I'm with this grandmother. This has happened to me and my wife. Shes right! they do need to lock up the gift cards. There also needs to be a more secure way of redeeming them.
Locking it up does zero good. They arnt active until you buy them. What she isnt telling anyone is she probably waited weeks after it was active to use the activated card. Ultimately it isnt the sellers responsibility to prevent scams. Thats reality. And calling this a scam is a misnomer anyway. It wasnt a scam. Some person probably has a pc setup that just runs a program to cold call try random codes at all hours of every day. Been going on for decades. There is no solution because the culprits has likley never even been in thr stoe that sold it. Again cold entry.

Plus the gift cards have to be activated and the scammer would need to have the gift card activated before you in order to use it before you since you can’t use the gift card unless you get it activated first beforehand. @@Megz1794 criminals steal the cards from the store display. They somehow carefully get inside the package and steal the numbers then replace the package with glue and they hang it back on the rack for unsuspecting victims.
They can't avoid this scam because the thieves just record the codes, then watch the balance on the code wherever you look up gift card balances, so they know when some buys the card with that code and has put money on it, then use it before the gift person can. There's no way to stop that except for locking the cards behind registers so only the purchaser ever sees it. It's insane that stores still haven't bothered to do this after years of gift card scams.

Id say to stop buying gift cards until the stores start locking them up but then the other problem is that you get an employee that will do this so there’s no winning with the gift cards so I guess stop buying them altogether. That happened to me once. I purchased a gift card for my daughter Bornday. I put $250 on the card about a month before her birthday. I took her to Wally World to redeem it. I get to the register and it had less then $50 dollars on it. I’m asking the cashier and Manager what happened to her money. My daughter was there buying her gift. And I couldn’t get a straight answer. I told them I had just registered it the day before and now it’s gone. After that I swore I would never purchase another gift card and I have not since. I rather stick to what I know, cash on hand or put inside the cards. This is funny because yesterday we was talking about this situation lol
They probably have no idea either tbh. In retail, you’re usually taught basics and then you’re out on the floor just figuring it out. It’s not like corporate cares all that much about what their minimum wage employees know as long as they make their money. They have cashiers that barely know what they’re doing training other cashiers.
Had this happen to us , but it was only a 25 dollar gift card from target!! It had been spent in november and by the time we went to use it in late december there was nothing on it! We told the person that gave it to us about it and the store but never got anything back!! Be very careful when buying gift cards people!!!
If consumers don’t know enough to check the back of the card, maybe train the cashier to do so, it only takes a glance. I’ve had many cashiers check my eggs to make sure none are broken. Have the self checkouts not allow those purchases like they do with alcohol. That way, the employee can check when purchased. Just a thought.
I feel bad for all these people sharing their similar experiences. My mom was close to buying several visa gift cards but we didn't buy them because of the fee. It'd be horrible to find out that they didn't work. I can't believe we can't just buy gift cards anymore 😩
IMO - it's my understanding this is happening in retail stores all over the country. Companies should honor these cards and make it right. One consumer said a specific large, well known business did not want to rectify the matter immediately, so the person contacted the police.

Why would you buy a card with the code exposed on the back? That's like buying a window with a crack already going across it. Is it not obvious that the card has been tampered with if the code on the back is literally scratched visibly or is there some other way they can see the code?

No it's not the employees it's crime groups that grab a bunch of gift cards, steal the codes, reseal the gift card packaging and place randomly on store gift card displays. They look very real after they've been resealed.

Usually my strategy is to pick the middle batch of the bunch so that it wouldn’t be tampered with or companies making sealed ones where you know if one is tampered with.

I bought a steam card, and before even leaving the store, tried to redeem it...but the person who was messing with the cards damaged the area where the code was so I could not read it and thankfully I could exchange it for a different card. They told me normally they do not do this and I had them remove the cover over the code to make sure it didn't damage the code and redeemed it right there in front of the cashier. Now i don't bother. Cards do need to be locked up.
Sometimes but not always. We had a problem at our Target with a gift card crime ring. They would grab a bunch of cards, take them out of the store, do their thing, then bring them back to hang on the peg again.
This is why our family does not buy VISA gift cards. Our child’s card was hacked & VISA told me to treat it like cash. The card is in my hand like cash they hacked it online. VISA did not fix their error so we no longer buy them.
The store are displaying the item in their store. Don't tell someone it happens and not take sctions to: move closer to put display near cashier register within sight of cashier and employee, if too lazy to keep an eye on display then take all giftcards out of store and don't sell it anymore. Stores that sell giftcard needs to lock it up behind a display case and only employee is allow to take it out for purchase when customer request for the card. Have them pay for it at customer service desk, no self-checkout. Stores should make an effort to report incidents and any complaints by customers to police for investigation.
Here in Canada we had a lot of these. I told about 20 stores about their fraud cards and not one store did anything until I raised concerns with their head offices who then changed all the cards i came across as fake.
When people stop buying gift cards then perhaps these businesses will care and figure out a better way to prevent theft. As it stands now the stores get your money so they don’t care but what they will care about is a loss in sales.

If you run into any issues with a gift card after you buy it from any grocery stores, they will not refund your money because the store has nothing to do with the issue, and will tell you to contact the company that's responsible for making those gift cards. I had a bad experience with an Apple gift card I purchased for $100 and had to contact Apple gift card about the issue.

Here's another scam on the credit card gift card. If you feel the sticker on the card number on the back of the card and the numbers don't match on the paper part of the package it's a bad card and notify the store immediately so they can pull it off the shelf. I've caught a couple of batches when I worked at a major supermarket. If you see someone writing down info from a gift card please report it to the store customer service desk immediately so they can pull those cards and call police to try to arrest them while they are in the store. And the evidence will be the info on the paper or phone. Thanks let's try to get these people.
I agree they should definitely be locked up, this way if it happens it is an inside job. I wanted to be a $6 pair of tweezers and sales person had to unlock the case and then hand it to the cashier for me, this was at Walmart. So I left and bought one at Walgreens.
My brother’s girlfriend bought me a visa gift card last Christmas and when i went to use it someone already made a purchase with it from $50 at best buy when i called these gift cards need to have it where even if someone has the code it wont be valid until the stores who sell them activates the card code after purchase or make it more secure

At the store where I work we for a bit didn't sell any gift cards because people would ask for something that required the associate to move away from the register. Then they would scan out the card, void the transaction, and then use the card later to steal from the store given once you scan it activates the card.
As a consumer of goods from a spectrum of merchants, my time is valuable, and I can't afford the luxury of chasing would be thieves to recoup my gift card losses... But to those of you who can reach out to stores and businesses of the like, much success to you in your efforts...
Amazon helped me when money was stolen from it..sad to hear they didnt help this lady. Unfortunately amazon card is the only one ive had problems with.

Out of all the gift cards I purchased, the codes are behind a layer you need to scratch off to reveal them, so I find this story a bit dubious.

Here in California just earlier this week a man got caught with $5,500 target gift cards 😮He was doing this exact same thing ..We have to do better!

This is why my store always prints the code on the receipt, because that way there’s no way to see the codes.

Cyber security is getting much worse all of a sudden. My wife just got scammed on her debit card.
I also got scammed on my bank card on October 24th and November 11th. It's getting ridiculous!

They should report it to the stores that sell them. Stores should not sell gift cards if they cannot secure them.

The store are displaying the item in their store.
Don't tell someone it happens and not take sctions to:
move closer to put display near cashier register within sight of cashier and employee, if too lazy to keep an eye on display then take all giftcards out of store and don't sell it anymore.
Stores that sell giftcard needs to lock it up behind a display case and only employee is allow to take it out for purchase when customer request for the card.
Have them pay for it at customer service desk, no self-checkout.
Stores should make an effort to report incidents and any complaints by customers to police for investigation.
They only gave her her money back because she went to the news.

Store employees steal the money. It has happened to me! Just give the gifts as cash.
Here in Canada we had a lot of these. I told about 20 stores about their fraud cards and not one store did anything until I raised concerns with their head offices who then changed all the cards i came across as fake.
When people stop buying gift cards then perhaps these businesses will care and figure out a better way to prevent theft. As it stands now the stores get your money so they don’t care but what they will care about is a loss in sales.
1) I also got some advice: if the numbers arent the same as the one on the package, don't buy it!
2) of theres any signs of tempering or tears, dont buy it!

If you run into any issues with a gift card after you buy it from any grocery stores, they will not refund your money because the store has nothing to do with the issue, and will tell you to contact the company that's responsible for making those gift cards. I had a bad experience with an Apple gift card I purchased for $100 and had to contact Apple gift card about the issue.
The best course of action do not buy gift cards. If we all stop buying them these companies will have no choice but to make them secure.

But you also have to think, some organizations and churches give gift cards to families in need. They can't handle cash money out for book keeping reasons.

Here's another scam on the credit card gift card. If you feel the sticker on the card number on the back of the card and the numbers don't match on the paper part of the package it's a bad card and notify the store immediately so they can pull it off the shelf. I've caught a couple of batches when I worked at a major supermarket. If you see someone writing down info from a gift card please report it to the store customer service desk immediately so they can pull those cards and call police to try to arrest them while they are in the store. And the evidence will be the info on the paper or phone. Thanks let's try to get these people.

I bought digital visa cards sent by email and text this year. I’m not buying cards again until they are locked up
Never get gift card in stores except behind the counter, online and digital. For safety reasons if you want to buy them for whatever reasons it is.
The best fix to all of this is never buy a gift card just give the person cash
I agree they should definitely be locked up, this way if it happens it is an inside job. I wanted to be a $6 pair of tweezers and sales person had to unlock the case and then hand it to the cashier for me, this was at Walmart. So I left and bought one at Walgreens.
My brother’s girlfriend bought me a visa gift card last Christmas and when i went to use it someone already made a purchase with it from $50 at best buy when i called these gift cards need to have it where even if someone has the code it wont be valid until the stores who sell them activates the card code after purchase or make it more secure
i was waiting in line at WalMart to return some of my item, there was couple customers were complaining about gift card not being charged after purchase. Its crazy

Been there done that! Its scammers pretending to be stars. The cards even post warnings!
At the store where I work we for a bit didn't sell any gift cards because people would ask for something that required the associate to move away from the register. Then they would scan out the card, void the transaction, and then use the card later to steal from the store given once you scan it activates the card.
This happened to me on my birthday. My cousin bought me a card to use on my birthday and it was already scratched out too
As a consumer of goods from a spectrum of merchants, my time is valuable, and I can't afford the luxury of chasing would be thieves to recoup my gift card losses...

Amazon helped me when money was stolen from it..sad to hear they didnt help this lady. Unfortunately amazon card is the only one ive had problems with.
