THis is just a Scouting Report Adjustment to the Blocker-Mover Offense... it is adjusting to the Formation. UVa's O plays so deep that IF Cuse plays the 2-3 Traditionally they would leave Wide Open Wing 3's. It is almost more of a 1-1-3 Zone look from Syracuse
@@Ball_Talk Thanks. Great Video. All it is missing is the point I made about how a Zone doesn't have to limit itself to its base formation. Defending empty space (other than maybe the GOAL) is not Defense. You have to adjust to the Ball and the Offense in your Zone. BTW there is a TH-cam Coach - Coach Al - who has what he calls the Unbeatable Basketball Defense (dubious name)- and it is a 4-1 Zone. This video makes his one look better than I thought it was... and it already looks pretty good. He came up with it for defending 5-Out and 4 around 1 Offense. If Boeheim was basically running a 4-1 at times... it gives Coach Al extra credibility. He's young. Coaches Youth in Canada mainly.
@MercerKnowsBall I know who you are talking about and I haven't looked at in a while but I thought it was a 1- 4 and his 1 was covering a crazy amount of space up front. Now I could be wrong and I can go find it in my G-drive somewhere but like most people I was curious about " the unbeatable basketball defense . " If teams can't pass either option works, ha. My defense of choice is the match up zone ( the Ryan McCarthy Amoeba version) . Like you said, Adjust to the ball and the Offense. I've had low skill level teams in the past , and the match up zone has kept us in the game against far better teams.

BTW I HATE the Name he gave it. But if you face 5-Out all the time I could see running it. But yes. LOL. LOTS of Defenses can beat BAD OFFENSE. At my last Coaching job we were often Top 5 or Top 10 Defense in the State and we ran both a 1-3-1 and a Trapping 2-3 Zone with just a little Man sprinkled in. But once we became KNOWN as a 1-3-1 team we also added the 1-1-3 Amoeba (TARK) and a BLOB Defense based on our 1-3-1. Finished 3rd in the State that year. And even though we had kids that KILLED IT from 3 during AAU they couldn't make ANYTHING all Basketball Season. But out DEFENSE carried us everyday. Most teams wanted nothing to do with us. It was our best team ever. Had 1 girl go NAIA, 1 go D3 and a JR on that team that also went NAIA and a 2 Soph from that team - 1 just signed NAIA and 1 D3. Plus had 2 Soccer Players on the team that BOTH signed for NAIA Soccer. We were SMALL but we could DEFEND.
Really glad you posted this video. I am looking to break in as a Head Coach. And I want to remain a ZONE Coach (at least for 50% of possessions depending on personnel). But I have kinda settled on using the Blocker-Mover as part of my CORE Offense. It was good to see how Boeheim adjusted to that Offense and how Bennet adjusted to this wrinkle.
