My 19 year old self had a fully wrc wide arched body kitted mk5 escort.... with a 1.6cvh engine in it. I still loved it.

At least it was a petrol :D Once I saw a rally "replica" with the 1.8 diesel. And not a turbodiesel... just a freaking n/a diesel :D They are pretty good on fuel efficiency, but it was a bit funny tbh

In person this is so much more impressive.... it sounds like a thunderstorm. I usually watch WRC live here in portugal, and some classics from the 90's also go for a run, and without any doubt, the Escorts are the louder! They are actually much louder than any modern WRC car.

I absolutely agree but the cancer was hardly exclusive to the world rally cars. Every motorsport category has been less & less relevant with every new rule change, motorsport is dying a slow, cruel death, that probably started back in the late '60's when someone first said 'hang on, is this safe'. No dipshits, it wasn't safe. And we do like to have roadcar equivalents that we can drive like a bat out of hell on public roads regardless of what society thinks of it. When the great Stirling Moss was asked about modern motorsports appeal or lack thereof he responsed plainly: "Why would I pay to witness a tightrope act, that is only three feet off the ground?"

Italian engineers in the 80s: we shall remove the turbo-lag by installing a supercharger that will consume about 50HP, but will pump up the engine in low and mid revs.
French engineers in the 80s: Je shalle 'emove the turbo-lag en installant comresseur electricque.
90's engineers: just throw a lot of fuel into the engine when throttle's shut, it'l get into hot exhaust, explode and propell the turbine!

WRC is what killed rallying in long run. As long as the strongest one was Group A, manufacturers were making a lot of helluva good sports that were a good base for rally cars, their owners felt more connected with motorsport and more authentic. Just compare, how many manufacturers competed when the top group was group A, top class was A8, and there was no WRC, to what has been happening in WRC for the last 15 years.
