- Spike Jones and His City Slickers were among the many performers showcased in "Soundies," short musical films designed to be played in special jukeboxes. In CLINK! CLINK! ANOTHER DRINK (1942), Del Porter leads the chorus and there's a featured vocal by Mel Blanc, the voice of many legendary cartoon characters (including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety and Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, and Barney Rubble).
Read all about Soundies in THE SOUNDIES BOOK: A REVISED AND EXPANDED GUIDE TO THE "MUSIC VIDEOS" OF THE 1940s (2007) available from iUniverse at www.iuniverse.com
Mel was a genious! The voice he used here was the voice of the drunk stork that would deliver babies in a couple of the WB cartoons.
He always cracked me up with that voice
Yes, Mel was a genius. He’s my voice acting idol amount of energy. He puts into this song it’s just unbelievable. We know that drunk voice was actually the first voice blanc did for Looney Tunes
NOBODY did drunk better than Mel Blanc!
Check out Foster Brooks on the DEan Martin roasts, he's fantastic portraying a drunk
@@larrydevore6657 -- He was, but this was 30 years earlier.
Mel, Blank did drunk is like no one did he was truly an one of a kind in fact that drunk voice he did This song was the voice he did for Looney Tunes it was for a drunken bull
@@Nick-ty9us...in "Picador Porky."
@@albertpeterson5585 I heard about that
Nothing like this these days! Spike was a one-off genius.
Mel and Spike working together is a match made in heaven. If only they had done more together.
Between the Warner Brothers cartoons and the Jack Benny program, Mel's plate was pretty fulll during the war years. He later had his own radio show, but it didn't do well.
spike was also an accomplished n.b.c. studio percussionist before he decided to go into his comedy career with his great band. r.i.p. spike, you were one of a kind.
I think one of the reasons Spike Jones is so timeless is because I read that when he hired people for his band they had to be funny, but more importantly they had to be excellent musicians. The talent will continue to keep the music alive for many more generations to come.
This lineup was before he hired George Rock (1944) and Freddie Morgan (1947), probably his two greatest musician/comics ever.
Healso inspired “Weird Al” Yankovic
@@Nick-ty9us That's one reason I started started listening to Spike Jones. I heard he was an influence on Weird Al. I had never heard of Spike before. Got a record of his from the library and I was hooked.
Mel is the singing drunk with the mustache(he's holding the beer stein). Mel also provided his own vocals.
He also provided his own mustache. If you look close, it peeps through the fake one that he wore for this soundie.
80 years later and still funny as hell 😂😂😂😂
This was a few years before Freddie Morgan, George Rock, Sir Frederick Gas, Peter James, Helen Grayco (his 2nd wife), Mousie Garner and Billy Barty joined the band. The war years were great for him, but he really hit his stride between 1945 and 1955. He was tops on early TV.
I absolutely love Mel Blanc! So hilarious!! CHEERS!
He was voice acting genius one of the original God of voices the man of a thousand voices
2:24 the special appearance of the adult voices from Peanuts.
Ha ha ha ha!! I was like... wait a minute... is that Mel Blanc?? Then I looked at the description, and was so happy that it was!
Great video and it's nice to see a young Mel Blanc as the vocalist.
Yes, that's Mel. He recorded the song with Spike and subsequently appeared in this Soundie as well.
If you think about it, the portion of Mel Blanc is basically the Drunk Stork from Looney Tunes. Hehe!
The drunk voice and hiccup have been used in countless cartoons. In the cartoon with the tiny elephant, he used the same drunk voice on a bar patron that's staggering home, sees the elephant, then tells it it's late, then comments how it used to always be pink.
He used that voice as early as 1937, when his performance as a "drunken bull" in Tex Avery's "Picador Porky" was the first one he did for the Schlesinger/Warner studio.
@@patrickrobinson4918 in fact that drunk he did it was the very first Looney Tunes voice he ever did
"Punch Trunk" (1953).
My high school percussion teacher used to make us play along with this tune's thyrthm as a morning warmup for class. What a legend he was,. in hind site
I'm not a musician, but my colleague who is points out how terrific these musicians were!
An old Spike Jones number that is wildly appropriate for the season.
That's how it actually concludes. This is one of the Soundies that was reissued to the home-movie market by Official Films, so what's missing is the original opening title and a "The End" title. Songwise, however, it's complete.
The TV-like device on which you see the "sing-along" lyrics in this is a Mills Panoram movie jukebox of the type on which these shorts were originally shown. Because they were meant to be projected from the rear, original Soundies prints are reversed left-to-right when viewed on a conventional 16mm projector.
long reply here 6 years later, but a newer video of this actual clip playing on a actual Mills Panoram can be seen by searching on YT "Mills Panoram Movie Jukebox plays Clink! Clink! Another Drink" I can't post direct link as YT blocks it as spam? it's really cool to watch, Cheers!!!
Greatest comedy song ever.
The expression "pink elephants," used in reference to being intoxicated, had been around for years, and the "Pink Elephants on Parade" number from DUMBO (1941) may be the best-known example.
This video is a hoot .Have listened several times just today !
I came from an Exodia vid, but I love this hot damm song
Mel originally delivered his "inebriated" vocal in Spike's original January 1942 Victor recording of "Clink, Clink, Clink", and was also featured in this "Soundie"- one of his first "live" appearances on film...
Fabulous fun! My hubby is learning this tune to play on a ukulele as I type this. Cool!
Mel blanks, very first Looney Tunes voice was actually a voice of a drunken guy in a costume
This video always puts a smile on my face. Mel is a natural in this video. Spike Jones inspired me to make and play the washboard. 🍺🍺
These videos are such treasures - so good they aren't lost in the archives of history.
Dang I didn't know music videos were this old
Mel fucking Blanc................the BEST
The original god of voices
Oh brother pink elephants are chasing me my favorite part
Willoughby.... next stop Willoughby...
Great to see some Spike Jones that I didn't know and great to see Mel in there as well. Thanks!
Clink, clink, another drink
Plenty in the cellar when it's gone
Drink, drink, the glasses clink
Making tinkly music till the dawn is breaking
Clang, clang, who cares a dang?
What's the difference when you're on a spree?
Over the teeth, behind the gums
Look out stomach here she comes
Hi, have another drink on me
Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle, gurgle
Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle, gurgle
Trinkle, trinkle, trinkle, trinkle
Slice of cheese and bite of pickle
Doesn't even cost a nickel
Now to wash it down
Clink, clink, no more to drink
I had a cellar full but now its gone
Drink, drink, the glasses clink
Like the anvil chorus and my head is splitting
Uh, brinking, uh, busting, oh brother
Oh, ow, what'll I do now
Pink elephants are running after me
Oh, that stuff is smooth as silk
From now on I'll stick to milk
Nothing else to drink for me
Foster Brooks
WORLD'S BEST DRUNK.
Mel Blanc and Spike Jones were awesome! Great video; thanks for posting horrormovieshows ! :-)
The banjo player in the picture in Red Rountree (later to perform with the Banjo Kings). But the soundtrack actually features guitarist Perry Botkin, Sr.
Every one of these things is so damned brilliant and a nonstop laugh riot. How did they keep up such a high level of performance?
Endless rehearsal
This is Superb!! Thank You!!
Just been playing the Original 78 of this Great Tune!!
I just acquired a whole box of new 78's and there a loads of Spike Jones in there :)
So nice to see this in real life...I thought it sounded like Mel singing on the record...Once again Many Thanks!!! :)
Glenn Johnson Pure genius! My late dad`s favourite band.So great to see these soundies, many for the first time. Thanks for these uploads.
Worth every drop!
Spike Jones is a Genius!
I think that is Mel Blanc (Voice of Bugs Bunny) singing the Lead Part.
+Patrick D YES!
He delivered the same vocal on their original 1942 Bluebird recording.
Indeed it is Doc!
it is him, the only guy that can do such Hilarious Voices
Spike & Mel. SCORE!!
I STAN THIS BOP, CLASSIC ALEX HIRSCH GOT ME INTO NEW FIRE
Music videos were just as surreal then as they are now, apparently.
I wonder how "Drink, Drink, Drink" and "Gaudeamus Igitur" from "The Student Prince" would become if played by Mr. Jones and his Slickers.
Mel recreated his "inebriated" vocal from Spike's original January 1942 recording of the song, and did it again on a March 1943 AFRS "COMMAND PERFORMANCE" radio appearance by Spike and his City Slickers.
Mel's "drunk voice" was what got him hired at Warner Brothers in 1937. His first cartoon was a Porky Pig short where he played a drunk bull. But not Porky. Joe Daugherty was still the voice of Porky at the time. It didn't last long before Mel took over.
"Picador Porky".
Actually, Mel Blanc's real voice was Sylvester without the lisp.
Yes, Sylvester’s voice was the closest to Mel Blanc regular speaking voice without the list that he did that voice on the Judy Canova radio show which that characters name was Sylvester. He also did a another character Pedro. Who talked like speedy Gonzalez like his speech patterns
good thing i saw this, this is really funny. i wish this humor would still be in american shows now a days.
Stumping mix !
Loved it, thanks for sharing.
A toast to Carrie Nation!
I'll have another one!
Mel Blank was awesome!

I really want some of them anti-gravity shoes.
Yes, Spike is the "bartender" here.
Actress Sigourney Weaver's uncle played with Spike Jones; "Doodles Weaver"
am i seeing things too, because did he really have all that cheese, pickle and cellarful to drink off-screen that quickly?
thanks,he's hilarious,this vid looks like a cartoon,only that....without the drawings hahaha,spike was a master
heureux de retrouver cela
I have got the original version of Riders in the sky on an old 78 record, if interested, let me know
Fun fact, through the whole song they don't take a single drink.
Considering that alcohol tastes terrible why would they .Had they used root beer or coke maybe they would have taken some sips. This song is hilarious .wish I could perform in a video like this .i know a couple of people who like wine but had a little too much and didn;t feel good after.
that made them drink it way less often.
Now we know what Sylvester sounds like after he's drunk at 1:19.
And or daffy sounded after he got drunk also, grandpa Lou from Rugrats sounds like that
Looks like him!
@Patrick D, Yep, that's Mel Blanc.
I wish I could do that with my tie.
MEL!!!!
Taken from The Virgeta Smurf Show segment, Helium Blower
...here's that drunken bull again.
OMG Just when you think they must have run out of routines along comes another one!!!!!ROFLOL !!!!!!! Hahahahaha!!!!!! TenStarsplus !!!!!!!!

So this is what bartenders do.... LOL
Aloha from Hawaii,
Thomas
Can anyone tell what meter this performed in ?
kiaweking : Meter sounds like standard "CUT TIME" (2/2time)!
is that mel blanc in this video using the voice made famous as sylvester the cat in the warner brothers cartoon classics?
YES! 😃
Wait a sec..."Doodles is her Uncle?" Oh, right on!!
I didnt see anyone but one person drink. The others must be high on something else
I have 4 disks of him
Loyal: Well I can't tell 'cause the only pictures I've seen of him are when he would've been much older. 'Ehhh . . . could be!'
sting: Thanks for the confirmation! Would ya happen to know whether he dubbed himself or that they recorded him while they were shooting. That's what threw me off, it sounds almost like dubbing.
They recorded the soundtrack first, then "lip-synched" it for the film.
@leicafool Yes, that's Mel.
ch-yeah
An example for a german drinking song from that time, I think it is interesting to compare these two songs:
/watch?v=Iq0bOvfHGfA
Was that actually Mel Blanc or just his voice?
It was Mel AND his voice. 😀
Is this what happens if bob clampett did a music video? =P

Greetings! I've got the 78rpm version.

Haha. I'm too young for this shit.
