      Great reaction video Mary Cherry. With regards to the prequels pretty much everyone didn't really like them when they first came out, for various reasons such as the CGI special effects having a plastic look/sheen and feel to them, that the first two films didn't have many characters that were familiar, and the dialogue being poor. However in recent years people have come to appreciate them more especially since the release of the sequels (7-9)

      She literally says, in a surprised way, "Somehow, I've always known". Like, it's occurring to her in that moment that she's always felt a connection with Luke. That's probably why she didn't pursue a romantic relationship with him. Neither did he, for that matter.

      @@BLSFL_HAZE Also, you can usually tell if there's some chemistry with a kiss. After that one where she tried to piss off Han, anytime afterwards it always looked very familial. Vader died because the emperor’s lightning messed up his life support suit. Putting the helmet back on wouldn’t have saved him. Like he said “Nothing can stop that now”

    • @charlesedwards2856
      @charlesedwards2856 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Not to bring out the big guns of geek lore, but Vader actually chose to die. He only told Luke it couldn’t be avoided because Luke would never have willingly removed his mask.
      In the time between him killing the Emperor and dying on the ramp of the ship, Obi Wan’s ghost appeared to him and taught him how to become a force ghost because he knew Anakin would rather die than have people know he actually survived the purge and committed the heinous acts he did as Vader.

      Jon Mercano I’m now wondering if I got myself mixed up when the SW Theory page on here was doing something about it, but I know I heard it. It might be from the newest Vader book, but perhaps the guy that does it only speculated that. It’s honestly been awhile since I heard it. I should have double-checked, but he has so many Bader videos that it would’ve taken me days to find.

There are people whose wedding photos have them clearly dressed to be those characters getting married, which must be odd now that almost everyone knows those two are related. You’re absolutely right, it IS a weird beard, and the reason it is, is because it is a hurriedly improvised fake.
    The actor who read for the part did so with a beard. He was given the role, and filming day he showed up... with no beard. The people from Lucasfilm were upset. He needed a beard, they said. The actor was baffled. There was nothing in the script or role that called for the character to have a beard... he wasn’t described in the script at all except in very general terms. Why did he need one?
    “Because we’ve already made your action figure for the toy line based on your appearance at the reading, and it has a beard!”
    So they had the makeup guys improvise a fake beard on him... which is why it looks so strange.

    *NO SPOILERS:*
    When it comes to the prequel trilogy...they're just...different. They have a different aesthetic, visually. They're a little denser plot-wise, so there is a lot more nuance and subtlety to keep track of and appreciate. There is more CGI and green screen as compared to the original trilogy, but keep in mind that's probably because CGI wasn't really a "thing" in the late 70s-80s. Some people don't like them, but most "younger" people tend to be perfectly entertained by them, so I imagine you will like them all the same. It's definitely a more tragic arc, there will be some tough things to witness that happen to various characters. But there will also be a lot of fun surprises as well. The most polarizing character is Jar-Jar Binks (Actually, "polarizing" suggests that people are split, but in fact he's pretty universally hated lol). Anyway, looking forward to your reactions to those. I've already subscribed, take care!

    A few things:
    1. Leia didn't mean that she knew she was Luke's sister. She sensed that they were connected, but didn't know exactly how until Luke told her.
    2. Putting Vader's helmet back on wouldn't have saved him. The Emperor's lightning damaged his suit, which works as a life-support system that he needs due to injuries he got in the past (the Prequels expand upon this).

    • @charlesedwards2856

      #2 is slightly incorrect. Somewhere in the multitudes of novels it explains that Vader chose to die rather than live and be revealed to the galaxy as Anakin. People would never trust him after what he had done. He told Luke keeping the mask on wouldn’t help because he knew Luke wouldn’t remove it if he thought there was hope. In the short time between killing the emperor and dying on the ramp of the shuttle, Obi Wan spoke to him and taught him how to preserve himself as a force ghost, thus how he was able to do it when he hadn’t ever been taught on screen.

    Plainly the "Luke and Leia are siblings" reveal wasn't really planned out from the start. Nor was it even planned that this was going to be a trilogy and not an ongoing series with even more parts. But by the third movie, George Lucas felt burnt out (and was also in the middle of a divorce), so he decided to just wrap up the Star Wars story for now. However, in the previous movie they had let Yoda say that "there is another" than Luke that might save the galaxy. What was originally planned was that Luke would eventually discover that he had a long-lost sister ("Nellith" was one possible name for her), so that she was the "other" Yoda spoke of. However, when they decided that Return of the Jedi was to be the last movie for now, there was no time to go into any elaborate plots regarding Luke's sister. To explain Yoda's remark about "another", it was decided that none other than LEIA was in fact Luke's sister!
    In hindsight, that made some kissing scenes in the previous two movies a bit awkward, though those were never any really passionate kisses. Leia gives Luke a little peck "for luck" on the first Death Star, she kisses him wholly and solely to annoy Han "Entitled Jerk" Solo in the following film, and also gives him a little "get well" peck after Vader has chopped off his hand. And that is all, really. It was only the first movie that hinted that Luke was crushing just a little on Leia. Already by Empire Strikes Back he seems to accept that Han and Leia are drifting towards one another (even if they are both screaming and kicking, as it were), and Luke respects that.

      IIRC, the original 1974 draft for "The Star Wars" did reference Jedi twins, but they weren't Luke and Leia. In that original draft, Luke was a 60 year old rebel general and Vader was a 60 year old Imperial general. Han Solo was originally a green skinned alien and R2-D2 was capable of human speech.

    Femi Taylor who played Oola in the theatrical release of Return of the Jedi, returned 14 years later remarkably looking the same as she did during filming of her scenes for Return of the Jedi, to record a brief sequence of new footage for the 1997 special edition, Darth Vader’s screams of the word no were added for the 2011 blu-ray special edition, if you remember back to Jabba’s appearance in a New Hope, you might have noticed that he’s a digital effect in that sequence, originally that sequence wasn’t in the movie, since it was cut out, and in it’s place Lucas used the sequence with Greedo, for the 1997 special edition Lucas had the original human actor for Jabba digitally replaced with a CGI turd, that was later revised for the 2004 special edition release to be more in-line with Jabba’s appearance in Return of the Jedi, Greedo’s death was also a victim of special edition changes, from the Disney plus version adding in dialogue in Huttese for Greedo which essentially translates to Greedo saying that this would be Solo’s end, before Greedo fires, to Lucas changing the footage to have Greedo fire first in the 1997 special edition, and then later changing it to have them fire at roughly the same time in the 2004 and 2011 special editions.

    George Lucas has said multiple times the Emperor is Satan in this story, whispering into Vader and controlling him. It's what makes the Original Trilogy so good. When we first meet Vader, we see him as the Main Bad guy and the Villain. When look fights him the first time, he believes Vader is the main villain and wants to defeat him, which ends up with Luke losing the fight and a hand. When Luke finally learns the truth of who Vader is, he grows compassion for Vader. something Vader rarely received in his life. Vader knows the Emperor intends to replace him with Luke, it is the way of the Dark Side. By Luke choosing to not kill Vader when he can, throwing his weapon, he proves the Emperor wrong and for the first time in forever, Vader realizes someone loves him, that HIS SON loves him. This is something the Dark Side cannot understand. It is what changes Vader to overthrow the Emperor, saving his son and sacrificing himself.

  • @shotarohidari7417
    @shotarohidari7417 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The emperor wanted Luke as his apprentice to get the powerful apprentice he has wanted. Vader was it but his injuries (see the prequels) hamper his potential. Luke except for his mechanical hand still retains almost the full potential his father does. Example is vader cannot risk using force lightning as it will damage him. His more sluggish movements due to his mechanics.
    As for Leia and Luke being related, we actually got a hint that Leia was at least force sensitive in Episode V. When luke reached out to her via the Force on Bespin and she heard him. Only a Force Sensitive could have sensed that. Fans have since speculated that their blood relation is what allowed leia to hear him even though she was untrained.
    I truthfully do not know where in production of episode V or VI that lucas decided to make them siblings. But I believe it is after episode V was done.
    As for the infamous metal bikini, The late Carrie Fisher has stated that if she stood a certain way, the cast and crew had um... unhindered view and she hated the costume but had come to hail it as a sign that women are powerful, even though society does things like that to them. I personally know a few who cosplay that costume and lemme tell you they are the most strongest women I know both physically and mentally.
    Enjoy the prequels.

    • @MsMaggyW
      @MsMaggyW 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      George Lucas' official stance has always been that everybody is Force-sensitive, but on differing levels. I think the Leia twist was purely thought of for ep 6 but because she felt close to Luke, and because Luke was trying hard to reach out to her, she was able to sense him.

    A common criticism of Leia in this movie aside from the slave bikini is how she turns to emotional mush. That was the whole point of her arc: transitioning from an idealistic princess to a more mature feminine young woman. But Leia’s femininity and vulnerability - her homeworld being destroyed, admitting her feelings to Han before he is frozen, being Jabba’s slave, finding out the shocking family revelation - doesn’t take away from her fighting spirit at all. This trilogy will always have a special place in my heart. He can't be telling the truth." My six year old brain could not comprehend it and I think it was the first time in my life that I felt challenged by a story on a moral level. Things weren't just black and white. Then the final episode stuck the landing for me. It is incredible how every reactor goes from calling Luke naive for believing he can save his father to shouting at Darth Vader to save his son. That is a sign of how effectively simple and subtle the redemption arc was. Lucas always stated how this trilogy was the tragedy of Darth Vader, and as far as I'm concerned, this last film is the reason that the twist in Empire is so well remembered

    • @MisterPrince01
      @MisterPrince01 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah people claim he's such a genius and that he planned everything, which isn't the case. I don't think it's a big deal. The sequels suffered way more from not being planned through.

      Yeah even reading Lucus' claims on other things over the years, he's contradicted himself many times.

    It's far more surprising first learning Luke and Leia are siblings in Episode III. I don't know why so many people still think otherwise. : P
    And this whole movie has much more dramatic impact if you've seen all 5 movies before it and actually saw Anakin/Vader's full arc and the full scale of the Emperor's machinations, IMO. But what's done is done.

    I have found in watching these first time reactions to Star Wars that most people who are watching these right in a row usually like the prequels as much and sometimes a little more (at least episodes 2 and 3) because of the upgrade in CGI quality. There are lots to love about the prequels (at least episodes 2 and 3) and if you get the time I would suggest watching the Clone Wars TV series, even if you don't react here to it. Your love for Obi-wan, Anakin and others you have yet to meet will grow exponentially!

    The one thing that I do like is that at the very end it shows Anakin standing along side Yoda and Obi-Wan as Force ghosts which means that Luke and Leia still have a chance to get to know their Father to some extent.

    I'm glad you enjoyed your experience with this trilogy. The Skywalker Saga constitutes a modern mythology for three generations.
    The prequels are hugely ambitious but overly reliant on CGI which results in stiff performances from a cast that otherwise would have been magnificent. The romance at its heart also strains credibility. However, many who grew up with that trilogy love it even more than the classic trilogy. Judge for yourself.
    I love Jabba! In Mel Brooks' parody, Spaceballs, he's called Pizza the Hutt! Lol. He always reminded me of Sydney Greenstreet's character from "Casablanca". The Hutts are the most powerful criminal cartel in the Star Wars galaxy controlling a vast portion of space outside the jurisdiction of the Core government be it Republic or Empire. They always represent a third power in the galaxy. Jabba's palace and lifestyle is modeled after Western concepts about the exoticism, voluptuousness, decadence and opulence of the cultures of the Orient during medieval and early modern history: Arab Caliphs, Persian Satraps, Ottoman Sultans, Tatar Emirs, Mongol Khans, Russian Czars and Indian Rajas. The Sail Barge is, of course, modeled after piratical swashbucklers; Jabba even has Luke walk the plank!
    Leia's barely-there slave outfit
    is one of her signature looks and is a very popular cosplay that was famously made light of on the American TV show "Friends". Many impressionable pre-pubescent boys sprouted hair on their chest at the sight of her and carried a torch for the Princess well into adulthood! Lol.
    Boba Fett, the dreaded bounty hunter who delivered Han to Jabba and fell into the Sarlacc Pit is rumored to have survived and may be making an appearance in a future live-action project!
    Warwick Davis, who played the Ewok named Wicket who first comes upon Leia, has shown up in every Star Wars movie in a cameo! He is the franchise's lucky penny!
    The fish-headed Mon Calamari Rebel Admiral Ackbar is a fan favorite and his delivery of the line, "It's a trap!", became a popular meme to this day!
    The Rebel pilot Wedge Antilles, played by Denis Lawson, survived two Death Star assaults and the battle on the ice world of Hoth! In the Expanded Universe that is no longer canonical, he became a legendary flight instructor for the New Republic's Flight Academy.
    Femi Taylor, who played the Twi'lek dancer Jabba feeds to his pet Rancor, returned for dancing reshoots inserted into that horrific musical number performed by Jabba's house band. Despite it being something like 15 years later, her physique was unchanged and matched the old footage seamlessly!
    The CGI tweaks to the remastered Return of the Jedi are the most egregious in the series including that dreadful musical number and a young Anakin Force ghost. However, you do get a glimpse of the city-planet Coruscant during the galaxy-wide celebration. Coruscant figures prominently in the prequels and was most definitely inspired by Isaac Asimov's capital world of Trantor from the Foundation series.

    I'm about as young a veteran of the original tribology can be and still have memories of seeing the first one in 1977. In the lead up to the release of ROTJ in the U.S. Lucas finally allowed the original to be shown on cable television. The three year wait and the finished product, culminating in Annakin Skywalker's redemption, made this the best cinematic experience I ever had.
    Rumor had it that Leia is Luke's sister. Don't how it got out, but it apparently did. So it wasn't a surprise to me and I assume most viewers of the original theatrical release.
    Ian MacDiarmid was very good as Emperor Palpatine, especially since he was not an old man at the time. I've always liked the scene of Palpatine's arrival at the Death Star. At this point we don't know anything about him. All we have seen of him is a holographic image of a different actor in the previous film. So it comes as a shock for me to see Darth Vader kneeling before this small, decrepit looking old man who walks off of his shuttle with a cane. It's when we see him lash out at Luke with lightening that we see why the disabled Vader can't fight him. Here we have the foundation of a compelling character whose rise to absolute power is central to prequel trilogy.

    You have to watch the greatest Star Wars movie ever.
    Star Wars the Holiday Special.
    It has most of the original cast: Mark Hamill (luke), Harrison Ford (Han), Carrie Fisher (Leia), Peter Mahew (Chewbacca), Anthony Daniels (C3PO) and the voice of Darth Vader (James Earl Jones).
    It also has what nobody asked for, a drama about Chewie's familly with his creepy dad jerking off on a virtual machine in the middle of the living room, short sketches that are supposed to be comedy (but are anything but), a carrie fisher that looks stoned out of her mind and mark hamill with so much make up that he makes competition to barbie.
    It is a train wreck but you cannot call yourself a star wars fan without watching at least once in your life a thing so hideous that harrison ford denied for decades even starring in it and george lucas said of it: "If I had time and a sledge hammer, i'd track down every bootleg copy of it and smash it"
    It was showed once on tv in november 78 and never showed again, nor issued in any other official media.
    Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

    The hero of the Star Wars story is Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader). When I say that it is a literary reference. Anakin is the character that changes and has to have some type of redemption in the end. Luke is a minor hero in the whole story but this is all about Anakin. It really should have been put down as a book before the screen. That would have given Lucas more to pull on if the story were fleshed out a little more. The prequels will muddy up the story and the whole picture will not flow as well. The new movies will muddy it farther and should be taken as story extensions.

    No, Luke couldn't just put the mask back on. Remember that big lightning show when Vader threw The Emperor over the rails? That little stunt fatally damaged Vader's life support systems. It would've required the Star Wars equivalent of a rapid response medical team and a fully equipped ER to save Vader, and that just wasn't happening with the Death Star in tatters and about to blow up.
