I think this show resonates so much with adults who watch it because we can relate with the themes. Our parents are noticeably aging, most of us have some regret or look back on the past fondly, the friends you grew up with have all moved away. Shit hits hard. "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them."
I've always felt that meeting Old Man Voll is the reason why Himmel never confessed his feelings to Frieren. He saw the consequences even reciprocal love could have for someone with a greater than human lifespan.
@@tb4076This segment also ties into the foundation of narrative with Frieren carrying Himmel's memory while contrasting her to someone who lives a long time and forgot his wife, so not random at all narratively speaking.
You guys are forgetting that Himmel is also kind of selfish, Himmel always shows love to Frieren, otherwise the ring scene wouldn't happen, He basically confessed his feelings already, just not in words.
@@ninjetz3707 But he only did that because he knew she wouldn't understand what it meant anyway. Otherwise he would have verbalized his proposal when it was clear the implications were lost on her.
This is the episode that totally broke me. My late uncle had a dementia and every other day his wife had to remind him that he is married to her. Now that I'm married, this is one of my biggest fear: losing the memories of my loved ones. I hope I'll remember my loved ones until my last breath. I don't want to forget :(
last night I dreamed about my Mom and Dad, he's been gone for 42 years and she's been gone for 25, so I can feel for Voll, reminiscing can bring back loved ones in your dreams. It just felt so natural for them to be there.
Frieren not wanting to tell Old Man Voll the truth about the Demon King is especially sad yet heartwarming because if she did he would lose his final purpose in life. And with it he'd likely lose all the memories of his wife, slowly wither and pass away. After all, he's only still here to fulfill the promise to his wife: to protect the village from the Demon King and finally achieve the peace she wanted everyone to experience. With Voll slowly losing more and more of his thoughts Frieren didn't want take anything more away from her dear friend...
Many people miss this because the episodes are so far apart. But Kraft had never heard of Frieren and was unimpressed that she was part of the Hero party. Kraft also asked Frieren if she had ever heard of him and she said no. Their lives as elves are so unfathomably long that each other's accomplishments were but a blip in time barely noticeable, making them almost pointless in the grand scheme of time. That's why Kraft is a devout monk that praises the Goddess. He wants to believe that life has a purpose and meaning. That it is not just long eternity of nothing for him.
That said, Kraft was exaggerating a bit to claim the world doesn't remember his accomplishments at all. There are statues of him that haven't worn down to the point of being unrecognizable (so it can't have been "that" long ago), and it is still known the statues depict heroes who saved the world. It's their names and what they saved the world from that are not remembered.
@@KeijiMaeda86 yes, but I assumed you were speaking of Kraft's adventure as being further back than recorded history, like ten thousand years ago or something like that to qualify for the "unfathomably long" part. That his statue is still in decent condition indicates it didn't happen "that" long ago. He's still most certainly several times older than Frieren. Spoiler: Local environment, what the statue is made of, etc. may be a factor too. Later in the manga I hear a statue of Flamme is seen, but despite it being only a thousand years old it's eroded to the point that her face is unclear.
@@Ryodraco kraft's statue's outfit is similar to that of time of flamme which is based off of ancient rome. So we can assume it's more than 1000 years old. The old lady said that the towns people has been taking care of the statues so maybe thier ancestors have been taking care of it too.
Not many people catch onto how much that conversation with Old Man Voll influenced Himmel, I think he it probably changed his perspective on his love for Frieren, if he was thinking of saying something to her at some point or another, his mind may have changed listening to Old Man Voll. Knowing how he was, he most likely didn't want to his love to cause any hurt to Frieren, before they reach Ende I bet she realises how Himmel felt and maybe reassesses her own feelings. We know that elves don't get emotionally attached so easily, but I think Frieren might be different, we've already seen how emotional she has felt towards her friends.
The Elves do get emotionally attached and that is something we will see later on even more. They have all the same emotions and emotional range that humans have, and sometimes their emotions might be even stronger than humans. The only difference is their perception of time that leads them to not get attached as quickly as humans do, something that lead to them seem aloof to humans. Frieren herself is not a reliable narrator for us to understand what a normal elf is like because she is not a normal elf as she isolated herself for more than 1000 years and has no real concept of social norms and customs or even any real experience of things like friendship and love. Himmel, Heiter and Eisen were the first real friends she had since her apprenticeship with Flamme.
@@kpetalis indeed, my impression is they do fall in love, experience romance, etc. but it takes a long time to get to that point compared to a human. Frieren probably lost most of her people before she could learn/experience that. For her, realizing Himmel's feelings and her own over the span of 80+ years might well be the elf equivalent of "love at first sight."
Because of what happened with Old Man Voll, this episode is simultaneously one of the most beautiful, and one of the most painful, of all the episodes I've seen of the show. Then again, I lost my aunt to Alzheimers, so I'm focred to admit I may be biased. On the plus side, I liked how the warrior in the statue they cleaned, was Kraft. There was some foreshadowing of it too, as Kraft made an oblique reference to his own great exploits but never clarified them. It's like an indicator to Frieren that even statues get forgotten with enough time.

First of all, I don't understand English, so I'm sorry if my English is a little weird. I love Ms.Alana Misako's reaction. Old Man Voll's story is sad. I think old Voll was on the verge of Alzheimer's disease. Sein's story was a funny story mixed with gags.
Frieren saying that Himmel is the reason she wants to know the people better, just as Voll protects the village because of his wife, showing how unconsciously she places Himmel on the same level as Voll places his wife. It's subtle, but for me, it's a proof that Frieren has feeling for Himmel, she just don't know them well since elves have no love and reproductive instincs like she said. Also, I know that your are ahead on the show, so I'm hyped for the "komi-san" moment in the next episode ^^.

And after this - personally speaking - the show kind of nosedives. Something that could have been done in, at most, three or four episodes is dragged out for half the season. It's such a shame.
