I had no clue that u could pull the wick out alil further then trim it to have a clean wick...my father passed on his zippo before he passed and the wick was all frayed/spread out with no braiding left i was just about to send it back for matnance but that could take days if not weeks or at least look into getting a new wick...then I watched ur vid and now my pop's zippo looks and works like brand new thank you sir I was worried they were just going to scrap it and give me a new one seeing as it's just a basic chrome model because it would be cheaper for them...u not only taught me a few new tricks but now his lighter/memory can be passed on to my children...thank you sooooo much sir.....liked and subbed
Thanks a lot Dave! Zippo amateur here and non smoker (buddy gave them to all of us as groomsmen's gifts). Love to carry it out with me at night, but had no idea how to take care it. Thanks for the vid!
@BuyLighters not many shops like that left sadly :( i was hoping i could fix it myself but i might just have to send it to zippo for repairs, thank you for answering my post.
Don't smoke anymore, so haven't used mine in a while. Flint was stuck solid. Worked it loose with wd40 and a poker. New flint and a refill and it works great. There is something great about a Zippo.
@TanJianWei92 Yeah, definitely wouldn't recommend putting oil on the lighter - sounds like it got on the flint. I would replace the fint again and see if it fires up. Whilre your in there, you might as well replace the wick and batting since those may have oil on them as well. As for the wheel, I'd try to find some local shop that does repairs.
Thanks man! I was baffled as to why my wick was not coming through properly. How the Zippo came was that the wick was not "snake" in correctly. It was like pulling a tooth. Now? With your help, pulls out nice and smooth.
I have four zippos, one of it brand new. Irrespective of wheter i'm using I have to refill it almost every three day if i want it to work properly, otherwise it will run out of fuel in the middle of the day when i'm out of home and i have to buy a bic lighter. Is that a normal behaviour? You've said "you should refill it every few weeks" and no one of my zippos hold fluid more than 3/5 days. I use original zippo fluid, do you think i'm doing something wrong?
I'm not a zippo expert or anything but from my observations, the fluid evaporates quickly. this would explain why the inside of the cap starts on fire.
+Harrison Dakota that's pretty standard. If i want my zippo to work perfectly, i have to fuel every 2 or 3 days. After that it will only work indoors because most of the fuel will already be gone and it becomes pretty hard to light out in the middle of the street with wind blowing and stuff. I just ordered a butane insert for my zippo, now my refiling problems will go away hopefully.
Meister Baiter if your gonna do something as lame as putting a butane insert into a zippo, you might as well just use a bic, or one of the knock off look alike lighters, don't desacrate a lighter as amazing as a Zippo with that shit
Firstly, it does not last 3-4 weeks, not even 1-2 weeks after you’ve filled the Zippo. Constant lighting like a smoker does, it will last 4 days, but fill it anyway. Fire in the top. You’ve over filled it!! The extra fuel has turned to gas! When lighting your Zippo inside give it a slight wave to get rid of the gas (fumes from over filling)
@mastertracuer There isn't really a time frame involved here because people use thier Zippo with different frequency. Generally, you can just perform these maintenance steps as they are needed.
If you overfill your Zippo and it leaks out while in your front pocket, you can give yourself one heck of a inner thigh chemical burn that is not comfortable at all. A friend told me this. :>)
Hey, thanks for the vid. Ive been wondering why my lighter is a bit hard to light, and ive kept refilling the fluid again again, i thought it was the problem. It ain't. Thankies.
hi oh mighty Zippo man i have a bit of a problem, i bought a lady zippo a few years ago and i was using it to melt wax off something and some got on the wheel and now it wont light, ive tried melting off the wax but still nothing is there anyway i can replace the wheel or keep on trying to melt the wax off?
I have found that by filling the fluid in the hole, as long as the nozzle of the fluid can is in the hole if you accidentally over fill, by releasing the pressure on the fluid can it sucks out excess fluid.
I have a question , Back in few months ago , i just leave my zippo alone , and when i use it again , the wheel turn rusty . i tried to put some oil for rusty parts on the wheel . and now i can't even light up .. no sparks .. my flint is still new ..
@BuyLighters , Thanks for replies . I don't think i can travel that far to your country just for the wheel . lol .. I'll try change flint . maybe i'm out of flint . cause when i put out the spring part . even though there's a look alike flint on the spring , i guess it's not flint . sorry i hope you understand what i'm talking about . I'll get the new flint when my pay day comes . Thanks :)
Can you leave the old flint in there and just put a new one in there to put pressure on the old one? Also, can you use NAPHTHA for fluid? Thanks!!!
10 ปีที่แล้ว
I think you can do that with the flint, but it will add more stress with the springs. For the fluid, it is advisable to use zippo fluids. But I think you can use alternative lighter fluid, just make sure it is a lighter fluid. Cheers mate!
I know thi video is old but are you still active? Was going to ask; My zippo will not light. the wheel is sparking, the flint is good, and the wick is clean. Any ideas?
Send the whole lighter to Zippo in Bradford, PA. They will replace the insert and it will work like new -- basically because it will BE new. All it will cost is the shipping one way, they send it back on their dime. Check out Zippo repairs or Zippo Clinic, you can search those terms right here on YT.
@rares007 i do the same thing except im 16 i dont smoke at all but having a zippo lighter is pretty awesome apparently people dont understand why i have one!
Doge Style Easy. Go on eBay. They are super cheap there. I got som lighter fluid and I got some flints and a wick thrown in. Never get them from the shops here in the UK. U end up paying so much more than necessary.
I have not used my Zippo since '95 after quitting smoking; yet kept it as I always liked my brass Zippo. Keep it in a dry; safe place: tried to give the flint-wheel a turn but it is locked motionless. Does not turn, forward nor backwards. I took out the spring: no flint, but the flint-wheel appears to have something pressed up against it. Any suggestions? **the wheel is not corroded. The wick is in decent shape. I kept it clean and dry all these years, so not sure what is wrong.
I know this is old but I have a new lighter, new flint , new liquid, new wick, did everything exactly as described and my lighter still only light once every 10-20 flicks at best. Bought in a store so apparently can’t return to zippo itself
im not sure wats wrong with mine i only got it about 2 weeks ago since i got it the wheel has been stiff and now there no spark when i pull it down i got stuck too
very nice vid, but a tad bit shaky on your terminology. "clip" on needle nose pliars are wire cutters, "metal" inside wick is coppe, and "brass hole" is flint tube. Not hating on you, because it did inform people. You do know to remove those flints, during long term storage, right? They will deteriorate after a few years, becoming like cement, and may rupture the flint tube.
THAT IS TRUE, YOU MUST HAVE A FLINT SEND PERMIT AND MAIL YOUR LIGHTER BACK TO HOME BONE SECURITY, THEY WILL SEND IT ON TO ZIPPO IF YOUR RECORD IS CLEAN, ZIPPO WILL USE THE LASER CRAFT MOTIFF ZAPPER TO REMOVE THE OLD FLINT, THEN THEY WILL REPLACE IT. IT ONLY TAKES ABOUT SIX MONTHS TO GET YOUR LIGHTER BACK. YOU ARE AN INFORMED IDIOT - BRAVO!
If it's worn down to very small size it tries to turn in the tube and gets caught on the way. Just leave it there then. Sometimes it won't even go back up when attaching the spring, then you must poke it with a needle.
ヤンギレGaWd lol, you must be a fake ass " stoner" , cuz i don't even smoke anymore, haven't for 2 1/2 years now, and even i know you never use a zippo to smoke with, they are for cigs only lol
For some reason my Zippo runs out of fluid super quick, in just a few days... This is especially annoying since I'm not a smoker and use it only occasionally :/
+Sofair For this reason i used to store my Zippo in the freezer that slows down the evaporation 10 times. Now that i found a good cheap alternative fuel, i don't bother. Instead of pocket where it meets your body temperature of 36' C, rather carry it in a bag and upright so that fuel doesn't leak out.
It could be that you are not filling it much. You need to remember that the fuel will evaporate over time, so it may be worth buying an attachment that stops this occuring
for wick I use cheap pipe cleaner instead. it have metal core inside, so pushing thru is easy and it is dirt cheap. they are selling it in bunch. A bunch will last until your grandchildren.
oh and people if you want to melt wax off something or your just bored and are buggering around with wax don't get it near your zippo show it some respect, don't be stupid like me.
I brought my first zippo today, never will go back to Normal lighters these are the best x
Kirsty Sanderson are you still using zippos 4 years later?
Thanks a lot Dave! Zippo amateur here and non smoker (buddy gave them to all of us as groomsmen's gifts). Love to carry it out with me at night, but had no idea how to take care it. Thanks for the vid!
HA! We live in such a complicated world, yet, this is sooo simple to clean and fix! Thanks for posting!
I just found a zippo today at the gas station and this video showed me ebeeything i needed to know thank you ❤
Thank you. After watching this video I trimmed the wick and my lighter is restored!
THANK YOU MATE, you just saved my 'old' buddy Zippo... Back to live!
Greetings from Brazil ! :)
I pick up old bic lighters on the street and save the Flint's I have be been using Zippos for 20 yrs never needed to buy a Flint
I did that and it damaged my flint wheel. It made the flint wheel dull.
Wow you really helped me with the wick part it was very unclear on the zippo wick package. Thanks!
@BuyLighters not many shops like that left sadly :( i was hoping i could fix it myself but i might just have to send it to zippo for repairs, thank you for answering my post.
so professional...so easy .....
good luck with next videos !
Thumps UP !
That was very helpful, thank you mate. My zippo lighter was giving problem due to over carbon, now its working all new :-) thanks again.

@BrokenGoods I would probably try to find a local cigar shop or something that does lighter repairs. You'll probably need to replace the wheel.
Thanks for the clear, concise video. 👍🏼
Wow. Thanks for sharing. I'm assuming that you use your zippo frequently. Do you notice that the flint wears down after 21 days?
Great video thanks for helping me fix my pipe zippo.
This video helped me
The hole in the rayon block is for an extra flint.
Thanks man! I was baffled as to why my wick was not coming through properly. How the Zippo came was that the wick was not "snake" in correctly. It was like pulling a tooth. Now? With your help, pulls out nice and smooth.
Not sure what you are referring to. Can you give the the time stamp where you see the other hole?
I have four zippos, one of it brand new. I'm not a zippo expert or anything but from my observations, the fluid evaporates quickly. this would explain why the inside of the cap starts on fire.
Yeah it's broken but u can send it to zippo and they will replace it or fix it for free
+Harrison Dakota that's pretty standard. If i want my zippo to work perfectly, i have to fuel every 2 or 3 days. After that it will only work indoors because most of the fuel will already be gone and it becomes pretty hard to light out in the middle of the street with wind blowing and stuff.

if you are lucky, the naphtha will just evaporate quickly and no harm done
+Gabriel Cornea
Zippo fuel isn't made out of naptha. It's made out of petroleum distillates.
Just use old inner tube from a road bike
We are still active. Have you tried lighting the wick with another lighter to make sure the fluid is saturating it?
Hey, thanks for the vid. Ive been wondering why my lighter is a bit hard to light, and ive kept refilling the fluid again again, i thought it was the problem. It ain't. Thankies.
@iComment17 Hmm, I've heard from a few sources that a typical flint can go about 1500 lights or so. So, probably every couple of weeks or so.
@coolguy778778 I would suggest changing the wick and using a second lighter to melt the remaining wax off of the chimney.
@DropShot95
The other hole is for quick refilling with lighter fluid.
hi oh mighty Zippo man i have a bit of a problem, i bought a lady zippo a few years ago and i was using it to melt wax off something and some got on the wheel and now it wont light, ive tried melting off the wax but still nothing is there anyway i can replace the wheel or keep on trying to melt the wax off?

I heard using flints from BIC lights work as well. Is that true ?
Yeah, it works
ZIMBO THA WOLF u can buy China flints online to. Little less quality but u can buy so many that it still save u alot of money

I usually dont use zippos but iv'e started to recently and this was very helpful.
Nicely presented 👍🏼

@123monkeyo Yikes! So nothing dropped out when you took the screw out of the bottom?
Zippo-A reason to love America.
YOU ONLY HAVE ONE BRAIN CELL LEFT.
I know thi video is old but are you still active? Was going to ask; My zippo will not light. the wheel is sparking, the flint is good, and the wick is clean. Any ideas?
very prrecise, logical, well-done!

good to know i can clip the wick, didn't know that.
@BuyLighters okay thank you very much

Great video!! Thanks
Problem is, where do you buy the flint or wick if you are not stateside?
Doge Style Easy. Go on eBay. They are super cheap there. I got som lighter fluid and I got some flints and a wick thrown in. Never get them from the shops here in the UK. U end up paying so much more than necessary.
Fantastic, you made it all look so easy! Thank you for taking the time to post.
NvrGiveIn omg it is easy it's so easy like really easy like if it was any easier you could do it in a coma
Thanks this video helped me a lot
@BuyLighters
he means the hole on the downside of the zippo its self, next to the screw thing i think ;)
its for filling your zippo ;)
hey i got wax in the chimney of my zippo and it wont light cuz its on the wick how can i get it out? (i was melting a candle cuz i was bored)
Great video, thanks a bunch dude!
@aDAMPis1913 Is it leaking fuel?
After taking it apart Ive found I cant slide the lighter all the way back into the case and the lid isn't closing(??)
I have not used my Zippo since '95 after quitting smoking; yet kept it as I always liked my brass Zippo.
Keep it in a dry; safe place: tried to give the flint-wheel a turn but it is locked motionless. Does not turn, forward nor backwards.

Any suggestions?
**the wheel is not corroded. The wick is in decent shape. I kept it clean and dry all these years, so not sure what is wrong.
Try putting a new flint in you are probably hitting the spacer which is connected to the spring
I know this is old but I have a new lighter, new flint , new liquid, new wick, did everything exactly as described and my lighter still only light once every 10-20 flicks at best. Bought in a store so apparently can’t return to zippo itself

Sounds like your flint ran out. I shouldn't have if its only 2 weeks old, but thats what i would check first.
great video thanks
@aDAMPis1913 Not sure what exactly your asking here.
I'm lost. I got this brand new Zippo lighter. Wondering if anyone can help me with flame? How does it work? Where should I refill it?
Thank You
Awesome, thanks!
that's a nice watch
+Sammy C but its worn...;[

Use old bic flints and cut in half and put one in the cotton for a backup
The flint does not come out...
