    ►SCRIPT
    Number 1:
Make video mixes like how I do on TH-cam insert demo of MWM, and demo of another mix with me in front
So if you wanna make something similar to that, it’s pretty easy.
You’re gonna need to do 5 things:
    1. Conceptualize a mix
    2. Set up your equipment and practice that mix
    3. When you’re ready. Set up your camera
    4. Press record on your DJ software, and camera, and turn on screen record on your computer
    5. After recording everything together in a perfect take. Simply import those 3 clips to your editing software and put that mix together.
Now there are 2 things that I like about making video mixes.
Number 1 is that you also practice and get better in DJ’ing.
Recording that perfect set will take a lot of time. Trust me. So the more you repeat your mix over and over again, the better you’ll become at practicing whatever mix or transition you’re trying to show off. Remember, if you can’t do it in front of a camera, how can you even do it in front of an audience ;)
Number 2 is that you make content to better market yourself as a DJ
Growing a fanbase on TH-cam, Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Instagram, and even Facebook is really the new battlefield for DJ’s who wanna get booked and recognized. You see, If you’re not a producer, you gotta show the world how you mix, and what you mix!
So the more you focus on growing your brand through making content, the better off you’ll be in the long run.
So make those mixes and videos!
    Number 2:
    Download FREE Music!
So one of the questions I get the most in my videos is “where do i download my music”. And the short answer to that is, NOW, I download most of my music through DJ record pools like DJ City, and BPM Supreme. You can think of these record pools as libraries of music you can download for a monthly price.
Now the thing is, not everyone here has the means to afford a record pool. Most DJ’s, at least young beginners, can even barely afford DJ equipment, what more a monthly paid subscription service?
So here’s what I did when I was starting out, and when couldn’t steal my Moms credit card.
I….ripped music from TH-cam and Soundcloud. And I’m not proud of it.
So anyway, here’s how I did it back in the day. Now, I’m not encouraging you to do it, I’m just letting you know how…..
    1. Find the track you want, and copy the URL
    2. Google TH-cam Mp3 Ripper, and choose whichever one suits your fancy
    3. Paste your link, and click download.
    4. Feel guilty, because you’re now a pirate.
    Number 3:
    With your new music.
Properly prep them, and you can find a super handy video on how to do just that over here.
    But to summarize it.
Analyze your tracks, beat grid them, cue point the beginning of the track you want to use, and cue point the sections where you want to mix in and out.
Now this is a tedious process, but it’s a good practice to do when you download new stuff.
Because every new track you’ll download and prepare can instantly be used to DJ professionally with!

The 'problem' isn't live streaming, it's the viewers.
I have been a DJ since 1980, and still DJ now.
I want people to listen to the music, and how I play/mix/present a journey of audio delights.
But, 99% of live stream viewers are only interested in what the stream looks like. The DJ's with by far the most viewers, are not very good at actually DJ-ing at all, in fact, some are absolutely fucking terrible.
They simply upfade tracks into one another, and those tracks are all recorded at the same BPM meaning they don't need to beatmatch.
Then these terrible DJ's will pretend to turn every knob on the mixer (while actually not doing anything in reality, the audio doesn't change - it's all for show), and dance around, flirt to the camera, and generally show off.
If you are a 18-22 year old, pretty girl, with big tits, you will get the most viewers !
There are a small number of listeners who don't care what the stream looks like, because they are intelligent enough to actually care about the music.

Indeed... I discovered this once Corona hit and I started watching DJs... I've been doing this for 20 years and actually took a break for the last five or six... I knew controllers had sync but I had no idea that the turntables now are built with a sync button no wonder everybody has four and everybody is a DJ because nobody literally has to learn how to mix... It's pathetic and embarrassing and I'm actually glad that I'm not on the scene anymore I just DJ for me

DJ-ing is a fashion statement these days.
It is so easy to line up beat peaks on a screen, and add a few effects, you don't even need to actually listen to the music anymore, you can mix perfectly with just your eyes.
I miss the days when you had to actually mix with your ears.
And modern DJ's all boast about 'oh it's just the same and you can do more things with software' blah blah no it's not, it's piss easy compared to proper DJ-ing.
If these modern DJ's had to go back to the late 70's early 80's and do great live sets in a sweaty old club with belt drive turntables and real vinyl they would crumble.

If you are a new dj just starting out your most important job is to acquire quality music, not quantity. Your first purchase should be two solid state drives. Buy great music high audio quality. Build a library like you are collecting swords or guns, your tracks are your weapons. Borrow equipment at first. Go to your friends and use his/her equipment. Learn the basics first. You can acquire equipment little by little. New DJs almost always put the cart before the horse, buying equipment before having a highly curated musical library. You should know your music inside and out. You should know how and why certain music works together. You should have a basic understanding of musical theory and song composition. Learn about mixing in key. You are a chef, preparing a 7 course meal. Never do free gigs, you cheapen the craft. Instead, learn your craft by apprenticing under a veteran DJ. If you can’t play a great dinner set at wedding, you won’t understand how to be an opener. Every new DJ wants to play the peak hours, but have never opened up for the headliner. Pay your dues, learn the DJ craft and when you venture out by yourself you can be confident that what you are charging is fair. I don’t need to DJ for money, I DJ because I love it. But we charge because if we don’t we set a bad example, we spoil people into thinking our art is cheap.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Absolutely Chris! There's a method to the madness we call DJing. I do say a good library and basic skills are your foundation; the mixing in key, musical theory, etc. will all work their way in the more you spin, and you'll find that you're using those skills without even thinking later down the road. Thanks for this!

I am experimenting with recording my mixes right now, a possible way to make this process more efficient is to use OBS studio to set up all of your video sources/mixing software into one frame, then recording everything already baked together. Saves a lot of time on the back end editing and allows for some interesting picture-in-picture looks and layering :)

I also Ripped music out from TH-cam and Soundcloud when I was starting which I felt guilty about. I threw away those Ripped music already. What I would suggest is to get Bootleg Packs which are also free and the sound quality is way better. Speaking of Sound Quality, I would recommend an application called "Spek" for you to check the sound quality of those tracks that you got from Bootleg Packs.
After that, I had a Free Trial from BPM Supreme (Yes, They give Free Trials for new potential customers!) I stuck with them for almost a year and now that I have collected a decent amount of music I now buy music from Beatport.

I wanna add something to do this and say you should ALSO do streaming and heres why i think that. I have with a couple of friends a small event with me and another dj for a livestreaming event and in the past few weeks i have been practicing a LOT on new skills like baby scratching, better transistions and tone play mixing and i have become much better because of that. I wanna be better and then show it live on the live stream to show what i have learned and also because it sounds better and it looks better. A live stream event can be a thing to look forward to and have a deadline which means you have a goal for your practice which in turn will motivate you more.

Honestly, there are sites now that give you 320 kB mp3 conversion rates, as long as you know how to get the best audio settings on TH-cam, your tracks will sound perfectly fine in 95% of the situations most people are DJ’ing in, as 95% of your audience will have absolutely no idea/care what the quality is lol

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Most of my songs are done on the spot/raw with a ddj200 I'll use apps like Mixvibes and WEdj for some effects during those moments of live recording but other than that I don't have the patience to sit and use something like flstudio and edit tracks. It's not fun. It's more fun doing everything raw and on the spot like how old school DJs did it. Everything sounds better unplanned. You don't necessarily need a laptop connected. Hell all you just need is a smartphone with Mixvibes and WEdj and a pioneer ddj 200 and your pretty much good to go. That's at least 160 bucks the pioneer mixer alone. You don't necessarily need a high budget.

I know this is an older video, but you can also use Rogue Amoeba's Loopback Audio software to route your Rekordbox output as the "microphone-in" on the Quicktime screencapture. The advantage of this is that it also allows you to use the same technique with Audacity to grab quick samples from your favorite shows or movies. I use it to record video AND audio of my zoom classes for calc and physics so I can watch them on my own time later, only at double the playback speed since those professors talk way too slowly and I don't want to listen to someone chew their words for 3 hours.

Option -F you can control the exact format that comes.

Pedro Estrela too bad TH-cam does some awful audio compression and processing that seriously changes the track, you’ll never get the same thing out it is heavily reprocessed. Phasing issues, compression, frequencies chopped off. You may not hear it on a crappy sound system but play it in a large nightclub and you will ask, “where’s the bass”

Chris Leed thats where you use spek or faking the funk to delete the ones where this actually happens.
Which is a vast minority if you use youtube-dl -F bestaudio

Pedro Estrela there is no way to undo compression that messes with frequencies. I realize there are more “reliable” ways to download tracks. But they are still modified from their original form no matter what due to TH-cams compression algorithms.

    Hey Carlo,
just seen this video. I just sold my RX2 cause I didn't need it anymore and never really got to try it out fully. But I still love getting new music, sorting it and preparing it in iTunes and Rekordbox. Since I never really got the time to DJ, but I don't want to let go of it completely, I would like to get some advice.
Should I buy a DDJ400 for learning scratching, mixing and effects basics later (still got a RB5 license)?
Or should I rather jump to another software and mixer (like Denon Prime Go) and start learning there?
You got the experience. I just felt overwhelmed by all the functionality of the RX2 and wanted to learn everything at once. I bet alot of beginners do the same mistake: I need this effect and that effect. Later we realize: no we don't need this. We need beatmatching, basic understanding of music math and good preperation to make people feel good on the dancefloor. Nothing of that is what the best DJ gear can get us (even with sync).
Prime Go or DDJ400 for learning? Less is more. Be honest with me.

With this mentality: "Later we realize: no we don't need this. We need beatmatching, basic understanding of music math and good preperation to make people feel good on the dancefloor." It will only mean that any DJ controller will do, then. Nothing is wrong about that.
But personally speaking, as a fan of techniques and tricks, I want to work on effects and cover as much as I can with respect to the available features. Followers have different styles and genres. This gives life to my channel - a sense of purpose to teach techniques and tricks. So in my case, the more, the merrier!

What dj pool or resource would you use to find more obscure music like video game soundtracks, old television show tunes, or old international music like Chinese opera? I would really like to find good quality audio resources without having to resort to ripping TH-cam. Thanks for your content! Your videos inspired me to save and purchase a ddj400 to learn a new skill while all this stuff is happening in the world
