Hi John, having never listened to Primal Scream that needle drop came as a surprise, smacks of a lost 90's classic for sure. Twenty years ago Let It Be Naked came out, unbelievable. Still never owned it myself but years ago I walked into one of my favourite local record stores. The Beatles were playing on the store system, sounded like Let It Be but different, no strings and some songs I didn't recognize. The shop owner told me it was a bootleg he had just got in the shop, and in a twist it was one he himself had put out as a young man living near Chicago! Somehow he had got hold of an early version of the album, pressed up a batch of copies and went around selling them out of the trunk of his car. Not sure if that was a tall tale or not but with the Naked album in mind I joked with him that he had been ahead of his time, he thought that was funny and I still always remember that anecdote when I see that album. Cheers!

Absolutely appreciated the Primal Scream mention. Had it, Screamadelica and XTRMNTR on the compact disc. But "Rocks"? As a DJ in Winnipeg, Canada, it was a -- WARNING -- "Guaranteed. Floor. Filler." 🤠
And then the Ardent recording? Come on, man. COME ON! Love it. Had not heard of it before your video, but I will be hearing it soon.
Another great concept here, John. Keep on keepin' on! 😁

Hey Craig. Check out the Primal Scream album. You’ll definitely like it, particularly if you know the original release. It’s certainly more soulful than Give Out… 👍👍

I think the other three Beatles just enjoyed winding Paul up. Didn’t they put back the release date for McCartney to make way for Let It Be? Talk about rubbing salt in the wound. Love it! 😀

Funny how when he played Winding Road live in 1990 it was Specter arrangement

Hi John, I’m with you on Kevin Rowland being a genius. I love everything he has done, including don’t stand me down. Great that he is still going and still putting out great music. Enjoy Leeds! Andy

Hey John! Thanks for turning me on to that Dexys track. Watched the 12 minute version with headphones. Quite interesting. In an alternate universe, that could’ve been a big hit. Especially during the MTV era. Oh well.
    Cheers, Jon

Hey Jon. How’s it going? Glad you enjoyed the Dexys tune. The whole style of it is a massive departure from Come On Eileen. I just like the way that Kev always keeps the music fresh and interesting. Cheers!

Good to see you yesterday. I think I've probably shrunk since last meet up ......
I've never heard any of these though my interest to at least make the effort is peaking. I saw a session at Maida vale about a decade ago of Primal Scream. Kate Moss walked past. Hardly recognised her...... Let it Be naked i dithered in buying and now it's ridiculous money. Dexys i recently found the 7" related to that album. I'm still recovering from Kevin Rowland in the ladies underwear i think i need therapy. Lets see who's the first to show what they found in Leeds........😊

I still haven't got a copy of Don't Stand Me Down. Maybe tomorrow at the fair. I still think the band's Soul Rebels stevedore look was best, then it's a toss up between the Too-Rye-Ay dungarees and the estate agent chic of Don't Stand Me Down.

I just like the way that Kev always treats whatever style he’s going for as a uniform for the band. So many groups just look like a bunch of random people playing together. Kev gave the band, and the records, a focus.

The one thing that Let it Be Naked has in its favour is the way it was clearly presented as a different take on the original album with different artwork and title, rather than the insidious process currently underway with the Gilles Martin remakes which are slowly replacing the originals. Rant over. Good topic John.

    • @6inchpianist
      @6inchpianist  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I totally agree, James. I understand that the music is being remixed so that it sounds good on phones and Bluetooth speakers but those versions shouldn’t replace the originals, the6 should sit along side them. Let It Be…Naked is actually better than I remember it. It hasn’t replaced the original version, which I think people were almost expecting prior to its release, but it’s interesting in the same way that the Anthogy’s were.

One of the odd things about it is that when McCartney re-recorded Long and Winding Road in the eighties, he did it with the Spector strings again. And on the 90s tour he got the keyboard player to do string synths on it. I think maybe his main beef wasn't the strings but the harps and the choirs .@@6inchpianist

@@jamesgriffithsmusic Perhaps it’s more that Phil Spectre wasn’t his choice. His relationship with the other three Beatles was at an all time low and didn’t they delay the release of McCartney to put out Let It Be? I imagine that these things being outside of his control were part of the the reason for him being unhappy with the album.

I agree with you. I think “Don’t Stand Me Down” is a masterpiece. The way the drums crash down on “Original Flicker” to the way he and Billy banter about leaky nethers on “What She’s Like” to the amazing “I Love You”. He reinvents himself in every LP and the piano playing by the late Vincent Crane is to die for. Love that record.

Hey! How’s it going? Yeah, I love the chat at the start of “This Is What She’s Like”. They talk about going “up Bearwood”, which is just a few miles from me. I heard the album several years after it was released but, whenever I heard it, I would always imagine the band in their sharp suits hanging out around Birmingham. Definitely a better look than the dungarees and fiddles. Cheers!

I was playing DON'T STAND ME DOWN last weekend.
A lot of music critics will tell you that it's Kevin's masterpiece, his finest work and certainly greater than the commercial TOO RYE AYE rubbish .
Its quite a soulful album and it has a from the heart feel to it.

I think there’s a tweaked version of ‘Too Rye Ay’ that came out a last year, but I think that’s just some production changes and some fiddle removal. ‘Too Rye Ay’ is his masterpiece imo, especially Side 2 (don’t tell Nick...he’s not a fan) 😂

You’re bang on, Harris. All of those first three albums are masterpieces. I’m seeing Nick tomorrow so I’ll be sure to serenade him with a tone deaf rendition of Come On Eileen.

I haven't heard either of the Primal Scream records just thought i'd say i don't think those albums fit the idea of rewriting history. They made first draft of recordings and decided not to release them a such and did more recording. Same thing has happened throughout history with infinite number of artists and bands. You could say Marvin Gaye's What's Going On was closer the idea with Marvin making the record and offering it to Motown. Then having it rejected in favor of remix before the release. Still on both occasion what counts is how the album was originally released and not how it was originally thought of or tried.

Hey Pasi. I get what you’re saying but where I was coming from is that all of these records were released in one form but were significantly changed by the artist when reissued. I suppose it’s almost like them getting a second bite of the cherry of telling the story. All good records though. Cheers. John
