- Rookie Card Rankings is a series where I take a player and rank their rookie cards from worst to best. This week we will be looking at Shohei Ohtani.
Shohei Ohtani has always had a lot of expectations on his plate ever since he come over from Japan. He has battled through injuries and down years and now he finally has put it all together! Ohtani currently leads the league in home runs and is pitching at a 2.00 ERA pace. Both of those numbers are insane for a player individually, but they are godly being done by the same player. The one thing that isn't as awesome as Shohei Ohtani are his rookie cards. Topps made it very confusing on which rookies to collect. In this video I will do my best to help you know what cards to target!

Question for you, I am a Red Sox fan but my favorite player outside of the Red Sox is Arenado. I know you’re a fan of his obviously. Was wondering you’re opinion on picking up his stuff now. Everyone doubted he could put up the same numbers outside of Colorado, and yet, here he is top 15 in every major category while being the best defensive player. Yet his prices are still low, I just picked up a rookie on card auto, if you want to see it it’s in my most recent video. So while I’m picking him up, I’m wondering your opinion being a Colorado fan you know Nolan better than most.
Everyone says WAR WAR WAR and I get it, it takes into account every aspect of the game. But his offensive and defense to me put him as the second best player in baseball. Yet everyone throws out all the young guns as next up to trout.. Soto, Acuna, Tatis, etc. I love all those guys, just don’t see why everyone hates on Nolan.

Topps angels team set rc is the hidden gem . It looks like opening day BUT no opening day logo on it. Print run has to be SMALL . Plus it was released same time as flagship series 1 .

Good and informative stuff. Although it should be noted that some of these cards had already climbed up (still climbing actually) since last night's game where he hit another HR. Not your fault though as I understand that it's hard to keep up with someone who's still on a hot streak. For instance, both Topps Chrome and Chrome Update Ohtani cards are now reaching $80+ raw. And his Topps Heritage is now selling up to $25 raw. Depending on how well he pitches later tonight, it's entirely possible his cards could still go up considerably higher.
Can you do Vlad Jr, Aaron Judge, or Cody Bellinger? Great videos compared to the cardboard sports checklists.

Don’t sleep on Kyle tucker 2015 bowman chrome super cheap in comparisons to other players . He has 10 hrs and 29 rbi and runs. Just needs to get his average up
Tucker has a lot of upside. he has 1.2 bwar with a slower start. I think he could be a good buy!

He is a great guy to be heavily invested in! That is a tough question, if he stays healthy he has a real shot at the MVP and if he wins that I think his cards have a lot more room to move. At the same time though, he has had multiple injuries in the past which may be worrisome. It all depends on your risk appetite! Let me know what you decide!
Both. Take a tiered approach. Sell a few at this current market rate and sit and see what happens. If he wins the HR Derby he might see a slight bump again.. sell more and sit on the rest. He is the front runner for MVP, which would be another bump. At that point I would sell all but 2... one to keep for my PC and one to hold just in case his prices one day enter Trout territory... you'll want to sell one then but still have the PC one. That's my approach to my Ohtani collection. I collected him primarily this past winter at pennies on the current dollar. I have a SGC Gold Label I'm keeping for my own collection. I've already sold 8 others so far and am planning to sell the rest when the market adjusts.

Is there a good reason why update tends to outperform the regular season product? Is it just a print run thing?
The two biggest reasons (in my opinion) are:
1). There used to be less produced. Especially in Topps Chrome Update vs Topps Chrome
2). That a lot of big rookies have their flagship rookies in Update so people are drawn to the name. That list includes Pujols (traded), Scherzer, Kershaw, Trout, Goldschmidt, Altuve, Arenado, Yelich, Cole, Betts, DeGrom, Lindor, Story, Bellinger, Acuna, Soto, Torres, and more.
I think people just like the modern popularity and equate update with value!
Call me a crazy, but my preference is the 2018 Bowman Sterling.
One thing that irks me with the Bowman Chrome and the Topps Finest (which have the best pictures of him batting) is that those swings are his old swing in Japan. He stop lifting his right leg off ground when he started playing in MLB. The debut card is a better picture for this reason but I wish it doesn't have the debut text and dates on it, making it feel more like a subset card then base.
Anyway you could make an update vid on this it would be super cool

I'm surprised i didn't see the transcendent RC card on this list
I debated it, but it was such a high end release (20k a box) that it is out of the realm of possibility for most people. I was doing my best to keep it as a mainstream list that people could target. Fantastic card though!!

i think the jury is still out on a lot his stuff. especially with the pitching vs hitting stuff. the RD thing is just fluff from outside of baseball money. the bowman pitching should probably be on there though (the non japanese uni) since it's technically his first american bowman.
The jury is definitely still out, but Topps didn't do themselves any favors by making two different flagship rookies haha I didn't include the Bowman pitching card because a PSA 10 at the time was only $100 which is much lower than any of these cards. People really don't like Bowman paper rookies for some reason. I think it could come into light some day though since it is technically the image that matches his Bowman Chrome Autograph!

The Topps 2018 Archives PSA 10 card #50 should make the cut they sell over 200.00
When I made this video compas were around $95-$115. I love the Topps Archives set (I think it is wildly undervalued), but to be consistent I decided to go with those which were worth more at the time.
