    Hi and thank you for this video tip; I noticed that the e-brake cable was already disconnected from the parking brake actuator lever and there was no tension around the spring, which made it easy to access the retainer clip where you placed the thumb-screw hose clamp over. My question to you is, How do you release the tension on that spring to gain access to the plastic retainer clip in the first place?

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on the spring setup but I've had good luck with using some vice grips to pinch a few coils and give you space for the hose clamp if it uses a bigger spring (1" diameter or so.) For the smaller springs that are tight to the cable, I pull the spring back a little and clamp the vice grips on the cable itself to act like a stop for the spring. Hope that helps!

      @@WebWheeler You're welcome! Yes, I found the tool I was looking for; the OTC6722 brake spring locking plier. I ordered it earlier today through tooldiscounter for about $65.00. Once I receive the tool and I'm able to compress the spring, I intend on using a heavy-duty plastic cable tie (through the spring), as a secondary safety measure, in case the tool falls off. I don't feel like losing any fingers.

    Unfortunately, this trick didn’t work for me. From what I can tell, there is a rubber boot behind the parking brake cable retention clip which prevents me from being able to compress the retention clip enough to get it through the hole. And I cannot get the rubber boot out from behind the retention clip. So I am at a complete standstill.

    I didn’t need this hack 5 years ago when it was originally posted, but I SURE NEEDED IT TODAY! Initially I had trouble with it, but I found I actually put the hose clamp TOO CLOSE to the bracket. There was no room for the cable to slide out. By moving the clamp 5 or so millimeters away I had enough room to slide it out far enough that I could remove the clamp and pull the cable the rest of the way out. Thanks a TON for this!!

    Thank you for posting the video! I spent the last two days cursing the engineer who decided that the emergency brake needed a 3-prong retaining clip to keep the cable in place. Upon recommendation, I purchased the Lisle Parking Brake Cable Remover 40750 to "assist" in removing the cable and it was useless. After watching this video, I purchased the #4 hose clamp and "thin" vice grips and had the retaining clip off in 5 minutes. The trick is getting the clamp in place to hold down all three pins and using a screwdriver with a very wide tip and using that as a pry, then using vice grips to hold your ground as your getting the clip to pass through the retaining ring. The vice grip was the perfect tool in keeping the retaining clip from sliding back and "relocking".

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can't disconnect the cable from anywhere else to relieve the tension, you might not be able to- Some vehicles will have a captive spring that you can relieve the tension on. In those cases I've clamped vice grips on the cable to hold the spring back or compressed the spring and tied it up with some bailing wire while I release the retainer. Hope that helps. Good luck!
