What a great, down-to-earth guy! I saw "ET" at 9 years old, and was never more terrified than at the beginning of the film when Eliott is about to see ET for the first time, and I bawled my eyes out crying near the end when Eliott was crying over ET in the laboratory - it was the combination of John Williams' score and Henry Thomas' amazing acting that evoked so many emotions, and I only found out about his audition for that film just recently!
HopeUnquenchable And Spielberg's cutting is superb^ in combination with what you mentioned also. I saw the film when I was 6 or 7 and it also delighted and scared the shit out of me equally. Watching it years later it's even more exhilarating imo. A very special film.
