You can always tell it's Bill Bruford playing without actually knowing it's definitely him. Let me give you an example. Years ago after King Crimson split up, there was an musical advert for Barrs soft drinks (the Irn Bru specialists in Scotland). The advert was on the tv all the time, and l suggested to my "Yes" loving mates that it was in fact Bill Bruford playing drums on that musical tv advert. They told me that l was nuts, and that was never Bruford, but l knew his style, having bought all the Yes and Crim albums. Years later, Bill told a story somewhere that after Crimson split in '74, he started doing soft drinks jingles and session work to make his living. To this day, l don't know if l,m right or wrong about that one, but l,ll bet l,m right. Recognise his time signatures anywhere.

I over the years have become sort of bored with most drum solos. There's usually nothing personal or unique with a lot of drummers to me. A lot of them just sound the same and hardly ever change up their solos. Not Mr Bruford. His style and his solos were always so unique and so compelling to watch and listen to along with his brilliant drumming overall. He certainly was one of a kind with his own distinct style and sound. You always could tell when Bill was playing w/o seeing or knowing he was playing. He was my favorite drummer that for me never failed preform brilliantly and I've seen so many times live over the years and much more than any other performer. Every band he played in became some of my favorite bands of all times. What a brilliant musical legacy and great memories he's left us over the years. I wish him a really happy and well deserved retirement. Thank you so much Mr Bruford for brilliantly entertaining me and influencing me to venture and explore other musical adventures.

The drum solo had become a rock music cliché by the mid-1970s, with the most frequent example of percussion tedium being the three-minute take from In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (IAGDV) performed Ron Bushy, the original drummer of Iron Butterfly. Drum-solo classics also include Toad by Ginger Baker of Cream, Moby Dick by John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and the short but highly influential Wipe Out by Ron Wilson of The Surfaris. What made IAGDV the kernel of the cliché was its connection to psychedelic rock, an easily dismissed sub-genre which gave way to hard rock, proto-punk, early metal, prog, fusion and more substantial genres with longer lifetimes and greater influence. Bill Bruford will always be considered a prog drummer due to his association with Yes and various solo ventures. Over 50 years after first hearing Roundabout on my way to sophomore year of college, that's much too small a box (i.e. prog is the box) to contain the expanse of his style and talent.

The GOAT lineup of Yes included Bill Bruford. Alan White was a good drummer, but BB’ jazz infused playing into prog rock elevated YES to its highest level! Thank you Bill Bruford!

I always felt Alan was chosen for his availability rather than his ability.
Yes' personnel changes up until this point resulted in a better musician and better music. But not in this case.
I wonder what Yes would have been like if Bill hadn't left? Its all for the best though, because if working on Close to the Edge was arduous enough, recording Tales might have killed Bill.
I really wish Bill had one more tour with Yes. There are precious few live recordings with him, but nearly an entire tour with a very green Alan White was released.

Being a drummer, almost all drum solos I get to hear sound to me like practicing in front of an audience. I hardly hear any music in them. Now, when I first heard this solo here, in the late seventies, it instantly reminded me of someone throwing a drum kit (and the drummer too, perhaps ?) down a staircase which I found daring at least, considering the adequately elegant exit with only minor bruises. That being said, Bill is my hero since Roundabout, so there you have it.

I remember hearing this for the first time as a young teenage drummer and thinking: “What the hell is going on here?!?! This makes NO sense.” Of course, being young and stupid, I had bought into the Palmer/Bonham/Paice/et al. school of drum soloing, i.e., Faster/Louder/Longer = Better. Thankfully, we all grow up. This solo is a milestone in progressive music, a real gem (despite Dr. Bill’s lovable self-deprecation). Make no mistake, there is genius bubbling up from this 22-yr-old, and I doubt it was merely the coffee and adrenaline. Bravo.

Just recieved the Bill Bruford box "Make a song and dance", realize I´ve become a 60 year drummer and by that have had enough time to develop my own musical language. But still I realize that Bill Bruford's extraordinary creative ability is present in much of what I do (and what I try to achieve, both as a drummer, bass & guitarplayer, singer and songwriter), despite all the years of playing and all the influences that fill all kinds of music media today. Bill Bruford really is one of a kind! (Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to se Bill live, it would be a dream to get the opportunity to meet/see one of my biggest musical influenses in this lifetime)! Anyway, thank you Bill Bruford for all the music, innovation, ideas, things to work on and musical integrity! Greetings from Roger here from the Swedish West Coast! @BillBruford

The Mighty Mr. William Bruford. I heard a cover band do "All Good People" at a High School Dance when I was 13 years old in in 1973, ran out the next day, bought the Yes albums and became a Bruford Fan for Life. He is a true innovator. Listen to this solo integrating the Theme amidst Bill's percussive abandon. I love this solo. Bill was always thinking musically and that makes him far more than a drummer. The best thing I can say about Bill Bruford is I put him in the same class as Max Roach. And for those of you who don't know Max, go explore and find out what he innovated on the drums. Bill is right there with him for me!

I feel much the same. Like many drum solos, the drummer's concerns seem to lean less towards making an interesting musical statement than towards showing off how much noise he can make all by himself. Though to the young Bruford's credit, there is perceptible leaning towards the former concern as well. And to the older Bruford's credit, he greatly improved on the solos over time.

Your evaluation is, as usual, accurate, self-deprecating, and reflective. This is in keeping with the established English tradition of not patting oneself on one's back. What you missed, however, was that this solo was amazingly precocious for a 22 year-old. When I first heard it, I was a 15-year old drummer, and it sailed right over my head. "What the hell is he trying to do here?" I asked. "Where are the bombastics? The double bass patterns? The amazingly fast singles?" Little did I know that this solo was an inventive piece of rebellion in a world of musical overkill. It was a flash of brilliance wrapped in brevity. There are elements here of the solo you were doing in 1971; you imported the best bits, trimmed the fat, and went many places in a little over 2 minutes. You showed us glimpses of jazz and rock phrasing, and then took us out at the end like a cannon. Well-done.

As the person who knows more about Bill Bruford than anyone else in this room, I have to say.. I loved reading your comments. You understand exactly where you are at this point in life, you don't shy away from posting this solo (which is not great) and you hadn't had the tongue lashing from Jamie Muir yet about you existing for music and not vice-versa. You were young and trying to prove yourself. I never reached (or came anywhere close) to your level, but I do remember being behind the set, being the only one playing and thinking in my head, "My God! I have no ideas on where to go with this!" One of my other favorite drummers (who has been off radar for too many years) is Michael Suchorsky. I was chatting with him after one of many Everyman Band (Suchorsky, Fogel, Yaw, and David Torn) gigs circa 1980. I commented on there not being a single drum solo throughout the night. "The whole set was my solo", was his reply. I never listened to drums the same way after that. And your own work took on an entirely different dimension to me as I paid more attention to how you integrated with the music as a whole.

Bill comments in "Bruford and The Beat" that the way he hits the snare with his left hand was the result of holding his stick too far back, and thus having a slightly weak striking force, compensated by hitting on the rim to cut through the stage amplification at the time. The way he hit the snare back then was really unique, to my ear. Most drummers hit the rim too hard when they try to do it. Bill hit it lightly, and his stick hit the same place on the head consistently.
