Nice twist ending; after all the endings with expected endings this really caught me off guard. Shame they'll probably never be back in a story; it'd be cool to see how they handle a threat to humanity (other than their own kind). I'm almost envious of the kids who read these back in the day (heck, even now if they got a copy, I bet) and that lived in towns with actual gargoyles on buildings. Bet it changed there whole view of the place.
