    Best explanation... by far.~ of inoculating shitake mushrooms. I know this was made years ago but hopefully the creators of this video will still see this comment. Thank You!

    Have you guys ever used gray birch for shiitake inoculation? Betula populifolia. I am surrounded by them on my property. Very few paper birch. Wanna cut my trees soon. Thks for any advise. Cheers.

    How many grow cyles will each log last before it's rotted through?

    would it be easier to use the plugs, rather than the spawn you used?

    • @tomsuica8731
      @tomsuica8731 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4 less than 100 logs it's ideal to use plugs but sawdust spawn is cheaper long-term imagine the cost of dowels that have to be colonized first as opposed to just having cheap sawdust which is available for almost for free dowels have to actually be cut then shaped around and they have a special spiral cut it's a lot that goes into these dolls that's why they are so expensive compared to sawdust spawn

    What time of the year do shiitake mushrooms occur? Are they an autumn mushroom like chanterelles?

    • @tomsuica8731
      @tomsuica8731 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the wild who knows Google it and watch wild shiitake growth documentary but most of the time people are dipping their logs and water forcing them to fruit so it's funny if you do it in the summer you get weird stocking mushrooms that obviously grew and great heat and low humidity should do it in the fall time they're completely different it's so interesting to see the way the mushroom grows through nature at the time that you induce fruiting

    Try using Timble spawn when innoculating logs. This is the easiest methode and no use of expensive Bee-wax. Also you don't need to buy expensive Okuda equipment.
    It's for sale in USA, Canada and also in Europe.

    do you soak again after the resting period?

    • @cornellsmallfarms
      @cornellsmallfarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, typically 7 - 8 weeks rest, then soak again. Check out our shiitake guide under "outdoor" items at www.CornellMushrooms.org

    Why did you use a grinder instead of a drill to make the holes?

    • @cornellsmallfarms
      @cornellsmallfarms  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's a special bit that goes on a grinder and always drills to the same depth, it just makes the process faster. On a small scale a drill is fine, on a large scale definitely consider the grinder set up

    Would it be cool to inoculate now? In the winter

    • @tomsuica8731
      @tomsuica8731 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may want to let your logs rest for two weeks and then inoculate them but yes in the winter is when all the sugars are up in the wood that's the best I'm actually to cut your wood down but identifier trees before the winter time so you know what trees are what

    • @tomsuica8731
      @tomsuica8731 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you can pretty much grow in all Hardwoods obviously you're going to get different results for different types of woods and different types of Spawn but for the most part evergreens are no good

    Because shiitake is a saprophytic fungus and won't colonize living wood, conventional advice is to let the logs age a minimum of two weeks prior to innoculation.

    • @Stegeln
      @Stegeln 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmmm I've heard the exact opposite as well - that if you wait for more than a couple of weeks, other saprophytic species might already have inoculated the logs on their own? Total noob here, any guidance would be much appreciated!

    • @TheFarmacySeedsNetwork
      @TheFarmacySeedsNetwork 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Stegeln Paul Stamtez says 2 weeks is optimum too. His explanation was that the tress have anti-fungal compounds (that prevents them from being attacked while alive) and that breaks down after about 2 weeks so that is the ideal time to inoculate.

    Can I grow psilocybe subaeruginosa using this method

    • @AkamiChannel
      @AkamiChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      doubtful. I don't think that grows on trees.

    • @tomsuica8731
      @tomsuica8731 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Incorrect enough doubtful in fact you likely could grow it in this method it does grow on wood chips sometimes and Evergreen plantations amongst the trees are so common in South Australia granted you could get a clean Spore print tissue sample on some agar will extract clean tissue sample direct inoculate to clean spawn and then get it to proliferate and some spawn you very easily could inoculate logs and grow it in that method the answer is yes you can I can't speak for yields but you will likely get some likely you'll be getting Royal flushes if you figure out how to poop get it just so wet or just leave it out and watch it it will be fruiting throughout the year when it's it's time if you want some clues about what might make it fruit look at what people are saying in the forms in South Australia in that time of year and see what the talk of the weather is or check out weather forecasts known areas and see what it takes to make them fruit and then emulate that also go to the shroomery.org and get any guidance you may need

    Half a pound per log! that is really low man even if it does produce for years. It's gonna take like 5 years just to get 100% biological efficiency.
