이 곡은 조용하면서 웅장한 ‘제주도의 탄생’, 긴박하고 리듬감 있는 ‘자연과 인간의 탄생’, 아름답고 평온한 ‘제주민요의 탄생’ 세 부분으로 나눠진다. 먼저 제주도의 탄생에서는 바다 한 가운데 화산이 폭발할 징조를 표현하고, 화산활동으로 만들어진 제주도의 모습을 표현하였다. 자연과 인간의 탄생에서는 제주민요 ‘계화타령’의 멜로디를 대선율로 활용하면서 제주도의 자연이 형성되고 인간이 탄생하는 과정을 표현하였다. 마지막 제주민요의 탄생에서는 제주민요 ‘이야홍 타령’의 멜로디를 주선율로 표현하였다.
