Here are the song’s lyrics I can’t decide if Im up or down But this I know I got to be entertained Im always bored, I just can’t see Nevermind I got to be entertained I like to play, I like to win But either way I got to be entertained (Swallowing a pill?), while sitting in a chair Pretending it’s real I got to be entertained I gotta gotta gotta be entertained I gotta gotta gotta be entertained Chasing that elusive thing, oh! Not as easy as you think, no! Boys and girls, its all the same I just want to be entertained Oh, oh, oh.. @@nuclearcatbaby1131 When I was in middle school, when I discovered Oingo Boingo, I was blown away. It was the first band to sound like what my brain felt like. I think that's one of the reasons I still listen to them over a decade later.
Alcoholic Alligators It feels like my brain too. As somebody who wants to be a mathematician-scientist it sounds like it was engineered by a mad music scientist - and as it turns out Danny was really into radiation science when he was a kid, hence all the lyrics alluding to nuclear warfare - the lyric is not “I might have been a nice guy” it’s “I might have been an Einstein” because he literally might have been one, no wonder he was able to write “Weird Science” in mere minutes it’s autobiographical! And the lyrics are very relatable too. He even makes the same weird association of crazy people with payphones that I do in “Cinderella Undercover” and “Whole Day Off”. “Insects” reminds me of my cat’s fleas and how fun it is to pick and squish them. “Nasty Habits” reminds me of the perverted fan fiction I write and also my sister who is also autistic and ADHD but even more so, she was curious about boys and would imagine what kinds of naughty things they did in their alone time and ask them inappropriate questions.
Hearing the development of the guitar riff later to be used in Private Life is just fantastic. All of this channel is fantastic. I think I love you, Boingo Tapes person.
if there was one thing oingo boingo wanted to constantly warn you of, it was the mindless consumption of TV! it works pretty well as an account of someone with something like ADHD, or someone struggling with escapism (or both!). from that view it goes along pretty well with songs like 'i always talk to pictures', 'i'm afraid', and 'private life'. i'm a sucker for those somewhat-mentally-unwell anthems 😅 pretty sure it's just a general commentary on consumerist culture or something of the like, though. of course, escapism is inherently tied into that message, just in a more critical than sympathetic way. if they don't explicitly mention TV in one of the lines, they'll write a song about it (like this and Who Do You Want to Be Today, kinda) or hint at it like in the Nothing Bad Ever Happens to Me music video, with the man played by danny not caring about his family being robbed and kidnapped since he was preoccupied by the TV.
@@GremlinJohnny I related a lot to these themes too, Danny also suggested he probably has ADHD or similr but ‘nobody was diagnosed in those days’ in a podcast couple years ago. Even if he wasnt consciously writing about it at the time I think it definitely comes through in the words and music
Sounds really really similar to teenage monster :3 It also sounds more like Danny than any of the other uploaded recordings which I’m happy about. Thank you! :D
Thanks so much for uploading this! It's nice to hear it at its true speed. I can't wait to see if you have more Lad demos and earlier to upload; all I have is the cruddy cassette copies being passed around. Your copies of all these are great!
Alex Benson We’ve got all the great demos from the Only A Lad tracks coming up next, in about the same quality as this one, plus some more of the unreleased tracks and pre Only A Lad recordings
Oingo Boingo Tapes Do you happen to have the demo version of Open Eyes? I’m just curious because it was part of the Only A Lad demos and I’m wondering why it isn’t included in your uploads of these demos.
Thanks for posting this. I needed a better copy since the one I recorded and enhanced from the 1981 movie, The Longshot, from which it was made for was subpar in quality.
Yeah that's really odd, sometimes you don't really notice when something is sped up until it's slowed to its intended speed. I'm taking a liking to this track now that it sounds more "right" in that sense.
A lot of the older uploads of rare Boingo tracks are high pitched probably because they've been passed around over the years on cheap cassettes and the tape speed differs slightly
Yeah there is only one studio recording of the song that exists as far as I know. This is the original pitch unaffected by tape speed, there are other copies online if you look for it, but usually very poor quality. I'm not pretending this is actually a different version, Ive called it a rough mix because Im pretty sure that's what it is by how it's multitrack recorded, compared to the OAL demos which sound very different.
@@OingoBoingoTapes yeah fair enough more uploads of this version are cropping up lately. This does sound clean but I prefer the higher pitch personally. guess I'm just your average Boingo fan that gets excited with every new upload on TH-cam. I'd love a cleaner version of Remember My Name.
@@Alteredbeast47 Would do anything to find a proper master of Remember My Name! Also I think this just sounds lower energy than what we're used to because you can hear how it's mixed totally flat here, as an unfinished mix and guide vocal. The speeding up of the tape covers that up a bit. But this is the correct pitch of the song and how it appears in the Longshot movie - same backing track interestingly but with vocals recorded 'live' on set in that movie!
Here are the song’s lyrics
I can’t decide if Im up or down
But this I know
I got to be entertained
Im always bored, I just can’t see
Nevermind
I got to be entertained
I like to play, I like to win
But either way
I got to be entertained
(Swallowing a pill?), while sitting in a chair
Pretending it’s real
I got to be entertained
I gotta gotta gotta be entertained
I gotta gotta gotta be entertained
Chasing that elusive thing, oh!
Not as easy as you think, no!
Boys and girls, its all the same
I just want to be entertained
Oh, oh, oh..
I will not be restrained
I’ve got to be entertained
The ultimate distraction, the essence of my action
I might’ve been a nice guy [/an Einstein]
I got to be entertained
I can’t decide if Im up or down
But this I know
I got to be entertained
I gotta gotta gotta be entertained
I gotta gotta gotta be entertained
Im not lazy, not one bit, no!
Life is so hard to forget, oh!
Attention is a subtle art
Hard to tell just where to start
Oh, oh, oh..
I will not be restrained
Got to be entertained
To keep me safely sane
Just keep me entertained
Oh oh oh..
I gotta gotta gotta be entertained
I gotta gotta gotta be entertained
Much love for all of your work. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sounds like a song about his ADHD

To some extent, this song reminds me of "Controller".
I know, right? It's like, this is what you're like after your imagination gets cut out, or something.
Is that Steve Bartek doing the electronic voice?
