Everytime I watch Sybil scenes I realise that even on their best days the rest of the family can't compare to Sybil on her worst. One of the kindest characters to ever appear on television! ❤️
Spoilt sweet... Meanwhile Mary is spoilt rotten
I do wonder if seeing Mary and Edith always being at each other’s throats as children and teens impacted the kind of person Sybil became.
She was an Angel. Branson and Sybil were a dream couple.
@viviennepastor3188 not at the beginning.
@@saberthecoolest : I think the writer's had this in mind. The harsh authoritarian older sister, the jealous one in the middle, and the idealist as the youngest.
"She wants to keep it private not secret, there's a difference."
"Amen."
Wish more people understood that.
Mark Zuckerburg has left the chat.
I love the spine that Anna has, especially how and why she pairs it with respectful and adult communication so well...
Right..especially when she tells O'Brien to zip up her lips! and mind her own business! Lol
“I’ll never forget her, her kindness changed my life.”
The three-way hug between Tom, Gwen, and Lady Sybil at the end is one of the sweetest moments on television. It’s so heartwarming to see Gwen achieve her goal.
I love when Sybil says, "your dream is my dream now". She probably really means that. Before the war, Sybil could probably never imagine having a career of her own or a chance to to really direct her own future. Of course the war changed all that and she was able to become a nurse. But at the time, I think she was living vicariously through Gwen a little bit.
I venture to say that ANY war has changed the position of women due to the shortage of men on the home front. This forced women to take over the job responsibilities formerly attributed to the male species. With that women also finally received the recognition (IN PARTS ONLY) they were due. However, the pay is still vastly less these days for men doing the same job as women. Though the discrepancy has - over time - lessened. But it was a start.
It's a beautiful story line when you follow the individual characters through it with them!
And this is why Sybil is the best of the sisters. Truly using her position and power for others. Making Gwen’s dream her own so it can come true. The epitome of a noble woman and lady.
Respect for the actress's decision to leave the show. But TBH the character Sybil was gone just too soon. Her character was so strong that even after her death, she continued to influence and guide the family. She was sorely missed by fans.
I agree! Sybil and Matthew's characters should have been replaced with other actors! The scene where her mother's reaction to her baking a cake was proof of Sybil's strength. Matthew believing Mary was capable of running DT was also proof of the strength and depth of both characters. Well, it's spilled milk now.
That's why we got Rose.
I do remember her father asking the question.. "What are we going to do with Rose?" ....Lol...
Seems like she was the Princess Diana of the family.
“There are many young girls who would be glad of a position of this house.”
“And when I hand in my notice, I shall be happy to think one of them will be taking my place.”
What a comeback. Bravo, Gwen!
This is such a good response to some people’s attitude of “You should be grateful to be working here” 🙄 😒
You can be grateful AND at the same time try to find a job you’re better suited to.
@@DoriZuza agreed, there's nothing wrong with service, nor paving roads, nor working at a shop, if it's what you are wanting to do, you should be allowed to have the chance, if you've worked for it, it's so hard to wrap a 21st century mindset around a 19th century mindset, which in a lot of ways, this still was
Just lovely all around. Nice to see Sybil giving Gwen the support she needs to elevate herself. And the standing post so Robert couldn't go into the library was quite funny.
That’s what was the problem at the time. It was viewed as “elevation”. While working in house service or being a secretary, all is service in the wide variety of this notion.
Gwen simply wanted a different path. She didn’t see herself as “elevating” over her friends and colleagues. And some (not going to point fingers here - but that character seemed to have been getting it wrong most of her time at Downton) took it as Gwen saw herself better than the others. Mean woman.
@@milanamughal Odious woman, you mean.
@@milanamughal l never liked her from the get-go.
Sybil knew the names of all the servants, unlike Mary & Edith. The tone of voice she took with Lily was so kind & gentle. Such a precious character gone way too soon....
My heart warms up every time Sybil appears 😭😭😭
I’m too chicken s- to watch Sybil’s death episode I liked her that much
"Odious woman!" 😂😂😂😂
I love how even though no one upstairs even knows about Gwen and Sybil for years they still become good friends and Sybil helps Gwen all she can. She completely changes Gwen’s life behind the scenes and years later when Gwen comes back the family finally see what Sybil had done. They finally see how truly good and helpful Sybil always was
Mary and Edith knew that about Sybil. They just never truly acknowledged it out loud until they were forced to. And Sybil with Gwen kept that job hunt episode a big secret because there was concern that Gwen getting the job would be sabotaged somehow (if not by the narrow minded discriminatory attitude of everyone upstairs AND downstairs (just think the envy of some of them)).
@@junewilson1629 Change from the established order is almost always threatening.
Of all the characters, Lady Sybil was my favorite and will always remain as such. A more caring and loving individual could never be found at Downton or in real life as well.
She was like Diana..
Sybil was a Vision..... such a beautiful Lady inside and out
The fact she knows servants by name is so sweet
This is an ideal - how women should help raise each other up, and to be inspired by one another.
I love that little group hug at the end.😊
Here's where Mrs Hughs tells Tom "be careful, lad, or you'll end up without a job and with a broken heart". ❤
She was right, but not in the way she thought.
Sybil, Matthew, Isobel, Anna, Cora and William were the most unproblematic, beautiful and kindest characters.
Isobel kinda was🤔😂
I think what made them so unproblematic was, they weren't jealous, envious, discriminatory or narrow minded by any means. Cora had too much American in her where the British were always known to be rather snobbish. But they were open to change and did not feel threatened by change or challenge. Just remember Cora's attitude when the oven downstairs failed and her mother opted to improvise the picnic mode instead of that official dinner at the long table. She was rather open to it. Where everyone else was looking to have a certified heart attack.
I agree! I would put Ms. Hughes and Alfred on that list.
The funniest person award goes to Ms. Patmore (her wit, sharp comebacks, etc.)
This is Anna erasure.
Sybil throughout this whole sequence reminded me of a Disney Princess especially at 4:25
11:34 i love the triple hug 🥺💕
Me too.
I wished Downton Abbey episodes never ended 😊 I enjoyed them throughout. Whenever they are repeated I am so delighted. Thanks for sharing this and many others 💞
I love the tenacious spirit of Sybil and the courage of Gwen.
One of my fave lady Sybil storylines. 😊
Rose Leslie (Gwen) was ironically probably the most blue booded member of the cast. Her father is Simon Arbuthnot-Leslie the chieftain of the Aberdeenshire branch of Clan Leslie. Her mother is a great granddaughter of the 15th Lord Lovat
I love how encouraging and hopeful Sybil is with Gwen. Even when Gwen wants to give up or feels it’s useless to try Sybil continues to encourage and support her
Sybil and Gwen were just like Anna and Mary
I wish Sybil and Gwen characters would be stay longer on Downton Abbey series 😢, it must be fun to watch their charecters development.
@@Cik_Siput.Luar_Biasa Yeah 😞
And yet the omnipresent Mrs. Hughes has to go and ruin it for everyone.
Ms. Hughes is such a sweetheart! She didn'r ruin anything whatsoever@@robboyte1101
@@robboyte1101 It was nasty O'Brien who told Mrs. Hughes and Carson about the typewriter. O'Brien was so mean-spirited.
“2:48 Are you hiring and sacking now Miss O’Brien” 😭
I love that last scene, because you can see that despite their difference in rank, they are friends that support eachother.
Sybil, my very favorite character on the show. I missed her tremendously. Almost stopped watching. This was such a great storyline! Nice to see Thomas being happy for her too!
Sybil .. no one hits a bulls eye in the first arrow
Ygritte ... You know nothing Jon Snow
Gwen was a top tier character, glad to see the callback to her in the later season.
I still tear up when Gwen gets the job.
SYBLE is an angel
'Gwen' was great in the TV version of 'The Time Traveller's Wife'. Fantastic, charming and postitive story arc. Sybil and Anna are lovely too
I love all seasons of Downton abby and both movies of downton abby
Abbey
"Get back, please."
Jesus, Mr. Carson. It's a typewriter, not a grenade.
To Carson anything that wasn't from the Victorian era WAS a grenade 😂🤣.
You saw how he reacted to the telephone and electricity
Sybil had a heart of gold l hated to see her character end she was the epitome of grace loving warm hearted and eloquently beautiful human being l was sad to see the show ended hoping for something similar to come on unc North Carolina l was a avid fan of EastEnders but that went off the air as well.♥️
I always wondered about Gwen. So happy for her 🥹 i love Gwen!!! And I loved her friendship with Ana and Sybil!!
💖 love Sybil..
Rewatching some of these and you see how many servants they had
It was very nasty of the group to act like she had betrayed them by buying a typewriter. Not everyone wants to be a SLAVE working from dawn till dusk for his and her lordship
tbf at the time being in servitude was an amazing prospect, it's hard to think now, but they probably thought being in service was much more stable a job than anything else despite its flaws and drawbacks
@@KawaiiStars add to this the fact that the Crowleys were actually very "people" for the servants. So it was a big prospect and stable job. It was before the IWW the people were still very pro-monarchy and nobility. DA is basically a fairy tale about what the world was like back then especially for servants
It infuriated me, the way they talked to her. Way back when. Some of the characters really made me mad. The actors were so good at being bad!
@@olakeska7908 yeah the croweleys are really the best case scenario here, not everyone got the treatment and freedom the staff here had it's a very romantic view of the upper class since we follow them so they've to be somewhat likeable
most of these people still had an older mindset that working as a servant for nobility was the best job for a peasant, the idea that there could be even better jobs out there was still quite new (that's why they barely even knew how to use a typewriter)
"Get back please" ... Mr Carson treating the typewrighter as if it were a live bomb ...
Ohmygoodness Lord gracious Heavens, why did Lady Sybil have to die? She's so wholesome for helping Gwen pursue her dream, and much more I presume.
Because she wanted to leave the series. It's Julian Fellow's rule "No one leaves Downton. We'll (the writers) have to kill you."
Lady Sybil, Matthew and Violet(died on the second season of the film) dies is the most hurtful to watched.
I don't remember Violet dying in the 2nd season.
@@muriel8922 Not in the series, but in the film/movies.
I kinda wish they'd given Gwen a role as the girls scribe for their letters to build experience. Would have been fun :)
I was also imagining that Gwen could have been an scribe for the wounded officers in the house during the war.
My grandmother becamaea a nurse during this time period. She saved lives, She married late and had my mother.
I'm currently reading the Downton Abbey Season 1 script, and I literally just read the scene where Sybil takes Gwen to the interview.
Sybil was a saint.
and she goes on to become a famous actress,,love this show,,thank you,,
✨❣️SYBIL IS A TRUE WOMAN ❣️✨
I think Sybil really gets from her mother. The American side and so ❤️.
I wish we could all be like Sybil
You can hide a typewriter, but how did nobody hear her practicing?
GOD I love Ana and Mr. Bates so much
Can we please have a video on Lady Sybil and Cora's relationship? ❤️🤍
The beautiful irony of Gwens story is that if O'Brian hadn't stuck her big nose in Gwens business, Sybil wouldn't have found out about it and without Sybils help Gwen probably never leaves service.
And I'm sitting here typing this on a QWERTY keyboard . . . just like that typewriter.
Isn't that amazing? 🥰👍❤
I love me some Sybil ❤❤❤
House Maids....My god they worked. For so little pay.
Miss hughs at the end😂😂😂
we need more people like sybil in the world
When you find out Gwen’s (in real life) great great grandfather was a descendant of King Charles the 2nd. Like what kind of black mirror inception kind of thing is that…
So... how was Gwen going to practice her typing without anyone knowing?
Well in her own room at night. Anna was her roommate and wouldn't give her away
Exactly. Those typewriters made a lot of noise, waking the whole house up - especially in the dead of night.
11:14 is a look most fathers give when their teenage kids are up to something
Sybil is the most like Cora!
Why do they have to kill off Sybil's role so soon!! not enough conflicts or drama? Just love her.
Line and staff. One cannot exist without the other.
What does Bates say at 2:00? Amen?
Wow I've been living under a bush never knew she was in the series. I'm just now getting into GOT.
Le ayudo tanto que no volvió
Ye know nothin, john Snow. 🎉😊
I was shocked and distraught when Sybil died!
Get back please 😂😂😂
You would swear they found a bong
Sybil helps Gwen go to help John Snow in Westeros
It’s a typewriter but what is the big deal. Girls can dream.
They can but back then a job in service was considered a very good job with prospects and to be wanting to leave was considered mad especially if there was no guarantee of success.
They ate their thoughts and words later when Gwen returned
Not when you come from such a humble background. All dreams and ambitions were usually nipped in the bud.
He looks at it as if it were a WOMD!
Little known that Gwen's actress later appear in Game Of Thrones. Too bad Gwen doesn't appear in Downton Abbey 1-2 movie.
Day 33 asking for season 7 or 3rd movie luv the show
She was beautiful in the red dress. Otherwise too of course.
😊 💯
recut and redone,
I wish they found good replacements for Sybil and Matthew.I dont like Henry.Wish Mary chose Mr Blake.
Why don't you like Henry? I'm honestly curious because I quite like him but then again Mary and Matthew were best suited.
I did like the idea of Blake and Mary as well
Lady Mary could chew and spit out Mr Blake before breakfast
If I had a spaceship, I would christen it the "SS Sybil".
Day 32 asking for season 7 or a 3rd movie
Servants were abused...
Why is a typewriter wrong ? O Brian is weird
You know nothing, Mr. Carson.
She should have stayed with the show. Her career has gone totally downhill.
What a slavery like situation it was for all the servants 😏
Then you don't know what real slavery is which still goes on today.
It's a hard life for sure but slavery is unspeakable.
Not slavery at all. In Britain, Service was an extremely respectable and desired job among the poorly educated working-class. Those who managed to obtain a job in service were fortunate. Compared to practically all other low-education working-class jobs, such as farm, factory and construction work, etc. Service provided better pay, far easier, better and massively safer working conditions, excellent lifetime job security and far better opportunities for promotion and advancement with associated perks. Hence why the Butler says "there would plenty of young girls who'd be glad of a position in this house".
Although the work was menial, the hours were extremely long, and they had very little free time. It was an extremely stable and secure job for life, with great long term opportunities for promotion, which provided a good and guaranteed steady and stable income, along with comfortable living accommodations and food for free. This allowed them to continually save a good portion of their income towards a comfortable retirement. It was a job with virtually no chance of physical injury or death. It was a job that carried and gave higher respect, prestige, status and privilege in society than all other working-class jobs. It also often allowed them to remain local and close to where they were born and to their families.
Contrast that with factory, farm and construction work, etc. Those professions had extremely little job security, the people in them often had to continually search for work and income throughout their life. Both short and long periods of being unable to find actual work and income were common. They often had to source and pay for their own food and accommodations. It was very difficult for them to save money, and what they did save was for an emergency fund for when they were without work and income. Their work was massively more physically demanding and dangerous, and their risk of injury and death was extremely high. People often had to continually relocate to various parts of the country to find work far from their birthplace.
If you were thrown back and trapped in time in Victorian/Edwardian Britain and forced to choose a working-class profession, but you could choose any you wished. You would choose service purely because it was by far the most secure, comfortable, easiest, safest, best paying and prestigious of the bunch.
Pauvres riches ! que de problèmes ! à vous dégoûter d'être nantis. Et les larbins à problèmes aussi. la cerise sur le gâteau, le chef des larbins ridicule à l'extrème.
Gwen's new job was on Game of Thrones.
funny ;)
