Hey y'all... so the story behind this tune. I was dating this girl, started out great, thought I was ready to change my whole life up for her. I'm not the most stable guy, I tour a lot, I am all over the place, I have an artists mind and a childs heart, i think that those parts of me are what attract women into my life, and also the parts that drive them crazy and, on my end at least, mess up the relationship. She always wanted me to write a song for her. She also always talked about how Black Eyed Susans were her favorite flower. I lived in Maryland, where, coincidentally, the black eyed susan is the state flower. All that was kind of odd. At any rate, I told her I was gonna write a song for her someday called 'Black Eyed Susan' ... and eventually I did. This is it. Sadly, what inspired it wasn't our union, but our breakup. She never got to hear it. I hope she's doing well.. wherever life took her.
Happy Birthday. Thanks for taking your life to help make a lot of our birthdays so much better/worse with your music, swooping in to pick us up when nothing else could. Thanks again.
I sincerely believe Matt's one of the best of our time. Matt, homie, I am so sad it doesn't look like I'll get to see you play in person this year. Rolling my tickets forward though and hoping next year is more reasonable so I can thank you for all the tunes and tell you you're kick ass to your face.
