through comments and talking to my screen 😂 but I absolutely LOVED it, my first book by this author and I'm amazed and wanting to read her other work! I honestly think this is my new absolute favorite book, it made me think and question everything and I'm so glad I picked it up on a total whim.

    I love time travel stories too and this hung together so well. Really enjoyed this, and felt like this is now my favorite of her books. For some reason I can’t quite put my finger on, I was really reminded of David Mitchell in this book, which is great cause I love him!

    Great review, love your enthusiasm! Finished this this weekend - still reeling. A delight to read, felt more like I was dreaming the story than reading actual words on a page! 'Station Eleven' ordered and in the post but will let this one percolate for a while yet. Thoroughly recommend this book. Thanks for sharing thoughts.

      That is how I feel reading it. Like it’s a dream. 60% in and it’s getting better and better. I’m already going “wait a minute!” Then I flip back to certain pages as I speculate on certain things making some connections. I’m really enjoying this book.

    I have felt much the same way that you did about Mandel's first two works. The Glass Hotel was a real disappointment for me though I think that was mostly because the blurb made it sound like a mystery when it was far more of a character study. I had kind of sworn off reading more of Mandel's work but your review has made me interested to try Sea of Tranquility. Its premise is definitely the most intriguing of her three books so far.

      Well, I hope I don't mislead you or get your hopes up. But I do think the use of time travel makes her style more rewarding.

    I am currently reading Mandel's first published novel, Last Night in Montreal. I've read most of her novels but not yet Sea of Tranquility. I'll probably reread all of them, something I don't do with novels.

    Mandel explicitly states the story's plot hole, and presents it as a glaring oversight of the solar system's greatest scientists...
    I came to this book looking for contemporary, literary scifi, and found the "timeline" or "connections" to be clear cut and predictable

    It introduced some very complex themes but seemed afraid to really deal with them. I found it good but didn’t develop the themes, like simulation theory, that it looked like it was going to do.

    Ive read this book this week and loved it and after that station eleven and the glass hotel. The latter was the least compelling in my opinion.

    CAREFUL, SPOILER AHEAD.
    I am still so confused by SOT. How could he be interviewing himself all along? Because it's not like the "original" him was alive at the points in time he travelled to hundreds of years prior? Would be very grateful for an explanation!

    • @JoshsBookishVoyage
      @JoshsBookishVoyage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was a point where he was told to stop and interview a guitarist who experienced the anomaly I think, but it wasn't givenuch "screentime" likely to divert attention from it being him

    Can you suggest more books like this one

    • @JoshsBookishVoyage
      @JoshsBookishVoyage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, intergenerational and societal advancement could be somewhat applicable to the martian Chronicles, but that's not very character focused so much as a reflection of society. Still probably best comparison I can think of

    I dont understand why so many people like this book, its a cliche of time travel seen over and over again. It reminds me the movie predestination wit ethan hawk ( its 9 years younger that this book)

    • @JoshsBookishVoyage

      There is more to the book than just the basic concept. It has a unique poetic tone, and it's less about the time travel paradoxes and more about the characters' journey.
      Even if it shares some sci-fi aspects, the story is still fundamentally different. The sci-fi isn't revolutionary, but it fits well into her style of a very character focused and interconnected story telling.
