This is a tragic love story. Deborah was the only person who ever called him by his real name "David Aaronson", because she sees Noodles for the young, innocent boy she fell in love with. I think that Noodles was the product of his environment. He was intelligent and motivated by his impoverished, immigrant background to make a fortune. His talent and ambition happened to coincide with the beginnings of prohibition. He also was willing to work as an associate under Bugsy, but only decided to challenge him once Max interjected and formed an alliance with Noodles. Even though Noodles still made an effort to choose Deborah, over the gangster lifestyle, by telling Max he would rather spend the day with Deborah than stealing with his partner in crime, he is still sucked into the game. Bugsy pays them a visit and beats them to a pulp, serving as a barrier between Noodles and his childhood sweetheart.
This is one of the most memorable scenes along with the scene where she reasds the song of songs, and the one Dominick falls wounded by a shot from Patsy, and he said "Noodles, I slipped".... Sad sad.

What really makes this scene uncomfortable (even before what happens later) is that Noodles is dominating the conversation and Deborah has this uncomfortable expression on her face. Plus, the fact that Noodles doesn’t even seem to realize it until she tells him she’s off to Hollywood just adds to how uncomfortable the scene is. Great acting by Robert De Niro and Elizabeth McGovern.
Sergio leone ,ennio morricone the masters of once upon a time in America they did make many films together but saved the best till last a true masterpiece god bless them both
@@saraandstuartshannon2160 True . . but in this case i think that sergio leone wanted to portray the character as an ambitious woman that doesn't care about love n staff which has its part to play in the one of the ending. Also him being a hateful asshole has its part in the other possible ending. Additionally I want to express that this was one of the most terrifying rape scenes I have seen in a movie.
Morricone's score is moving, in this scene, as in several in this film, it moves me. Many times I wished I had the power to travel back in time and could have lived at the time of its release, as well as having the ability for this film to receive the success it deserved at that time. But today in 2024, forty years after its premiere, I see that all of this is unnecessary, nothing can change what this masterpiece means to me.
What never ceases to puzzle me after this scene is that why didn't the cab driver stop the car earlier? She was screaming and begging for Noodles to stop in the backseat for at least two minutes.
I don't think you're meant to have sympathy for Noodles after he rapes Deborah. He was no better than his friends or their enemies when it comes to casual misogyny. The way the movie builds to this scene is brilliant: you see Noodles' life cycle up until that point and have sympathy for him. And then he goes and flushes it all down the toilet. This makes the audience feel almost as violated and betrayed as Deborah. The rape scene itself is insanely hard to watch because of this.
@@Solid_Snake99 I felt bad INITIALLY when she said she was going to Hollywood but not after he raped her. Nothing excuses for that. Noodles had some traits of misogyny in his childhood as well but he didn't cross the line until here.
My interpretation is that the entire date including the scene in the car are all part of the opium dream. The date is too perfect almost in a corny way that I as a man would imagine a dream date. Her reactions make me feel like she is just a reflection of his desires and fears, and when he ‘takes’ her and she resists, that is his own mind struggling with feelings of rejection, because he knows he is a punk. Even in his dreams he can’t have her. The driver doesn’t even speak and just leaves him alone in a dreamlike suburb. The driver is a reflection of his psyche judging what he has just done.
Deborah never loved Noodles. She liked the attention that he gave her. Deborah was right he is a hood, but she still played with his heart and gave him hope. He dreamed of being with her and loving her for years, and that final kiss that she gave him he snapped. She crushed his heart and he reacted the way a hood does, with violence. Such a masterclass in storytelling.
